I just assembled these in my garage today and finished transferring my 6th Century 'ABERNATHY' Family Crest from my 32" Slingerland bass drum to my Ludwig 26". Most of my gig's are on back lined drums so getting mine out of their cases and ready for some local clubbing here in Nashville TN on MY OWN KIT next weekend is going to be fun. Don't get me wrong, I love just going on stage and sitting down to a 'ready to go' drum set, no lugging gear except my stick bag and fav snare drum, but it's sweet to play my own gear every once in a while.

Some advice for heads on a Maple kit

I know it's been asked a hundred times but I just got a used Pearl Session Custom kit. It's my first real kit and it's Maple. I don't really have any drummer friends who can give me advice and I don't want to buy something that I'm not familiar with. So I want to know what kind of head would you select for this type of playing.

I play mostly rock, classic rock, some funk. I'm not a jazz guy.

I want a punchy bass drum that has that miced sound to it. And I want punchy toms that, again, have that miced sound.

I was thinking Superkick 1 + Regulator for the kick and Evans EC2 SST + EC Resonant for the toms.

What do you like? What heads work well for a maple kit?

Any advice is appreciated as I don't want to waste any money.

Thanks

I have my 12" tom kitted with a genera resonant head and a remo emperor coated for batter. It has a nice sound, but no openess at all, I know ambassadors are known for that, but i wanted to try an emperor. I have my floor tom woth coated ambassador bottom and coated emperor top, and it has a great openess...? Doesn't really add up to me. I dont want to try an ambassador, even though these are vintage drums and will probably sound great. Its just that with old ones on my old kit, it was way too bright and high pitched, the pitch on the emperor is perfect, just a very closed sound. Any tuning ideas? Putting a coated bottom head on surely wouldn't work would it? Thanks

obviously it's tough to spend 1500 dollars on 6 bells. but i have two questions

1. what are the closest things to the sound of these bells?
2. is a stand like that available to purchase anyone knows of?

Hey,

I'm doing some recordings of myself playing along to tracks through headphones in ye old drum shed. With me playing along with the tracks through headphones and recording it with a digital camera, when I listen back to it obviously i'm only able to listen to myself. Looking at fellow drummers who have posted their playing to tracks and and having the master audio track audible over their drums. I have no idea of how to edit and what software I need to use to get the track playing along with my recording and tight. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks

Hey guys, I'm looking into getting some new tom heads and I was looking at the Remo Coated Emperors. My kit is a travelling kit so there aren't any resonant heads (weird I know, but they actually don't sound half bad) but the main reason why I'm writing this is because I wanted to know how to control the sustain of the drums. I mainly wanted to know if there was any better kind of drum head that I could use to get less sustain out of the drum without sacrificing the warm sound or durability of the head. And also is there any way to tune the drums to keep a short sustain?

Hey all,

So - I've been drumming seriously for about 6 years now.. but a hindering factor to my playing is my right fulcrum. When I want to speed up my playing it is my right hand that has put up a road-block for me.

I am a left-handed drummer, but I play on a standard right-hand set-up & play in a regular right hand over left hand fashion.

There may be a problem with my joint as I believe the right thumb bends back slightly too far unlike my left thumb.

Anyway, is there anyway I can strengthen my fulcrum? And get that hand up to speed?!

Hello, I am 34 years old and just picked up a set of drums (gretsch) (sp). I played back in school for a bit but havent picked up a set of sticks in about 17 years until about two weeks ago. I played a buddys set and had a blast and want to start again. I have never had any lessons and dont know how to read music. I have always been able to play along with music pretty well though and can almost always pick up the drum beat to any music I am listing to. Surprisingly I can still play a decent beat. I really want to learn to play some rock music (little on the harder side). I read alot of the recommended books in the sticky, but it seems there are alot of different recommendations for the different types of music you want to play. With hard rock being my focus, what would be a good book/video to pick up? I also am picking up a double bass pedal as I really love the way they sound. Any pointers or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Back in June I ordered one of the new Rock Tour sets. Being that I'm taking my set out to gigs every week or two, these were perfect.

I wanted a finish that wasn't readily available in the US, and I was told it could be as long as December before I ever saw the thing. I've been using my Stage Custom, and I figured that would continue to tide me over until then, so I went ahead and waited for the finish I wanted. I ordered the 3-piece shell pack (22" 16" 12") plus a 12" matching wood snare, and added a 14" floor and 10" tom.

Christmas came early! The 10" tom is the only thing I'm still waiting on, and I should get that by November.

LOVE THEM. The drums are smaller than my Stage Customs, yet they actually sound fuller and have more of a low end.

These shots were taken by the store after I put the drums together and set everything up. Zildjian A Customs all around, except for the 18" Oriental China. The store actually had one of the matte black Rock Tours in stock, and the guys there couldn't believe that the textured ash finish actually cost less than the matte. The matte is certainly unique, but the textured ash looks sharp.

Really sharp.
