Hello everybody, I recently recorded a lot of Metal Shell Snare Drums.
With the help of Students, fellow drummers and members of drummeforum.de, I recorded 33 Snares with metal shells from nearly all known brands and price ranges.

There will be three videos in the end. Here's the first one, it contains mostly vintage & classic Sonor & Ludwig Drums.

Sonor Champion D454
Ludwig Super Sensitive LM410
Ludwig Acrolite LM404
Ludwig Brass Edition LB400B
Vintage Free Floating Marching
Sonor D505 Phonic
Ludwig Supra pre Serial LM402
Ludwig Black Beauty LB417B
Ludwig Supraphonic LB552
Ludwig Supraphonic LM402
Sonor D528 Phonic
Sonor HDL 590

Welcome to Drummerworld, and great video! The snares all sound so sweet, not a bad one on the bunch. But a few really stand out above the rest... it's hard to beat an old brass Ludwig!

Got to love that HLD 590 :) :) :)

Did you record these without processing (EQ, etc)? The recording sounds pretty natural in a close mic context. If so - good on you. I like that a lot.

BTW, how was the kit mic'd? & was there any processing used on that?

Great work = very informative & entertaining.

Hi, the whole thing was miked with 4 microphones. The Signal you're hearing comes from two Oktava MK012 Overheads, that are placed behind the kit. The SM57 and BETA52 (in the kick) are just "supporting" a little bit. No EQ, just right-left panning in the OHs.

Nice - I applaud you for that. So refreshing to hear drums represented without enhancement. It means so much more to the listener, & something I'm a big fan of in the work we put out there too. Great job!!!!

Very cool collection of snares. I listened to the first and third one twice, the second three times. The two that sounded the best to my ears were the Tama Kenny Aronoff signature and the Yamaha Paul Leim signature. The Chad Smith signature sounded surprisingly good for a lower priced snare. Thanks for making the videos.

Again, really cool - these are fun to check out. This vid confirms how great 402s are IMO, and how I still can't get into Acrolites! The AK was really nice...
