Songs with that "POW!!!!" moment

So I have a two year old. My in-laws bought him Frozen on blu-ray about two weeks ago.

We have now watched it about 83 times.

I actually like the movie. It's much better than Dora or Blue's Clues or whatever.

But in the song "Let it go" there is a part right before the climax of the song where everything stops and the bass does a awesome slide right before the rest of the band comes in full. It's a fine moment of musical POW!!!!

So I'm wondering what song's do you like that have that POW!!!! moment?

Another one of mine is Jeff Buckley, "Everybody Here Wants You" There is this moment towards the end of the song where the guitar hits this high note on an upbeat and it makes me want to shake my groove thing.

I'm sorry but I have to say this. I just cannot resist.

For those old enough and in the US, remember the Batman tv show with Adam West? All the tunes they used in that TV show had that "POW" in them. It even said so as they displayed the word "POW" on the screen very often.

This is just in good humor so no flaming please. :-)

Won't Get Fooled again has a classic pow moment.

Speaking of Jeff Buckley, Grace had a few wildly intense passages.

Live, Aussie band Midnight Oil were always good for pow moments - you'd think they were powering and they'd jump into another gear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bA3d6lX4bWI

A friend and I made a noise comedy piece that not only has pow! moments, but also bam!, slam!, boing, crash and tinkle :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hnTUg-t9_M

Grace is definitely in my top 10 albums of all time. Definitely some of my favorite musical moments on that one.

Never hear of Midnight Oil before but I love the triplets at 4:07 and the guitar riff at 10:06. Good Stuff!!!

And I think you have captured my feelings toward sales pitches lol

The first time I heard "Stand" by Devin Townsend.
"Astral Storm" by Modern Day Babylon.
An emotional one for "Wille Zum Untergang" by The Ocean.

While we're on Frozen, I really like the soundtrack for that movie. The oboe solo in the middle of "Do You Wanna Build a Snowman" is a killer, and the first four bars of the bridge of Let it Go are really awesome too (with the string phrase that gets played double time in the piano immediately following).

Holy cow I have been so worried that my two year old had broken me and I was the only one who liked it. thanks for the affirmation

It's my favorite Disney movie on account of it basically being a lesbian "coming out" story (with a little bit of pretense, sure). Of course, it's certainly not badly scored, animated, or written, either.

I have actually heard several people say that and I got to be honest, I don't see it lol. I guess the "Let it Go" scene is supposed to be her coming out scene but if you listen to the song's lyrics and put it in the context of the whole movie it seems to be a story more about using your gifts and talents more for the benefit of others. In "Let it Go" she talks about having no rules and doing what she wants but what she doesn't realize is that her kingdom is suffering from the winter that she is bringing on. But at the end she ends up using her powers responsibly to bring joy to her people. I don't know lol cartoons seem much deeper now than when we were young haha.

Not necessarily a single POW moment, but this is something I've been getting into recently that has a series of pow moments. The peak of the chorus is a great build and in general this whole tune has a really beautiful soaring quality. 3:08 is probably the absolute peak of the pow.

Band is Balkanopolis and this guy is apparently a multi instrumentalist genius specialising in modern interpretations of traditional Balkan Music.

In fact these guys have some beautiful orchestration. I encourage everyone to also check other stuff out too.

'Let Down' by Radiohead has a phenomenal moment before it goes into the final chorus from the bridge. In fact, the initial drum entry is a mini-moment because of the odd time of the guitar part. It jumps in unexpectedly.

It's still a clean sound, just massive. Usually bands would have layered the distortion on but it works without it. Still one of my favourite songs:

As a teenager, hearing "Sanitarium" for the first time. When James says, "Mirror stares back hard..." and then the guitar solo comes in.

I swear that song threw me around the room.

Fine, I guess I'll have to say it.

Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight", the classic tom fill that ushers in the middle chorus. At clubs, parties, in the car, and even in some restaurants, everyone pounds out (or at least air drums) that fill!

Hate to say it but I'll always think of this goddamned ad when I hear that tune (skip to 0.58 for the aforementioned fill).

Yup, it's brilliant. Also love the original fill Phil picked up from Chester Thompson and Ralph Humphrey on More Trouble Every Day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naFQ7KG_nHg

Learning some Bad Company tunes now - their "trademark" song "Bad Company" has a good POW moment after the intro... "That's why they call me!" POW POW Bad Company! ...

Angel of Death by Slayer. There's a POW moment in the beginning when Tom Araya hits the high pitch at the start of the song and there's another when the guitars stop and Dave Lombardo does his double bass + tom drum fill before the final chorus.

I shall add a little class to the discussion and say the final movement of the William Tell overture by Rosini. That trumpet blast will knock you off of your seat. When you look up you will see the Lone Ranger.

Yes, that would do it (pity Tom can't pull off the scream live these days but still awesome)!

Wings "Live & Let Die". When the tempo picks up, leading to "what does it matter ya, when you gotta job to do..." etc. Axl Rose couldn't capture that but nice of GNR to try.

ps. honorable mention to producer George Martin for his score.

I have always listened to "Stairway to Heaven" with the anticipation of Bonham's entrance .. maybe not POW, but that kit sounds soooo good coming in. Like a big fat groove hug!!!

I still remember exactly where I was at and exactly what I was doing the first time I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit. Rock radio really sucked the big one in those days. It was the infusion rock n' roll needed at exactly the right time. The part that goes "with the lights out, it's less dangerous..." was the POW moment for me, and Grohl's drumming was perfect.

I also agree on all the others. How about White Room right where Clapton tears into his solo?

The last half of Threshold of Transformation by Isis. It's dark, beautiful and atmospheric and it just builds and builds to a massive climax, and then...POW it's over, tension releases. It cuts of perfectly, and you won't see it coming.

Styx - Renegade Nice harmonic vocal part at the beginning, then POW! rock 'n roll....

Led Zeppelin - Fool in the Rain The honkey tonk piano part in the middle of the song, right after the rape whistle.

George Thorogood - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer When he goes to his local bar and the bar tender asks him what he wants. Great shift in attitude in that song. Love the change right there.

Re: Songs with that "POW!!!!" moment

I think a really good POW moment occurs in the ending track of Blue Smoke going into Do me a Favor by Stone Sour. The ending bass line in Blue Smoke just builds and builds with a ride pattern on top of it until it explodes into Do me a Favor. It makes me sit back in my seat whenever i listen to it.

A second for "In the Air Tonight",but my all time fave is the outro of "Won't Get Fooled Again".A short synthesizer solo, then Keiths manic drum fills, into the snare only fill/cymbal crash, and then the rest of the band comes in with Townsends huge power chord, and Roger Daltrys rock scream of "yeah !!!!".The greatest of any human being /front man on the planet.

If that isn't a POW moment, you must be taking a dirt nap.:)

Agreed.

Status Quo "In The Army Now" similar tom fill.

The Porcaro tom fill in 'When A Man Loves A Woman'

The snare hit when "Wrapped Around Your Finger" by The Police goes into double time.

More than a few of these on Dire Straits' "Love Over Gold". "Telegraph Road" and the title cut have some great, dynamic POW moments.

Yes yes. By far the best Chicago song. Inexplicable how Peter Cetera wimped out later in life. Thanks David Foster!!!

Also shout out to Styx The Best of Times. "..And I know when world just passed my by, baby I know..." Saw Dennis DeYoung last year and man if that song doesn't get me every time. Classic stuff.

Another one. The Stars That Play with Laughing Sam's Dice by Jimi.

After the drum fill at around 0.50 there's one of the more scarifying starts to a guitar solo you'll ever hear https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ck7kmTvA-5w. It's great cranked up.

Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, the POW moment is where the ...err ...the tubular bells kicks in :)

Also the drum intro by Bonzo in Stairway to Heaven...
