Big plus 1 to Soulive. Also love Jamiroquai and their offspring Maroon 5.

Some years ago I saw John Cleary and his Guilty Men. Bought the Spin I'm In CD. Deep New Orleans funk. Also, there's Dumpstaphunk from there as well.

... but where is todays funk music? new Bands, players? .. or has it all morphed into Hip Hop?

....
No, I'd say it morphed into disco and lost a lot of its respectability.

Sharon Jones and the Dapkings are very solid to look into. Raphael Saddiq is one of my favorite neo-soul singers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeKaHBMKows. The Heavy aren't too bad either, they've got a grittier sound. And you can't forget about Cee-Lo Green's The Lady Killer.

Judging by the neo-soul movement that's making a more prominent name for itself with in recent years; funk should be making its way around not too long after. It's around, but you really got to go out of your way to find it.

+1 on Galactic, Lettuce/Adam Deitch.

Would Sharon King and the Daptones be considered as funk? :-D

Soulive/Alan Evans too.

I'll try looking at my stuff and dig funky stuff I haven't heard in a while :)

Nice thread, I'm listening to all the videos posted above right now :)

What about Lettuce, with Adam Deitch? They formed in the late 90's I believe.

And then there's Jamiroquai, which are more electronica/funk, but they're still really groovy. You should watch their live at Abbey Road videos

And then (a shameless plug) I'm playing in a Latin/funk band called Babalao Stereo Club. The songs on the site have the old drummer playing but we are just putting the finishing touches on our debut album!

Yes, great examples SHT and Galactic! Fuze and gang, killing band.. but isn't that also a good 10 years old?
Would you say Galactic is new funk or is it the 'old' New Orleans sound revived? Not sure.. they do work with hip hop guys too, right?

what about galactic? i know they've been around a long time, but they're still making albums. not everything they do is "funk" but some of is it for sure.

the roots come to mind as well. they're getting into hip hop a bit, but still have a strong funk influence.

and of course hip hop is heavily influenced by funk and may have evolved directly from it, like you said.

Where's the new stuff? All my funk references are the 'older references', older R&B roots, James Brown,Tower of Power, Soul Vaccination, Herbie's Headhunters etc etc.. the list is long..

... but where is todays funk music? new Bands, players? .. or has it all morphed into Hip Hop?
