DW Collectors series order duration

Hi everyone,

I have just ordered a DW snare (natural satin oil) and a 3 piece collectors series (broken glass finishply) through Percussion House in Cardiff, South Wales, UK. They have said it's a 4 month wait! Has anyone ordered DW drums to their specification and how long was the wait for them to be delievered. What was the overall experience like?

thanks in advance.

Could be worse, in 1992, it was 11 to 12 month wait!

I've toured the DW factory, and it's rather small.
Each shell is made one at a time, and every kit is made from scratch. So it is a rather long process to build a full drum set.

i tried to order a 14x14 sonor s classix floor tom in walnut roots from percussion house in cardiff. they wanted 400 for the FT, 120 to actually order it and i'd have to wait 9 weeks. screw that......

I ordered my set of Collector's in August 08, and they arrived December 30, so just shy of 4 months for me.

I guess the hardest part during the wait is wondering whether or not you've gone with the right finish. I remember stressing about that directly after ordering them and just before they arrived. But as soon as I pulled the 14x12 floor tom out of the box and saw it in the flesh I was blown away by the craftsmanship.

4 months is a safe margin for them to quote. I've ordered from DW twice now and it's tended to be on the order of about 6-8 weeks in my experience. Like DrumEatDrum said, DW is not a huge operation and they can get backed up - especially if they have to make a couple new shells or you've got an exotic outer ply, etc. Then in your case you've got the international shipping which can take some time. Seems relatively reasonable.

Post-NAMM I think the orders back up a bit as well. 4 months is pretty reasonable for a pro-level, custom ordered kit... 90-120 days is a fairly standard wait.

Khaine, that 9 week lead for Sonor is actually pretty good... Sonor's lead time (at least used to be) one of the longer ones out there. I remember a lot of orders taking 6-8 MONTHS as a pretty standard practice.

Thanks for the help everyone, know what you mean about stressing over the right finish and colour etc. I could not afford or justify and extra £500 to get the sea green finish and had to go with the cheaper finishply. Then I thought I would go with the broken glass green colour but last minute went to just broken glass. Think i've made the right decision. 4 months to go then, better start saving up then..!

The glass glitters are hard to go wrong with. The broken glass is great; I have the green glass and love it as well. Hope you enjoy your set!

I had a similar problem. I wanted to go with a lacquer finish but had to scale back to a satin oil. I think it might have actually been a better choice.

Owell, NEXT DW kit I get won't have a budget in mind. SSC, Vertical Exotic veneer, lacquer speciality... oh yeah.

Mine was a 3 month wait.

It will be worth it....when it arrives, it will be like you're 13 again! Unless you are 13...then I don't know what it will be like.

I ordered my DW Jazz Series kit in August it arrived in October. Then ordered two more toms for in in October arrived the first week of January. Both orders were about 8-10 weeks. I live in Canada, not quite Wales for shipping, but the same border delays.

The drums are amazing ,everything I expected and more. The DW package (DVD, key, polish cloth, extra hardware bits) that came with the kit is a nice touch. The only regret I have is I did not spend the extra $$ for the lacquer finish. I too went with finish ply.

Great experience all around.

Grats on your new kit.

I've done a number of custom orders. Three months was the quickest turn around, and a full month sooner than they estimated. Five was the longest. Each of them would have been worth the wait if they took twice as long. Consider that at some point, every drum they make passes under the eyes and ears of one man.

You just cannot rush perfection.

Me, outside Detroit it took just over 3 months. It seemed like an eternity. But we have them for ever so keep that in mind. You bought the best drums money can buy. Congradulations, you will love them!!! I still enjoy just looking at my drums!!

Had a call from Percussion House in Cardiff, South Wales, UK. Amazingly and after only 5 weeks my DW collectors series finishply (3 drums only, no snare) will be arriving on wednesday, March 3rd. That is super fast time and about 2 and a half months quicker than I was told they would arrive.

The snare drum which was ordered a month before is not ready as the natural satin oil finish takes longer to dry out or something?

Let you know what the kits like on wednesday. Now have to sell my Pearl Masters kit, luckily i've still got my Premier Signia snare drum for now...

Bad news i'm afraid. Just spoke to Percussion House in Cardiff, UK and they have recieved the kit but after checking it over they realised that the bass drum is the wrong size. Instead of a 22x18 kick drum they have hand made and shipped from California a 22 by 12 inch bass drum. Why would someone want such a small stupid bass drum with depth of 12 inches - why didnt they check - why did they get the order so wrong. Im gutted and have lost faith in DW. The bass drum will have to be shipped back and now I have to wait another 4 - 8 weeks? So the original wait time of 4 months is looking more likely now.

I am laughing and smiling and singing to myself...damn mexicans

Bummer dude, but here's some food for thought...

I'm taking my 22x18 kick in this afternoon for a deeepectomy. When I get it back tomorrow, it will be a 22x13.5. Some people just like the shorter kick drums.

That's normal. My first DW kit order took 16 weeks to complete. They have no pre-fabbed shells; they only make what has been ordered.

I emailed customer services @ DW yesterday and within a day they got back to me. They claim it was Percussion House in Cardiff that gave them the wrong dimensions for the bass drum and that they are now making the bass drum and it is top of their priority list. Really happy that they got back to me quickly with such a great response, faith restored. Be interesting to know now how long it takes them to make a finishply bass drum.

Thanks everyone
