Cozy Powell is a GREAT drummer! Most of all I like him in Rainbow, the song "Stargazer". And you?

One of the first drummers I emulated. He's a very solid rock drummer who went way too soon. Emerson, Lake and Powell, Rainbow, Cinderalla, Brian May. I spent a lot of time trying to get bass rolls to sound like his
Some days ago I downloaded some songs from BEDLAM 1st album - WONDERFUL! Not only Cozy, all the band!
I saw him play with Brian May, he was wonderful, so much power and the solo section when he played his famous 18/12 overture section brough the house down.

I first heard Cozy Powell with Jeff Beck for those two great albums in the early seventies. The guy was amazing. He toured with ELP replacing Carl Palmer and was also fantastic laying that stuff...quite a switch in music...sign of a great drummer.

Moment of silence... Let's remember one of the gratest drummers in the world! Today is the 8th aniversary of his tragic passing. Cozy RIP. All you've done is eternal!
If you want you can offer flowers to Cozy: http://findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Powell&GSfn=Cozy&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GRid=8063&
I've heard a lot of his stuff with bands such as Rainbow and Deep Purple and to be honest IMO he was the greatest rock drummer of all time! Not Bonham but Cozy all the way! I have more respect for him and a couple of others than any other drummer!

I use to be several years ago so hooked up on the Rainbow On Stage 1977 album. I was trying to copy each of his fills, they were so inspiring. He's the one that made get into double bass. I always took Ian Paice as my main reference but Cozy Powell had so many heavy fills and a style that was perfect for Rainbow (i only know his work with this band).
He had also a rocking sound that was raw just before getting into headaching 80's sound.
R.I.P, he was a true legend

Cozy Powell amassed a pretty impresive discography over the years and was definitely one of my faves. I first discovered him for myself when he was with Rainbow. I loved his work on the first Micheal Schenker Group album as well. I also had an album back in the 80s that he played on with a band called Phenomena. It was a sort of all-star/supergroup type thing, but now I can't recall who else was in the band.
Oh, yes, thanks for the videos Bernhard.

I loved his work on the first Micheal Schenker Group album as well.
Actually Cozy was on Schenker's 2nd MSG album, 1981 (Simon Phillips was on the 1st, 1980). Two of my favorites are off of "Rising" by Rainbow. "Stargazer", Cozy's drum intro while Blackmore runs his pick down the guitar neck and then "A Light In The Black". A fantastic one two punch ending.

"Rainbow on Stage" is one of the best live albums ever recorded! The drums on this album sound soooooo good!!
When Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple he needed an amazing drummer to take over from Ian Paice and he hit the jackpot when he hooked up with Cozy Powell [RIP]
Along with Ian Paice, Cozy has always been one of my major influences and I've always fantasised about having his awesome Ludwig kits and playing them like he did.
He absolutely revolutionised double bass drumming back in 1976 with Rainbow and did it with such energy & power.... and newer heavy metal drummin was born yet again.
Definitely a huge loss for the drumming world with his passing, but his music will live on forever!
Another true legend!

It is good to see Cozy Powell getting the recognition as an innovator that he so richly deserves. Like many around my age he was the first drumming superstar with whom we became familiar. Whether it was because of his appearances on Top of the Pops or on a great old Saturday morng show called Tiswas. I even remember him hosting a competition to find the best young drummer in the UK - who later appeared live on Tiswas playing with Cozy. Wonder what happened to him?
I was lucky enough to meet Cozy at a drum clinic in Manchester in the early 1980s. THis clinic featured Cozy, Jon Hiseman and a good friend of mine Paul Burgess - who played with 10CC and later Joan Armatrading and Jethro Tull. While Jon Hiseman was a little aloof Cozy Powell was humble, approachable and genuine. And he did a great clinic!! A true sad loss to the music world - but as long as we keep talking about him and giving him the credit he deserves then he will live on within the drumming community.

I loved the 1977 Rainbow Live LP. Cozy has such great sound and presence on that disc. It's too bad that they chose to cut out his drum solo from Still I'm Sad; maybe a future re-release of this album will correct that mistake. His work with the Jeff Beck Group was great, also.

Cozy Powell quite simply was one of the coolest drummers ever ! He was a major influence on me as a teenager. Although I loved Bonham and Paice He just had a great combination of technique, power and originality. He brought out the best in every line up he was apart of ,and there were many! He was like a drum mercenary. I had the pleasure of seeing him live with Rainbow as well as Michael Schenker Group. In the 80's I would buy any album he played on . He always had great drum sound. I love the way he played on Rainbow Live Onstage especially "Kill The King" and "Still I'm Sad " Great Double Bass work We Miss you Cozy!

Very underrated drummer that is always almost forgotten in discussions. I dig Cozy playing. He was very versatile even if he had a double bass kit. He could play many kind of genre, from latino to jazz to thunderous rock / metal. His shuffle was gripping very much too.

I loved his work with RAINBOW in particular...and later on MSG &

Through my work, I was able to meet him while he toured with BLACK SABBATH

but he was always classy and friendly with us.

I saw him with Rainbow in the mid-70s and he was impressive. I usually find drum solos pointless but his 1812 Overture solo was a a buzz.
But IMO Cozy's most imaginative playing was on Jeff Beck's orange album, as in Ice Cream Cakes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N74N-JmjBo8) and Sugar Cane. Plus some tasty clean drumming on Definitely Maybe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhrsDEnUlJM).

I looked this up because I was curious, but you can currently buy 162 albums he drummed on. Others aren't available anymore. Even with all the playing he did, he was primarily a studio musician. Plus 162+ says alot about what others thought of his drumming.

Listen to the song "Stargazer" that is Cozy's raw power.

Cozy was one of the most powerful drummers in rock history!!.
The intro for "Stargazer" makes me shiver!. He also knew how to be dynamic, just listen to his work with Jeff Beck.
His early 70's "Glam Rock" singles were kinda cool too, "Na Na Na" and the memorable "Dancing With The Devil" (I think I'll do a video playing with that song, such amazing tribal beats!).
His double bass patterns and powerful steady rock grooves are just outstanding,I really miss that kind of drummer nowadays!.
RIP cozy!.

Cozy and Phil Collins did some nice stuff on Robert Plants first solo project, "Pictures At Eleven."
One of the records I drummed when I was 18! Cozy toured England with Plant to promote that album that year (I think 84)
He was one of the greatest pros in the business, and those in the business who knew him, loved him. I know Graham Bonnet well, personally for about 25 years and he loved him and said him and Don Airey were his best bandmates, Ronnie Dio once told me he was the sweetest guy you could meet, and even Michael Schenker smiled broadly when I met him after a gig and mentioned Cozy to him. (Michael is not a big talker.) I miss him every time I hear those bass rolls following the snare snaps he did so well. His drums and his cymbals were B I G and his sound cut through and he SWUNG!
RIP Cozy!

Today is Cozy Powell's birthday. He would have been 64. Almost 14 years have past and I am still saddened by his loss. I honored him by" Listening to Still I'm Sad" from "Rainbow On Stage". Tremendous drum sound tremendous playing. I'm glad he has got some fans here.

Love his playing. "Rainbow Rising" is an incredible album, one of my top 10 of all time. Too bad Led Zeppelin couldn't have brought Cozy on and kept going.

Another astonishing performance from the great Cozy Powell :)
A song featured on the 1982 Jon Lord's Before I Forget album, the song's called Tender Babes, Cozy's intro makes you jump off your seat :) and an interesting groove which follows Jon Lord's keyboard's melody, one of my fav Cozy's little gem, turn up the volume and enjoy :)) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPR7tt4du0s
Long live Cozy.

Huge influence on me.
HUGE
Kill the King... hello. Double kick work, the rhythm matching Daisley's bass pattern. What a tune.
Lost in Hollywood.... another fav I've played a zillion times.
Great snare work. I still do his Hi Hat fills 30 years later. Eyes of the World... off of Down to Earth. He has this longish, very composed fill that ends with the HH chips... friggen Brills.
Loves no Friend.... are you kidding me? WHAT A TUNE!
Dude was a monster in every possible way. I loved the first fill in Lost in Hollywood.... the snare to floortom to snare to floortom single stroke stuff. He projected power under control. I have always loved the way he played. Never heard him before Rainbow, didn't follow him after Rainbow. That stuff was just right in my wheelhouse and helped set a trajectory that I'm still on today.
Love this guy.
Man. I gotta go put in Down to Earth. One of the records that changed me.

I used to be a really big Cozy Powell fan. I saw him a few times with Whitesnake, Black Sabbath and Brian May. Live he was great and solid. And a real showman too.
As I grew older and went back to my roots (jazz, blues), I started to find Cozy's drumming lacking groove. I love old school powerhouse drummer, mostly Tommy Aldrdige and Ian Paice. These two were always grooving no matter what. With years, I started to find Cozy's drumming a bit "stiff" for lack of better word.
My favourite drumming of his is on his solo album "Especially You". To me, he showed a side of his drumming that was not seen before, in the sense that it was much more subtle and fine. He was much groovier, adding almost an "R&B" touch to his style.
Regardless, Cozy was one of the greatest rock drummers. He had his own style and sound.

Yes, Cozy has his own appeal. He reminds me of a heavier, faster and cleaner version of Ginger Baker - stiffness with enough conviction, musicality and skill to sound cool :)

I've enjoyed listening to Cozy's playing on The Jeff Beck Group's Rough and Ready album since the mid 70's. Does anyone know what cymbals he was using at the time that album was recorded?

Neat interview I found while poking around the other day, sorry if its been posted elsewhere, but defiantly give it a read if you've got the time. He talks a lot about his younger days before he came to fame. Powell was one dedicated dude.

Thanks for this, not one I've seen before, a good find, and an interesting insight, I though the fixing the bass pedal story amusing!
