My First Vintage Restoration

5 Attachment(s)
This is my first project -
70's Premier
Started like this:
Attachment 60712
Attachment 60713

Wrap stripped:
Attachment 60714

And the Hardware clean up:
Attachment 60715
Attachment 60716

Only been working on it a few day. So pretty please. Would have liked to have kept the wrap but with it coming from a school- so there was a lot of names scratched into it!

This is my first restoration and I'm enjoying it!
What do you guys think?

what are your plans? you have some nice looking grain showing there, maybe some stain to bring it out if you don't wrap it?

I was thinking of a dark stain. Slightly darker than the First Tom!

that would look nice, and it will make the grain really stand out. just prep the shells really well first with sandpaper and follow the instructions on the stain. you may need a primer first, I remember I did.
take your time too, I had to rush mine, I did it in between gigs and had only a few days to finish it so it could be better up close.

Thanks,
I'll make sure I take my time. Want it too look as nice as possible as it'll probably be used as my main kit. :)

Nice! I've just done one exactly the same. Looks like the shells are half a premier baron, 24,14,16,18? I too had to change the wrap because it was beyond help!
Ended up re-wrapping in British racing green and I'm over the moon with the outcome.
I'll try to get some pics up

Looks like a fun project. Are you going to keep the concert toms, or add resonate heads?

14,15,16, 24 I believe
Going to keep the concert toms. With it being my first project don't trust myself to drill anything yet! haha

Maybe the reason Premier wrapped them, none of the outer ply wood is matched. Looks like 3 totally different woods. Unless you want a wild collage effect, a very very dark stain may be the only way to bring them together to look like one kit.

They are a quality shell well worth saving though. The 3 toms are probably a mahogany, not sure what mahogany they sourced back in the 70's, North American nowadays is basically extinct, African is the quality replacement, Honduran is a cheaper quickly grown version. the kick, could be maple but I think Premier used more Poplar.
