"too Busy"

When I started playing in cover bands many years ago, I was terrified of doing fills. As many years and many gigs have passed I have picked up a few tricks and skills. Lately, I have had two guitarists comment that my play was too busy. Has this happened to anyone else?
What do they mean with 'too busy'? Is it, like mentioned by others, that you play too much fills? Or do you ghost note the snare every moment you can? or playing 16th notes on a closed hi-hat all the time (previous drummer of my band did that and sounded really weird)?

I'd definitely record a live show and listen back.

If there's a band leader, get their opinion too. If they're happy then there isn't a problem, is there? :D
