Going to Istanbul

Hey guys, this summer i'm boarding semester at sea and traveling all over europe on a ship. One of the ports is Istanbul. Of course we're going to go see the architecture and other sights. But of course the origins of cymbals all lead back to istanbul. There must be some cymbal factories you can visit or some shops you can go to. If i leave Istanbul without a genuine turkish cymbal under my arm i'm going to be muy disappointed. Does anyone have any idea how to find a place to buy one? Is it even possible? Does anyone here have any experience? Any feedback would be appreciated.

The "head office" for the Istanbul Mehmet Co. is: Evren Oto Sanayi Sitesi 5. Blok No:8, Hosdere Yolu Esenyurt , Istanbul / Turkey, Phone: (+90) 212 672 1601 - 672 6522 That's what's printed on the Catalog I picked up at 2008 NAMM.

We have an apartment in Kusadasi on the south west coast of Turkey. Last time we were there I asked about prices in the local music shop and the differential between UK prices and local Turkish prices was minimal...certainly not emough for me to carry them back.

The factories may have some deals though. I'm sure someone here has been to buy cymbals in Istanbul.

You should post pictures when you get back.

It would be brilliant if you got some unknown turkish cymbals.

Good luck and hope you you connect with the Turkish factories you have in mind ahead of time because i've heard they will offer tours and cymbal sampling from stock if prepared for a guest.

Please post about your adventures and some pictures for sure Clubdrums.

Re: Going to Istanbul

Hey Clubdrums,

I have been to Turkey before a couple years ago to visit family there. I had in mind to go and buy some amazing Turkish Cymbals at an awesome price, but one of the music stores I went to had some really nice Istanbul cymbals at a ridiculously high price. My grandfather also wanted to buy me some K customs but they cost about 600 USD in Turkey. I wouldn't recommend buying a cymbal from there unless you find a factory that sells them at wholesale. My uncle ended up buying me a Darbuka(i think that's what it is called). Also, the economy in Turkey is not doing so well, which kind of signals an increase in the cost of any good.

Have fun though!
Be sure to try as much food as you can! I am a sucker for Turkish Cuisine.

Peace
