Metal Bands, suggestions?

I've been wanting to learn metal drumming but I only know of one band: underoath. What other bands should I listen to? Sorry if this has already been talked about.

Re: Metal Bands, suggestions?

Oh there are soooo many. If you would like to check out some of the classic metal that influenced today's metal scene you should check out Metallica(old stuff), Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth(old stuff), Testament. If you are looking for some of the newer metal bands I would suggest Lamb of God, Unearth, Devildriver, Hatebreed, God Forbid, Killswitch Engage. There are so many genres of metal it is hard to narrow it down. You may also want to check out some progressive metal bands like Fates Warning or Dream Theater.

I don't listen to a whole lot of metal, but I've always loved Mastodon. That would probably be a good start.

Re: Metal Bands, suggestions?

Hi everybody. I'm new. I've been lurking here for quite awhile now, and thought I'd make my debut in a thread about something I actually know jack about.

Mapex589 had it right when he said there are many subgenres of metal out there. They're all very different, so I'm going to recommend some albums from different subgenres and you can check them out to see if you like any of it, and you can PM me for more albums in the subgenres you like. Sorry in advance if this post is long-winded, but I have trouble keeping my mouth shut about metal.

Disembowelment - Transcendence into the Peripheral: First off, don't let their name fool you. Their lyrics aren't vulgar or violent at all, and I have no idea why they chose this name for their band. Anyway, this is the only doom metal album I own, and it also happens to be my Favorite Metal Album of All Time. Being a doom metal album, the tempos are extremely slow (like 60 bpm) most of the time. The music, including the drums, is very simplistic, but quite beautiful at times, especially on the last two tracks. The drums sound great, though. The perfect raw, underproduced sound, IMO.

Taake - Hordalands Doedskvad: My second favorite metal album of all time, and it's a black metal album. All of the instruments are stellar on this album, and the songwriting in general is absolutely fantastic, although I have no clue as to what the lyrics are about because they're written in some old form of Norwegian. Drum-wise, there's quite bit of double bass and the occasional odd time signature. Overall it sounds quite complex, but I'm new to drumming, so I'm not sure if it really is as hard as it sounds.

Entombed - Left Hand Path: The quintessential old-school Swedish death metal album. Swedish death metal has very little double bass drumming in it. Most of the beats are punk-like and create a surprisingly groovy feel, and there may be some blast beats here and there. "Bitter Loss" is my personal favorite song on this one.

Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky: This is a more traditional black metal album. Very simple and straight forward drum-wise. This album, as a whole, is just fun to listen to. It sounds like Darkthrone aren't taking the whole "black metal" thing seriously (I could elaborate on that if you want) and are just having fun. And besides, there's a freakin' cowbell on a couple of the songs. Seriously.

Sorry again for the length, but I wanted to give you a good idea of the albums before you listened to them. Keep in mind that these albums are in more extreme subgenres of metal and all of them have harsh vocals that may take some getting used to. I also brought up more obscure bands that people don't seem to listen to much anymore. Just so you know they're out there. Or something.

What about Black Sabbath that's where heavy metal came from.Led-Zeppelin also,Zeppelin my favorite band but I think Black Sabbath is more heavy metal than Zeppelin.Pantera is another good-one,Metallica (early stuff).Metal has such a wide range it's hard to just pin-point a couple of bands.

Children of Bodom. Their melodic death metal! Their all their songs are like a long solo. They have a sweet vocialist and guitar player and an amazing keyboard player and not to mention Jaska.

Re: Metal Bands, suggestions?

don't know if these have already said, and i'm not gonna go read through all the names.

As I lay dying
between the buried and me
The Human abstract
August Burns Red
Killswitch engage (currently have a great album out titled As daylight dies)
Protest the Hero (not too hardcore, but excellent guitar and drums)

for now those are the ones you should check out, nothing obscure, not insanely hardcore either, all are really good for drumming... if they weren't i wouldn't like them.

Oh man, great choices right there.

THA and PTH all have really similar styles, which I truly enojy.

Plus Killswitch Engage is just absolutely amazing.

I would also recomend Kalmah who are a melodeath band from Finland.

As far as Underoath goes, they are more in the "post hardcore" realm of music along with stuff like Alexisonfire and Comeback Kid.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE Underoath, I just dont think the term "metal" describes their sound as well as other genres.

Thanks but I only heard of Underoath in the latest DRUM! mag. I will check out all those bands though.

I am very dissapointed. Underoath is not metal! Geez, it's experimental-hardcore, or what ever you want to call it, but it's not metal!
Here's my list of some of my favourite great metal drummers:

Joey Jordison (Slipknot)
Travis Smith (Trivium)
Chris Adler (Lamb Of God)
Vinnie Paul (Pantera, Damagplan, Rebel Meets Rebel, Hell Yeah)
Jason Bittner (Shadows Fall)
Morgan Rose (Sevendust)
Lars Ulrich (Metallica)
Bill Ward (Black Sabbath)
Dave Lombardo (Slayer)
John Dolmayan (System of a down) I know he's not metal, but Thrash is a good thing for metal :P
Mike Justian (Unearth)
Shannon Lucas (All that remains)

And the list goes on, if you want anymore, just private message me. I also have song and recod suggestions.

Also, Aaron Gellespie (excuse the spelling) the drummer from underoath is not that bad of a drummer :P

Vinnie Appice, especially the Dio albums..

Re: Metal Bands, suggestions?

Amon Amarth (pure death metal, and they sing about norse mythology :D)
Iron Maiden (probably mentioned, but I like nicko mcbrain (the drummer) he has more "swing" to his playing than other metal drummers)
Opeth (death or black metal, not too sure)
Behemoth (same as above ^^)
Rammstein (also prob mentioned, but the drummer is good, even tho sometimes he uses pretty simple beats)
That's all that i can think of for now, hope this helps :)

Re: Metal Bands, suggestions?

I would start off with
Metallicas- ....and Justice for All. Great album.
If you like that kind of sound, then I would look for more thrash metal. This genre includes Testament, Exodus, Slayer, Children of Bodom (kind of), Annihilator, etc.
If uou want something heavier, id look for a band called Death. They started Death Metal and the genre is named after them, so you cant go wrong. If you want something heavier than THIS, go look for bands like Morbid Angel and Malevolent Creation.

If you want some really, relaly sick guitar playing without cookie monster/ shrieking vocals, look up power and shred metal. Power metal bands include groups like Iron Maiden and shred groups include Racer X.

Re: Metal Bands, suggestions?

I would suggest that you definetley check out: Black Sabbath, Slayer, Venom, Death, Judas Preist, DIO, and Led Zeppelin. Sure, Led Zeppelin may not be metal but they should be listened to anyways because they are one of the greatest bands in the world with the greatest drummer in the world.

Re: Metal Bands, suggestions?

Metallica - Lars Ulrich
Iron Maiden - Nicko McBrain
Black Sabbath - Bill Ward
System of a Down - John Dolmayan (don't think he's metal, but still good)
Slayer - Dave Lombardo

they all have different styles, but you'll find your own

great quote I agree 100% some of Zeppelin stuff had a metalish tone or groove to them through like Achillies Last Stand,Immigrant Song, etc. they were not as heavy as Venom or Slayer but i'm sure they listened and were probably influenced by Zeppelin.

Re: Metal Bands, suggestions?

I don't know much about current metal groups, but I flipped around on the radio stations and heard Chimaira or something like that. Where would this group fit in? They had the usual snarling and growling vocals, but their guitar playing was more melodic than hard chords. I heard some "black metal" that was similar. I might look into it and pick up a cd. So far I got through Pantera and Shadows Fall without anything bad happening. I like Dream Theater but I don't think they are metal, just more like Rush or possibly better.

The Sword.

They're metallic for sure (stoner metal?) but the drumming is not metal. All done on a four pice w/ single kick. Like Sabbath on steroids.
