Hello dudes, I'm 15 and been playing drums a while now...Moved on to playing with my fingers, as you can get more speed with less effort. I've masterd most of the simple tecniques, however i was looking for a more advanced teqnique. I currently wached one of the Jojo mayor clinics and there is a buddy ritch trick on there called the 'secret wepon' or somthing, where Jojo uses a certain push pull tecnique.

I would love to start learning this but i do not know where to start can any one give me some advice!!!

Isnt Phred talking about the Gladstone technique? I think the one-handed roll is something done with the rim.
Anyway,Gordy Knudston shows you how it's done here http://www.paiste.com/artists/
It's the most clear instruction I've ever found or it and I got it from watching it.

Ónly if your wrists are really good, which they probably aren't. Forget secret weapons and learn to play from your wrist. The best way to do this is to learn the German position. That should keep you busy for several years. Good luck, DPS

Yeah. Finger control doesn't really work the same if you haven't gotten the wrist developed enough. Like me, I can't really do finger control with my left hand, and it's no coincidence that my left wrist isn't that developed.

I'd say you really don't need to concentrate on fingers until you get to like 180 BPM doing sixteenth notes. If you get there totally relaxed, then you can learn how to use your fingers and once you do that, you can actually play a little faster using your wrists. And THEN you should learn how to use just fingers, at speeds like around 200+.

Buddy Rich actually used absolutely no finger bouncing whatsoever. He was actually totally against it. He used all wrist. He said that in an interview and it was put into an article of Modern Drummer magazine a couple issues back or so. The article was called, "Get a Grip" I believe. Very good article. It describes all of the different types of grips people use, and there's some controversy about which is best in some cases.

Yeah I read that. Buddy is very..... opinionated. He did use some finger control though, I mean, that push pull thing he does isn't with all wrist is it????

it can't be! its probably physically impossible to play at that speed using just wrist! maybe buddy was an alien.

I think the most simple to answer to it is he is in fact inhuman haha. As far as I know he didn't use any kind of finger bouncing technique for anything he performed on drums. He was alllll wrist.

Buddy was just out of this world when it came to drums.

nope, Buddy DID use fingercontroll, why he sayed tha he doesn't? Because he never really told his secrets.. the same thing with that ''Buddy has never practiced'' - incorrect, sure he did, I read an article about Joe Morello where he says that Buddy had practice pads in his home.

I don't think Buddy Rich had anything to hide. I know very experienced and well-knowledged pros who tell me that he didn't use finger control either. If you watch his videos when he's playing fast singles and whatnot you'll see that the whole motion is being 100% dominated with his wrists.

Um when the stick moves and his wrist doesn't, in left hand traditional grip.. that's finger control.

I'm assuming from his direct quotes he used no finger control at all. Once you have strengthened your wrists to a point where all you have to do is push the stick back down with your wrist and let it naturally come back up to you, it can seem like the wrist isn't moving much at top speeds.

And I was talking about if you watch his matched grip position.

My mistake for any confusion.

NO.
As for the push-pull technique, Jojo Mayer learned that from watching Buddy Rich video (I was in cilnics with Jojo where he sayed that)
and as we see, push-pull technique involves quite much fingercontroll ;-)

Don't take your mouth too full. You took one clinic with a guy who who watched a Buddy Rich video. Come on, now, a little moderation...DPS

Come on, that just doesn't make any sense that Buddy had never used fingercontroll...

i would say that it isn't a good idea to use fingers for slow-medium speeds, wrist offers so much more control. for record beating speeds yes, but not for normal speeds.

There is one main authority on what Buddy did, and he is not available for comment. A second hand quote form a video study is just not enough to speak with authority on what Buddy did or did not do. So why bother? DPS

So why bother?
Eh, maybe you are right :D

No matter what we will decide, that won't change the way Buddy played :-)

Yea like I said, i'm going by what Buddy said in an interview. Does that mean 100% conclusively that if someone had asked him if he used ANY kind of finger control he would of said no? No, that would would be an ignorant thing to say.

In any case, we can all agree that Buddy was a force a very, very select few can reckon with.

Joe Morello saying Buddy Rich had practice pads in his house is logical
I hope Buddy didn't think people believed him when he said he never practiced and didn't have sticks or pads in his house
After he had Major heart surgery in 83 and stayed home for 7 weeks what did he do to get his technique back tap his fingers on his cocktail table
I don't know why it was so important to Buddy to make people think he was so different than the rest of the human race
One of the directors for the Tonight Show said in MD Buddy worked out for at least an hour before he played every show and he did the same thing before concerts everynight
One of his x bassplayers said this in MD also
They say he also practiced on the bus
He had a built in pad right out of his special seat

i think its impossible for anyone not to have finger control.. without it, that just means that buddy had really insane wrists that has a very wide range of motion that could do very intricate movements.

It's called the "buddy rich". Others call it the open/close.
Check out Derrick Pope and tim Waterson' s videos explaining the open/close

Someone mentioned Jo Jo Mayer's left hand technique
In JoJo's videos he rocks his left hand back and forth to get a fast rebound action
Drummers like Joe Morello Buddy Rich Art Verdi and Vinnie Colaiuta use their fingers more
JoJo has a unique way of working up a great speed
Awesome technique
