Drum Machine (or SW) FOR play-along practice

OK, I'm OK with general tech
but am not real up on these beaties -- I still use a mechanical metronome for cryin out loud

anyway - can anyone recommend a drum machine that's decently well set-up for practice play along (ie I can enter complex rhythms and work through them following the computer)
so
-Realistic sounds are not needed, I'm not looking to e-drum (I suppose, in a way, having not-too-realistic sounds could even make it easier to hear)
-decently large per-song memory (ie I'd hope to have the ability to have a large number of bars)
-step-entry available
- runtime visual representation would be REALLY nice (roland used to have those event grids IIRC)
-easy user input

so basically I feel like I'm swimming upstream a bit - looks like a lot of the stuff is "performance" oriented and has a lot of overhead with that stuff...ditto with electronic music production SW (lots of options for I'll never use and don't want to wade through)

any thoughts would be appreciated
