Steven Adler

Sorry if I missed it, but couldn't find a 'Steven Adler' thread!! I know he was only briefly in the 'stratosphere' of stardom, but the guy played on 'Appetite...', probably the greatest rock n' roll album of all time [imho!]
Does anyone know what hes doing now?? I know he had some major problems, and the last thing I remember hearing about was 'Adlers Addiction' [irony anyone??]
I felt he was the rocksolid foundation [with Duff] of GnRs world domination and a fine rock n' roll drummer with some kool fills [end of 'Paradise City' for instance] and deserves a little bit of credit!!

Re: Steven Adler

The last thing I saw, and I don't feel like doing research right now (hah) is that he is a Peace endorser and is in "Adlers Appetite"...another irony.

Great drummer back in the day, just riddled with problems like 70% of G'n'R

So all I need to get an endorsement is to almost end my days thru substance misuse??? Exciting proposition....oh yeah, and perform with a worldbeating band!!
So frustrating that guys with the world at their feet take advantage of every dubious opportunity that comes their way....Hope Steven's ok tho, I still think he was a good drummer in a great band!!

Cool, Jon!

Thanks for the link...It's good to see Steven looking and playing so well. Some good rock 'n roll there.

Steve's playing is made more impressive due to the fact he's had a stroke. His left side is riddled with problems, loss of feeling, partial paralysis ect.

Really? I didn't know that. I would love to get in contact with him then for the website.

I remember reading Rob that he couldn't even hold a stick at one stage, I think he had a series of strokes as opposed to just one; I saw a documentary clip where he was barely intelligible when he was talking, he blamed it on drug use at the time, would b great if you could get in touch with him BUT the myspace page is run by a friend and it says in the profile that Steven doesn't own a computer so I suppose you'd have to ask for a message to be passed on.

Thanks Jon. Yeah I'll look into it. At the most to even be able to put him on the links page as showing people that he is in fact a disabled drummer, which I'm sure most people don't know. It will be inspiring to see that he's still play despite everything.

In my opinion Steve did a great job on the GnR album he was in. I think he is a straight forward rock drummer, not too much hype or anything, just straight good ol rock n roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do you guys think?!??!

Drummers like Steven [Don Brewer etc] are the guys that inspire me, I can relate to their straightforward playing and I can imitate their stuff, makes me feel almost adequate!!

Re: Steven Adler

there's a great youtube clip of him on it, talking about having a couple of strokes, and the craziness that was g'n'r........the show was called hard copy.....
i think his playing was very cool on the " appetite" album....straight rock drumming that worked for the song....i played in a g'n'r tribute band back in the day, loved playing his stuff.....
actually check out the metal sludge website also....it has 3 killer interviews with him in their "interviews" section....

I saw GNR open up for Motley Crue here in Atlanta back in the 80's. Axle was infamoulsy arrested on stage (for supposedly punching a security gaurd I think). We all thought it was part of the show, but the band floundered and tried to make it though a Stones tune...Not good! Than Adler tried to play a "drum solo"...not good! He then flipped the bird to the crowd and walked off the stage. The next day we found out it wasn't staged. Pretty amusing.

Re: Steven Adler

Adler is a better drummer than people think, yes his stuff on AFD is as basic as basic can be - but he is a lot better than people give him credit for. Straight forward rock n roll drummer.

It is a shame what happened to him when he was fired from GN'R, he seems to have got back on his feet now thankfully.

Re: Steven Adler

I swa Adlers Appetite about 6 months or more ago. it bascially a GnR Tribute band playing only the stuff Stephen played on. It was a great show and he really wasnt expecting the reaction he got he kept stopping after every song and just ffreezing in awe at how EVERYONE in the place was Chanting Stephen. Got a Signed Stick form him too altho i didnt get to meet him he just handed them into the audience.

Great Gig and He Played everything great too..still has the kind of "slopy rock and roll swagger" to his drumming!!

I saw him on the cover of one of the drum magazines (I don't recall which one). He looks healthy and I believe he is involved in a new project. Sorry I can't recall which mgazine. Look around, I'm sure you can find it.

I can agree with all of you. Steven was an awesome drummer. Yes very straight forward and no frills. I used to play A.F.D. from start to finish. Had a blast learning it.

Re: Steven Adler

Does anyone know what kind of drum set he uses? I saw this ad that showed he used Sabian B8s but in another picture I saw him using Zildjian. So, if anyone knows, please respond.

I am going to have to disagree with most of you and say that Steven was never an "awesome" drummer, and he is far below average as far as pro's go.... and this was back when he was 100%. I have seen him play many times over the years. When Guns 'N' Roses replaced him with Matt Sorum there was a huge improvement in all of the songs. Sorum is 10x better than Steven ever was and there is no way Steven could have pulled off the drum tracks on the Use Your Illusion double cd. Matt nailed those songs and brought them to life.

Steven played for the song - not a show off - and He did it very well in (Appetite For Destruction and Lies) albums...I hope He's been kept well.

Re: Steven Adler

In my opinion Steven's raw feel seem more appropriate for the band than Sorum or any other drummer that Rose has given the GNR label too.

I believe you're referring to Chris Adler.

Re: Steven Adler

No, that is Chris Adler. Steve was the original drummer in Guns.......

Steve played a snare made by a mate of mine and said it was the best drum he ever played. I will feature my mate's drums at a later stage.

I did enjoy what Steve did back when I was a teen.

Too bad he screwed himself up so badly. If you've ever seen a more recent interview with him, he's clearly given himself some brain damage from so much substance abuse. It's a miracle he's even alive.

Great pictures! I will add some more.....in due respect to Steven Adler and his drumming.

Re: Steven Adler

Completely agree
Steve is often overlooked. Matt Sorum changed the sound. GNR was never as dirty sounding or a dangerous band. Steve just roars. Chatted this point up at local music shop when buying some sticks, got some funny looks from the staff when boosting Steve to them. Dirty is good especially when it fits with the others
