New Years Resolutions

I think I'm going to limit my purchasing of new drum gear. Over the last 2 or 3 years I have accumulated waaaayyyyy too much gear. At one point this year I think I had 8 kits, 50+ cymbals, 5 sets of stands, and a whole lot of other shells and hardware that I need to actually build.

I think this year, I am not going to buy a single drum. I already own a 7 piece Saturn, a 6 piece Reference Pure, a 6 piece Concept Birch and a 4 piece Concept Maple. I am going to sell some of my extra gear and hardware and I am going to focus on building the shells that I currently have. That means by the end of 2018 I will hopefully have built a full set of Beech shells (8 piece kit), a 5 piece set of Tama Rockstars that have been sitting around needing to be finished, and 5 or 6 snare drums. If I get all this done before the end of 2018, I will allow myself to purchase more gear if I deem it necessary. But, I don't see myself deeming it necessary. I think 6 kits, 15 snares, about 50+ cymbals and 4 sets of hardware should be enough to get me just everything I could ever want.

Of course I could say I want to play more, or learn more, but the excess of stuff in my basement is hampering me more than my inability to play a certain part on a song or learning a new style of music.

What are your New Years Resolutions for 2018?

Re: New Years Resolutions???

Music related: Play at least one gig a month.

Non-music related: Continue to weightlift 3 days a week so I can get the ladies.

Musically: To play out more than I did last year.

Personally: Continuing to lose weight and get in shape.

Find an instructor, define a path, stay on course.

Find a band to play with.

Those are great goals. Best of luck! :)

Network more with local musicians and expand the gigs I'm getting with my projects.

Also get in at least a half hour to an hour of practice a day - I recently learned (whilst learning to juggle) that it really doesn't take that much practice to nail things so long the practice is consistent

I would suggest following your fave drummers on Facebook, Twitter, etc. if you use those media outlets. You can find tips, lessons, give aways, schedules etc.

Keep taking lessons and putting in the time to 1) play with more precision, 2) learn new tricks, 3) Buy a set of drums that sound killer, look killer and stay in tune for more than 5 minutes!

Re: New Years Resolutions???

More gigs (I guess I will have to kick some butts in my band 2018, they are getting too comfy). And reduce the number of drums and drum equipment. My goal is to go down to two drumsets, three or four sets of cymbals and five snares max. Which means: One drumset will have to go, one or two cymbal sets and five snares. Stuff that I just didn't play that often lately, but to which I am emotionally attached - for whichever unlogical reason.

Lose at least twenty pounds and try to resolve some lingering spinal pain issues through yoga, diet, and exercise. Cut out some of the alcohol.

On the drums front, I will be trying my hand at some quiet trio-with-singer jazz. Continuing to work on the next CD.

Re: New Years Resolutions???

Not sure I actively set any resolutions, but maybe this year I whittle down all my activity to just ONE set of drums. Heck, whittle down the entire collection to just ONE set of drums - after all, if Charlie Watts can play all those Rolling Stones shows with ONE kit, I think I can learn from that - imagine the profit if I did that from the beginning!

So you can lay odds and place your bets, but thatís where Iím heading.

That and semi-curbing the social media.

My resolution, buy more gear!! I'd love to find a 24" 2002 or Giant Beat ride.

Unfortunately, I do not possess the economic resources to achieve that goal. :-(

Get composing again, do a new record, get booking a tour. Book more gigs for my own group locally, I've been lazy about that.

I'm looking to join a band before I graduate 8th grade (this year) and hopefully gain some experience in a band before I head into the big leagues of high school marching band and possibly even jazz band.

Re: New Years Resolutions???

Overcome GAS and learn to play what I have.

I don't have too much drum stuff (only two kits with their respective cymbal sets - no expensive stuff, either), but I also have guitars, basses, amps, and a ton of synths. Don't want to sell anything, just stop buying stuff and play what I have.

Also, finally learn to play guitar and bass.

I guess my ultimate goal is: use the money for lessons, not for more gear.

Re: New Years Resolutions???

This year was insane for equipment purchases. I need to tone it down for the future . I have one last kit being built for me currently (TRS Custom drums) and that will most likely be my last kit. This will bring me up to 4 acoustic kits and 1 e-kit and I am running out of room.
Snare drums I seem to be good for. I generally use 2 or 3 out of the 11 or so I own now.
Cymbal have always been my Kryptonite but now that I have purged and have gone completely back to Paiste only, I am good for cymbals now. I have cymbals for any conceivable gig I would be expected to play.

So back to resolutions
Continue to work on my Big Band chops and sight reading.
Learn to play Acoustic Guitar ( I own one that I have never played - long story)
Back to the Gym now that my day job is not as crazy as last year.

Last year's resolution was to learn to play brushes, which I did. Best drum decision I've ever made, as I find my timing has improved.
This years resolution is to improve my speed and keep things smooth.
It is a lot of painstaking work, but well worth it.

My exact goals as a fellow eithgh grader. I have a bit of a head start on the band part: my cousin is very skilled at guitar, and he and I are very close. We are about a month apart age wise. We grew up together, and we learned our instruments together, too, writhing songs and throwing ideas at each other left and right. We always had a goal to form a band together, hopefully with a bassist.
Also, one of my other resolutions is to expand my pocket, and make it more groovy and less stale!
And to improve tempo and accuracy, as always!
Any tips would be much appreciated! :)

Nice! I think I'm the only serious musician in my family as far as I know but I do have a some friends who are musicians as well. Different musical tastes than me, but I'll explore the high school music scene. Good luck on your resolutions!

My resolution is to buy lots of new drum stuff.

Then next year I'll make a resolution to sell it all.

Re: New Years Resolutions???

Fortunately for me I'm well ahead of 2 goals:
1. Reducing my gear to where I want it. When I started having trouble walking around in my rehearsal space, it motivated me to do something about it.
2. Going to NAMM. The guitar player I'm with is endorsed by Gretsch and I'm finally able to go.

As for the rest, I want to play more gigs out of town this year. The local stuff is great, but as I'm in a rockabilly duo, it's easy to book us as openers. I hope that logic applies to more shows out of town.
