I'm sure this has been asked many times before, but I'm looking for a good combo of skins. I hear Ec2s over g1s are good, but are there any other recomendations?

If there are any links you can provide to other topics on this matter, please share.

I have had good luck with Remo Vintage Emperors over Ambassadors (good classic sound), Pinstripe over Ambassadors (standard rock) and Aquarian Performance II over clear Remo Emperors ( a really fat low tone with decent sustain)
All of which un-muffled, except for the 12 inch tom on an old luddy kit that I'm borrowing untill my new one arrives.

Also I have heard the Ec2 G1 combo, it sounds good to my ears, and the Ec2 heads can supposedly be tuned in a wider range than regular 2 ply heads.

I've personally only tried ec2's once. Every kit likes something else but on my meridian maples, I like sustain and resonance. The ec2 have a very fast and bright attack. Very focused tone. Theirs a lot of internal muffling. I personally ended up putting the stock remo pinstripes back on. I'd normally suggest for tons to just go with a clear g2 or coated g2 for starters. If you want a very focused and fast Tom, try the ec2. I'd also say that drum size helps a bit here too. It sounded alright on my 12 and 16 Tom but my 10 sounded horrible. G1's are your standard resonator from Evans except for snares. Resonators are usually single ply but your welcome to experiment.

Personally I go for Aquarian.
Studio-X coated over Classic Clear on toms.
Hi-Energy or Coated Studio-X w/dot on snares
Super Kick II on bass

I'm very fond of the Vintage Emp\ clear Amb combo, although I'm looking forward to trying the new Aquarians (reviewed in this month's MD) next time around.

I like coated G2 over clear G1. The EC2 has way too much attack for my liking.

I'll chime in here, I have dabbled and spent lots of money over the years on heads in the studio and on the road, and I'm totally on board with Aquarian heads. First off the product is (IMO) better and the coating lasts twice as long as any other coated head, plus they are considerably cheaper. Last but not least the customer service is excellent to say the least. I have drum tech buddies that set up popular bands on tour and they are going the Aquarian route as well.
Not shooting down other companies, Remo has great heads Evans has great heads, just with my experience and the money I have spent, Aquarian heads have worked the best for me. That's all I'll buy now.
Look into Aquarian, save money and have heads that last longer.. Seems like a no brainer to me.
Right now I'm running Response 2 coated over Clear on the toms, super kick 2 on the bass and a still have the Eperor x on my snare,, Which I like.. Soon to change though

Aquarian has been a personal favorite for me since I started drumming, I enjoyed the sounds I got with Remo, but not as much.
The only one I loved more than Aquarian heads was a Remo Vintage A over an Ambassador snare side on my 13x6 Tama Metalworks.
Other than that, Performance IIs on the toms over thinner two ply heads and Super Kick I with their Regulator on the kick. On my other snare I used the High Energy snare head, and that sounded awesome, and took a beating for a long time.

These heads are a bit more expensive than the other top two brands, but their durability outlasts theirs.

I dunno where your getting you Aquarians at but you should shop around, most places sell them for at least a 1/3 less than the other 2 brands. Music 123 has an ebay store and store on amazon and seem to have competitive prices on just about anything and also offer free shipping in the USA.

The Aquarians are much cheaper than Remo's. Not just by a little I must say either. I like some Remo products as well, but I really think it comes down to the name being so popular, that's why you pay more.
Aquarian heads have a better price tag and as I said from my experience from drumming for 25 plus yrs they last the longest..
Save money and they last longer.....Huh!!!!

No matter where I get them, I always end up paying more. Whether its on line, In guitar center or in the only other music shop in town.
And in the other one, they charge 30 dollars for a 16 inch tom head :/

Here are the prices of 16inch heads.
Based on tuning as low as possible for rock, these are what I would consider.
I used Musician's Friend as the base example.

A Remo Pinstripe is 15.32
An Evans Hydraulic blue is 16.28
An Aquarian Perfomance II is 18.41

I have only played the Remo and the Aquarian out of those, but I can say that the Aquarian takes the cake, and is worth the extra couple dollars.

That is strange, I live in Canada, and I recently picked up 3 heads (coated response 2) Remo's coated emperor version, and all 3 cost me $42. If they were emperors they would have cost me around $60 plus.
Possibly different up North here but they are quite cheaper than the counter parts.

I think their prices may have gone up here, the first time I got them I went for the cheaper heads.

I agree, plus when you factor in a 16" classic clear on the reso side for $12 the savings is substantial and if you buy multi pacs when doing the whole kit its even cheaper, Ex: 22 super kick and ported regulator with a double kick pad for $62, Id only get 1 bass head for that price with remo or evans.

Unfortunately I can't find a pack of Aquarians that will outfit 8, 10, 12, 16 toms. Even buying the 8 separate. Which I will need to do when my new set arrives.

The resos are cheap 0.0

Okay, thank you. I'll definitly look into the Aquarians drum heads you guys mentioned if they last longer cuz my tom heads are rippled and dented from 1 year of playing with Evans "Onyx." I appreciate the help!
