Well the batter head, and custom graphic, finally came in for my 1938 28" Leedy bass drum. I will put a trap kit together and let you hear how it sounds, with some old Zildjian hats, and cymbals. The bass sounds really good. :)

She's a beauty sticks. Some guys on other forums have found vintage marching snares with wooden hoops, and used them for toms. They look and sound great. You could also use some keller,or C & C /Gladstone shells. You have the beginings of a Levon Helm tribute kit there.Nice job Glen.:)Cheers

Well I just happen to have an antique rope marching snare in brass all refurbished. Do I make it the snare or the Tom?

I think it might sound quite interesting, but visually, & sonically in terms of versatility, I'd be looking for a traps kit partner snare of the period.

I think that you should find an old snare to authenticate the look of the trap kit.
Nice job on the bass drum.

Nice work on the Bass drum.
That snare looks very cool.

You just might switch to playing a 28" bass drum!.....but which finish to match it too??!!

I would just keep it a snare. Its to beautiful to mess with.I also agree with finding a period correct snare to use with the kit.A Ludwig standard or universal NOB either 6 or 8 lug,two piece brass shell.Maybe a Leedy Elite NOB or a Broadway modelDuring his time with Cream,Ginger Baker actually used a 41 Leedy Broadway 6.5x14 with his double bass Ludwigs, and only used a supra occasionally.

Those drums can be had for 2-300 US on ebay,or if you want to pay a little extra, check out some vintage drum shops, like Steve Maxwells.Cheers

There is a 1939 Leedy Broadway in the same original colour that my bass drum was in. It is at a store in the states, and they want too much money. He will only move $25.00 on it. What to do?

How about this one. Guy wants 450 for a 1924 Leedy Brass within driving distance.

On esthetics criteria alone, I prefer the 1924 Leedy by a mile, it has class :)

I sent him a message, with an offer. I will see what he says? I am just glad it is on kijiji, and not flee bay. :)

That 39 just has loads of class, and mojo. The duco finish is problematic though. Most older drums have paint chipping, and cracking.I would get better and cleared pics before buying it.The metal snare is an Elite model, heavy brass shell, and they are engraved, and either white nickel,or black nickel over brass,or gold plated. Those lugs were used in the 20's and 30's and are stamped metal, not cast, and with no lug inserts.Be careful thr're not stripped.

I just bought the 39 snare. The finish is coming off anyways. I also found a 13 x 9 1940 Leedy tom with tacked bottom head, and no lugs or hoops. I also bought that. I also found a 1937 Leedy 16 x 14 field snare. Looks like the same wood. It has the x lugs in the centre of the drum, and all the nickel hardware is badly patinad. Not sure how to spell that . Think it will make a cool floor tom, that can also be a snare. I think I have some work to do.

Very cool. You have your work cut out for you.The x lugs can be found,as well as the more "modern"beavertail lugs.I love the look of the old Leedy badges, just real classy .

That is going to be one hell of a vintage kit when its done Sticks, not to mention how great its going to sound.Fiberskin or Aquarian American vintage heads will fit right, and give you a fat and warm vintage sound. You might want to think about learning Sing,Sing,Sing.Cheers Glen:)

Have you seen a tom/snare like that? Just have to figure out how to mount it as a floor tom, without making it look too modern.

I don't have the link, but there are vids of Gene Krupa playing that live on his Slingerland Radio Kings.THAT is something to watch.

I don't think a set of legs would look out of period at all.Late 30's floor toms, most were using legs by then, and only a few had a cradle.like early RK's.

WOW............thats awesome.

My first kit was an old Slingerland and the bass drum head tensions were interdependent of each other.............weird, but it worked.

Just bought a 13" nickel hoop and 12 complete sets of Nickel Leedy lugs, screws, tension rods for that 13" tom. Just need to find 3 vintage floor tom mounts and legs for the 16". This could be addictive. :)
