Yes! More great sounding Yamahas by yet another guy I've never heard of! I like this guy a lot!

I particularly like the snare. I'm off to his site to see what model!

Unfortunate last name of "Bland" from a guy who isn't "bland" at all!

He played with Prince for many years, Madonna, Dixie Chicks, Michael Jackson

and the best drummer on the planet:

Never heard of?? You what??

Hehe sorry Stu, but ever since our Dom discussion I'm going to have to act oh-so-shocked when you haven't heard of a great drummer ;)

Michael B laid down one of my favourite ever performances in Prince's Diamonds and Pearls. Download it now and check out the monstrously huge drum fill about 2/3 of the way through. I guarantee it'll bring a smile to your face.

Re: Michael Bland: Sounds here....
Oh I'm fully aware of Prince's work, just never knew who his drummers were (until John Blackwell Jr.) And yeah, I like the drumming on Diamond and Pearls!

I also like the Dixie Chick drumming, except they too have always had different drummers.

Not a very good effort with Dom vs. Michael Bland, Womble ;-) You can say "Dom" and most people know who you mean!

Just a correction: Michael Bland played the Dixie Chicks for a N.O.-benefit thing live - but he did not make any recordings with them - as far as I found out.

Michael Bland has got to be one of the best Drummers this side of the planet! He certainly was in my opinion, the best Drummer Prince has had for any of his bands. His technique and style is so signature it's crazy!

Re: Michael Bland: Sounds here....
if you look up Greazy Meal from Minneapolis, and dig around the web looking for live stuff from The Cabooze, you might get lucky and stumble across some REALLY good drumming by Mr. Bland. You'll also get introduced to Dave Annania (sp?), who was their regular drummer and, if he hasn't moved on to another gig, is currently touring with the Blue Man Group. He's actually one of the percussionists on their DVD.

I'm scouring through my Greazy Meal stuff right now trying to remember which tracks he's on...

I'll upload them somewhere and post links if I find them.

edit: just listened to the mp3 of To Be True, and it's pretty obvious that the singer is Julius from Greazy Meal. Pretty cool.

I think the 'symbol' album by Prince is a great drum sounding album. Actually so far it is my favorite prince album as well. I love the china sound in "The Max." I was going to contact Mr Bland and as him what set up he used on that great album. Listen to the song on itunes and you tell me. I've listened to every china on Zildjian's album and I think the 20 inch A custom sounds the closest.

Re: Michael Bland: Sounds here....
I also know Bland from Prince albums. ''The Max'' is great song with very energetic drumming.
I like Blackwell, but there is something special about Bland's timing and dynamics. When I heard Prince's ''3121'' first I thought ''Wow, I like slight change in Blackwells playing'', later I learned that it was actually Bland. You just can't confuse his timing with others.

I had the privilege to see him play with a bunch of great players in a small bar in Minneapolis. What an amazing player!

I guess most of them were from Princes band and one of them played with Johnny Lang.

They were fantastic and to see them in a small venue was just great!

In my opinion some of Michael Bland's best work can be found on the Prince album "The Gold Experience". Check out "Shhh" or "I Hate You"! And by the way, it's a great album!
