Determining The Depth Of A Snare ?

How do you actually determine the depth of a snare drum? Is the depth measured from edge to edge (top to bottom) with no rims/hoops? Or is the depth measured from rim/hoop (top to bottom)? I have received some mixed information about this from people on ebay, when seeking to purchase snare drums.

It is from top to bottom of the shell.

The hoop height would not be the same depending on how tight the lugs are.

Including the hoops wouldn't make any sense... Tuning and hoop type make it too variable. It would be like measuring your height while you're wearing shoes and a hat.

You frequently find that people do not measure drums correctly on eBay and similar sites.
The proper way to measure depth is the distance between the bearing edges.

The shell.

Yep. Always ask how they measure it, especially when all the sizes seem 1" off or they put 1/2 inches.

Yep...the shell, bearing edge to bearing edge.

One way you can quickly measure WITHOUT taking the heads off is to measure the snare with rims on, and them measure how high each rim protrudes above the head, and subtract those numbers from the "rims on" measurement. BAM!
