hey guys,

wondering about you fellas with 12'' and 13'' rack toms; what floor tom sizes do you use??
i think a 12x6.5, 13x7, 15x11/12, and 16x12/13 would be cool, especially since a 14'' floor tom might be too close to the 13'' rack (but i could be wrong, so let me know about that too). what do y'all think??

Well, Omar Hakim used 12,13, and a 14 and 16 floor tom when he played with Sting and those sounded great. I like the 15" idea, but you will never find a store that actually stocks those heads. When I played 12 and 13 racks, I stuck with the 16 as my floor tom. If I wanted two floor toms, I added an 18.

On my 1965 vintage kit I have a 12" x 8" and 13" x 9" rack toms and a 16 x 15" floor tom.

On my new modular Ludwig Classic Maple drums, I'll have a 12" x 8", 13" x 9" rack toms and 14" x 14" and a 16" x 16" floor toms. I got a call Saturday that the 16" floor tom will be here this week and the 13" will be a few weeks down the line. I always enjoyed playing the 13" rack toms and properly placing their voice in the kit was never a problem. In a couple of months I'll be ordering a 10" x 7" rack tom. The 10, 13 and 16" combination always intrigued me. Unless you want very short spacing within your toms, it would probably be best going with a 16".
