Shuffles - A minute to learn, a lifetime to master.

I've been playing them forever, and I'm coming to the conclusion that it will never be as smooth as I would like.

Even now that I know it....it's still a difficult beat to play convincingly. A lot of stuff has to integrate together beautifully like a Swiss watch.

So yea, 5.

It's hard because we play shuffles and the like less than straight stuff.

When I say I only practice swing and odd time these day, all kinds of swingy stuff is included and this is why.

Playing shuffles will help your straight playing. The other way around, not so much.

Why are shuffles so weird to play? They don't sound "off" or weird, but they sure feel strange to play, and I don't think I'm alone on that. It's like it feels "sloppy" or something as I go along.

Agreed. Swapping the hi hats/ride for the kick seems more natural for me. Don't know if this is still considered a shuffle, but the feel is there.
