View Full Version : Sonor Ascent Drums?

Does anyone have any clear idea of how the Sonor Ascent Drums sound? Are they quality, or sort cheaply made, and just cause they have a cool finish they are charging more? The bass drum claws look a little cheap from the pictures.

I do like the sound of beech drums, but don't want to invest in a kit that is "beech", but really is just a ploy for selling a product, and is crappy made. I have a budget of about $3000, but it doesn't have to be that pricy. I like Sonor, but I am not committed to buy them, I just want the most bang for my buck, and I want a quality drum.

So, again, is anyone experienced in the Ascents?

Have you checked youtube? There may be some people who have drum covers or even better maybe a review of the set so you can hear how it sounds!

You should look into the Sonor Newports. They are a limited edition run, but within your price range, and they are German made.

I have a set of Ascents...and I have to say, they absolutely boom. I have a set of SQ2s as well, but the Ascents are more of the classic Sonor sound. I really like the Ascents, and vs. the Newports (which only come in specific shell sizes) you get more drum for the money. Yes, they are overseas made vs. Germany, but for what you get, its worth it. The Newports are faddish in the current sizes while the Ascents follow traditional sizes. The claws on the Ascents are the same that are found on my 7500 dollar kit. Quality wise, there is not one single reason to not consider the Ascents. Great hardware, excellent bearing edges, neat finishes (mine are Iridium diamond) and the Tunesafe lugs rule. I considered the Newports, but the sizes threw me.

+1 I have also seen and played the Ascents. They look and sound amazing. The kit I played only had a 20"x18" bass drum but still sounded nice, full, and plenty of low end. Sure they might be made in China but so are Tama Starclassic Bubingas.

I am going back to the music store and will again compare this kit to the Pro Lites and S Classix. FWIW I can get the Prolites about $2k cheaper here in Germany vs. America,
