Easy stupid question on drum triggering

Can I use the drum sounds inside of ableton live/pro-tools instead of buying software like superior drummer/addictive drums?

Not an easy or stupid question IMO. I had an old bandmate (who built his own recording studio) asking me the same thing and I didn't know how to answer.
Are you talking about bypassing a module and/or laptop with Superior Drummer altogether and triggering directly from ProTools??
I didn't think it could be done but if any audio experts out there can answer this one I'd love to hear about it!

I believe you can, in the end it's just MIDI data. The samples in Abelton/PT are gonna be more basic than SD 2.0 and such.

You can use a MIDI keyboard and play the drums on it if you want. You could also insert a new MIDI track and click away with the mouse to insert MIDI notes.. it's real time consuming but there's Youtube videos on how to do it.

thanks for the replies.

todd: I know I will definitely at least need a trigger module. was just going to pick up one of those cheap alesis ones.

Hoping someone who knows for sure about this can chime in

Some other info I left out..
What I want is to trigger my acoustic kit. Just kick + snare. And I only need the most basic sounds, as I will be using this for electronic/house music, not jazz fusion. I would be perfectly happy with the sounds in ableton
