Hello all. Im thinking of getting another snare (for those of you in london footes drum store offers interest free credit for a year on anything over £200..deal with the council!) and I have always loved that snare sound on that album. According to wikepedia Chad used a 14 x 5 black beauty. It does not say if it had classic or tube lugs?? Im not really sure what the difference is?? I was hoping someone might be able to confirm that wikipedia is indeed right and also what kind of lugs. Thanks again. BTW Currently have a 14 x 7 maple Orange County 10 ply no vents natural finish snare which absolutely rocks and i will never part with it....but I want more choice in the sounds I can get. Thanks again.

Classic or tube lugs probably wouldn't make a noticeable difference. What you do have to keep in mind is that (a) you can get close, but not identical to that sound without also knowing every detail about the EQ, compression, microphones, mic placement, and whatever else it was recorded with. And (b) most drummers use at least a few different snare drums on any given album. The snare is really the "voice" of a drummer, and it gets swapped out for a different song frequently.

Regardless though, the 14x5 Black Beauty is an amazing drum, and you really couldn't go wrong picking one up. You can never have too many snare drums.

Hi there..yeah i realise there are many other factors in getting the same sound... main one one you forgot was the room you record in...and it was also produced by Rik Rubin...i think. All makes a huge difference. Im not going to get that sound in some hell hole of a rehearsal room...but as you said its a great snare so cant really go wrong.
