Saw a Vic Firth podcast of Dafnis performing at the Montreaux Jazz Fest a while back and well - long story short - it was incredible. The man has such so much energy and groove is unbelievable. Your right, if you don't know about this guy, you should. Any good albums with him on/of his that are really worth getting?

Ahhh yes. Prieto is astounding. I think I remember putting a thread about him somewhere...or maybe it was just a reply to someone. Anyway, his stuff with Arturo O'Farrill is a must have and I agree this is where it's really happening interms of Latin Jazz. Great stuff!

Here's an interesting video of Dafnis at CUNY. it is interesting how he talks about musical culture in Cuba and how it is intergrated into the experience of life.

Jay, good to see you again. I love Dafnis.

He is pushing the outer limits of modern latin jazz. You check out the upside down frying pan he's got rigged up to his kit?

A cowbell with a difference....

Re: Dafnis Prieto

I wish it were Jay; but it's only me resurrecting Jay's Dafnis thread, maybe hoping to bring Jay back. Jay where are you? We miss you man . :)

Re: Dafnis Prieto

He played in Modern Drummer Festival 2008.

He is a musician not only a drummer.

I prefer Brian Blade style but Dafnis is really good.

I have all his cds.

WOW! I just downloaded "About the Monks"....

This is awesome! I have read interviews and watched clips, but I haven't actually sat down and listened to this guy yet. Definitely an inspiration as well as one more monster who makes me want to just burn my drum kit...

Re: Dafnis Prieto

If you like "About the Monks" you'll love "Taking the Soul for a Walk."

Dafnis studied classical percussion and is self-taught on the drum set. I think his classical studies reflect his approach to drum set, as he sees the set as much about making sounds as creating rhythms. I've always enjoyed guys who could do that.

Re: Dafnis Prieto

I'm definitely buying everything he's on...

Yeah, definitely a very compositional thinking drummer. Reminds me of Kendrick Scott in his ability to grove hard while essentially playing melodically. Absolutely kills his toms, and I love that. Hard hitter for such a thin dude.

Re: Dafnis Prieto

Just got through the first half of "Taking the Soul for a Walk"

Cool

What an engaging songwriter. I'm definitely willing to say he is one of my favorite (best best best) drummer/bandleaders out there right now.

saw him play just last month in toronto and he was amazing, of course. i had a chance to talk with him after the gig and he is a really sweet and genuine guy. he was very appreciative of the mountains of praise i was lavishing upon him. he is blowing latin-jazz drumming apart...

Re: Dafnis Prieto

He is pretty ridiculous. I saw him last year. He did a clinic and a concert. The best is when he does the clave beat and then sings a drum solo. Link is Below

Re: Dafnis Prieto

Now there is a man who has internalized clave.
