Rod Morgenstein

Just wanted to show some love for a great drummer and fellow southpaw! Great chops, great clinician and a master of the double bass shuffle (the blast beat of its day). I should get that first Steve Morse album again, I remember wearing out the cassette about a hundred years ago.

I am surprised there is not already a thread on him. He is a great drummer. I have his video. One of the best all around drummers out there. Great feel and dynamics. Very smooth drummer. Great article on him in DrumHead mag a few months ago also.

Re: Rod Morgenstein

I got turned on to him thru a friend who was his favorite drummer...

I actually bought that Winger Cd *yeah thats right Winger* just cause of him....
Some pretty cheesy glam rock but the drumming is pretty good....

Only thing is I just hate (in a good way) watching lefties....
Its hard to fiquere out what they are doing....

So I watch his dvd from the reflection of a mirror so it looks normal....Lol...

Funny I just replied to a post on the TAMA forum saying the same thing.

I had the pleasure of meeting him at NAMM years ago, very nice guy.

Rod is an amazing drummer - I first heard him with the Steve Morse Band (around the time of "The Introduction") and then with the Dixie Dregs and other side projects. He has been a tremendous inspiration on my own playing and has pushed me in directions that have perhaps developed my playing to another level. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a drum festival in Tampa one year - he was a super nice guy and really passionate about drumming. His clinic also ruled. I've seen him live with the Dregs a number of times over the years - and he is a master musician - dynamics, groove, power, speed, finesse, amazing!

If you haven't heard him - you must certainly check out his work with the Dixie Dregs (sometimes just "The Dregs" ;) For me, the song "Assembly line" is just a freakin' smoking groove. I love his use of ghost stokes in the main verse groove. I also loved his work with Jordan Rudess (now with Dream Theater) - it's an instrumental project called RPM with some of the sickest keyboard/drum fusion jams I've ever heard.

Great drummer, super nice guy, excellent clinician/teacher. I've been listening to Rod for years and have worked out his book Putting it all Together. I highly recommend it.

Rod's great all around. Amazing player in every situation, be it the Dregs or Winger. He and Van Romaine played an awesome drum duet at a Steve Morse Band/Dregs double concert. There were only 30 or so in the audience, but everyone played their hearts out all night long.

I've met him and seen him play a few times and he's always smiling and friendly.

I really wish the Dregs toured more often. Great band that doesn't get nearly enough recognition.

Rod is on the new Winger Live Dvd/cd being released friday 11-9. Yes it's Winger but Rod is great and there is a solo on it. Thats always good. And Reb Beach is a really good guitar player. Definatly worth checking out.

such an awesome drummer with Dixie Dregs. I wish he was turned up in the P.A. more when I saw them (dregs and Rod) with dream theater. It sounded very plain. What a bummer. Got to meet Steve Morse, though!

I had the pleasure of studying with Rod at Berklee for 3 years. He is a fantastic teacher and a great player. Also one of the nicest guys out there. Same goes for Dave Dicenso, I studied with Dave as well for those 3 years.

Studying with Dave was one of the best experiences I have had, same goes with studying with Rod. Dave really helped me with the mental aspects of drumming and not just what to practice, but how to practice. Every day i currently drum for close to 10 hours and their teachings still resonate with me. Dave left TTS back in 2002 I think. He was just in MD and is on the current DVD which is killing.

I first became aware of Rod when I saw the Steve Morse Band open for Rush in the mid 80s. I had never seen or heard him play before, but I was very impressed that night.

Rod Morgenstein is probably the most influential lefty drummer for me ever. I ran into this interview series recently, and it's really cool to see for someone who never (as an outsider) understood his shift from the Dixie Dregs, etc. fusion stuff to Winger ...

I saw a clinic he did at a Guitar Center in Baltimore a few years ago. Excellent drummer! Makes it look so easy.
