Something big. Lol. Im not sure of the exact specs, but something Neil Peart-ish or Tim Alexander- ish. I love Tims sets that hes had over the years. The Tamas are amazing, and the Pork Pies were awesome too.

Go on the Paiste web site and you will see that they have brought back the full line of Giant Beat Cymbals. You should be able to order them from a Paiste dealer.

It would really just be an extension of My Kit (http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7734), since mapex sells an add-on for their M Birch series. In theory, if a friend came over (w/ a couple of cymbals) I could move the kit around and have 2 kits.

Sonor Designer shells, Sonor hardware (Giant step pedals) and meinl mb10 cymbals but im at school now so cant use the kit builder until I get home, I'll add sizes and stuff then.

04-03-2006, 07:52 PM
Sonor Designer shells in a black->dark purple->black fade, you can see the sizes on the pic. I would've had Sonor hardware with giant step pedals. Cymbals would be Meinl MB10, 14" hats, 20 and 18" china (one on each side of the kit), 16, 17, 17 and 18" crashes (evolving around the toms), 8, 10 and 12" splashes (under the crashes evolving around the toms) and a 22" ride. My dreamkit would also have some stacks and a few aux hats but the DW builder didnt have it.

Uhm, that pic was way to big, yeah yeah, the drum shells would be 14x6 snare, two 22x16 kicks, 8, 10, 12 and 13" tom toms, 16 and 18" floor toms and an 14" floor tom as an aux next to my snare.

If I had the money I would want a Yamaha Maple Custom in Sea Blue Fade in the following sizes: 10 and 12 inch hanging toms, 14 and 16 inch floor toms and a 22 by 18 inch bass drum, all finished off with a 14 by 6 1/2 steel snare

AND 14 inch hi-hats
4 crashes (2 dy, 2 wet)
2 splashes
a nice dry ride of some description
2 chinas (one huge one small)
some cool effects crash or something

(i don't know about cymbals because i've not played enough to make up my mind)

I got this idea a while back that I think would be really cool. Basically it would just abe a regular drumset, but all the toms would be replaced with snare drums of various sizes, allowing me to turn off and on snares as I wish. I could go all the way from an 8" to an old 16" marching snare. It would have a normal bass drum and cymbals, but just imagine all those different snare sounds!!! I could tune them to different intervals and it would be so cool!

So I guess that is my ultimate drumset... at least a vague idea.

Well

I'm suprised this set up has been missed so far.

but if i had the money, i'd experiment with terry bozzio's "big kit"

All those picolo toms etc would give me my debut into melodic drumming.

perhaps i could do some duets with chad whackerman once i got good ;);)

Well, I see for some, the "ultimate" drum kit doesn't necessarily mean everything and the kitchen sink.

A cool Bonham or Rich/Krupa kit may do it, or even a bop kit. (Bop kits look sweet for thier simplicity.)

As far as I am concerned: this is an ultimate drum kit:
http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=3699&stc=1&d=1140822187

I ordered *exactly* what I wanted as a dream kit.

Drums: Tempus carbon fiber in purple glitter with black chrome hardware
8x7,10x8,12x9,13x10,14x11,16x13 18x16 24x18 kick and 14x5.5 Fiberglass snare.

Rack: carbonlite carbon fiber

Pedals: Trick pro-v1 detonator dual pedals

Hihat/snare stand: Pearl P2000 series

Cymbals: 16/17/18 Istanbul AGOP
12" Bosphorus gold splash
16/24" Bosphorus china
20" bosphorus gold ride
14" Bosphorus versa hats

Additional: two 6" rocket toms

It's exactly what I wanted...pics mid-October.

Note: I'd likely be equally happy and far more broke if I had a set of Australian "Spirit" or "Brady" exotic wood drums.

OK, Now I will probably change my mind in like 6 months, but as of right now I think this would rock....

16" x 26" bass drum (no tom mounts)
10" x 38" bass drum (outside floor toms with mesh batter head and triggers. giant woofer for front head)
11" x 14" rack tom
16" x 16" floor tom
16" x 18" floor tom

5" x 14" maple snare (black on black)
6.5" x 14" brass snare
8" x 14" birtch snare

12" mesh head electronic pad (x3)

Probably the new stainless steel ludwig Bonham reissue or Terry Bozzio's DW setup or the DW timeless timber kit or Neal Peart setup or Mike Portnoy's setup or........

I think you get the picture since money is no object right.and of course I'd pick several cymbals from the "K constanople","K series","A series", and "A Customs" all Zildjian.

Sorry Paiste Guys.

I would get either a 6 piece Yamaha Maple Custom absolute with a dave weckl signature snare. Sizes of drums would be 18x22 bass, 8x10 rack tom, 9x12 rack tom, 14x14 floor, 16x16 floor. That, or Sonor designer shells in the same configuration.

If i were megarich i would have the ludwig bonham kit plus the paiste jeff ocletree kit with constantinople ride and dark energy crash & hi hat-signature china as well.

Realistically im aiming for a 6 piece yamaha absolute in black sparkle stardust or natural with mapex bronze snare or bill bruford snare, which is probably enough..

10 x 7.5"
12 x 8"
14 x 14"
16 x 16"

22 x 16"

Sonor Artist Series bronze snare (Premier steel 14 x 6.5" & PDP maple 14 x 5") will most likely end up with Mapex Black Panther Hammered Bronze in 14 x 6.5"

Sabian Cymbals: I already own all but the crashes and hi hats (what I currently have in brackets)...

18" HHXplosion Crash (16" AAX Studio Crash)

8" AAX Splash (8" Pro Sonix Splash)

14" AAX Mini China
12" AAX Mini China

16" china (bottom) and 15" crash (top) on a remote hi hat stand (a la Tomas Haake - smart idea!!)

Wuhan Chinas: 18" and 22" (Only have 18" atm)

Other: 6" Zil Bell and 6" Stagg cup chime.

Hardware:

Pearl DR503 ICON Rack
Yamaha cymbal holders
Tama Iron Cobra Hi Hat stand and Double Pedal (Flexiglide)
Tama throne (Premier)
Yamaha snare stand (Premier)

want to run Evans G2's on top and G1's on bottom, EMAD's on the kick drum and reverse centre power dot on the snare and hazy 300 on the snare side.

and Vater 5B wood tips

think that covers everything...?

I too would love to own the Ocheltree Bronze kit, though I'd settle for the snare!!

Ok here we go..........

DW Exotic, Olive Ash Burl , Candy black to regal blue fade (picture shows regal black burst) this would be a custom job. Collectors maple, all Built in Bottom.

Some notes:
Cymbals are all variants of Saludas ....different series, different sizes, etc, etc....

Look at the kit like this:
Main Kit: 6 piece, 2 up , 2 down
Jazz Kit: 4 piece
Short stacks: Well......instead of putting small toms up to the left, ala Neil Peart and others,...why not put them in a more reachable/playable position? They are short stacks so they'll sit low against the floor toms and you can still get your ride and other cymbals in tight without having to go too high.

the 10-13 combo and the 15-18 floor combo ....I figured that those sizes would give a wider tuning range than a 14-16.

Snares: 5x14 Collectors, 7x14 Edge .....any other questions, let me know....

Cymbals:

Hi-hats -
13" - AAX - Fusion Hats
14" - HH - Rock hats

Crashes:
16" - AAX - AAXtreme crash
18" - AAX - AAXtreme crash
18" - AAX - AAXtreme crash
19" - AAX - AAXtreme crash

Ride:
22" - HH - Mega Bell Ride

Effects:

20" - HHX - Chinese
12" - PAISTE - Flager Splash
9" - Signature - Max Splash (sabian)
7" - Signature - Max Splash (sabian)
14" - AA - Mini Chinese

Kind of a mix between a smalll portnoy kit and travis smith (trivium) with deeper tonality in the shells, hence bubinga.

The white marine pearl kit are my dream drums. I have ordered a 14x14" floor tom to turn it into a five piece. The inspiration for doing so is from adding the 14x14 from my fab four kit to my black oyster dubs. This I did out of boredom, but the more I play this set up, the more I like it.

Not wanting to come accross as smug, but I already have my dream kit, worked bloody hard for it it too!! the only thing I would change would be my BigDog double bass pedal for a DW or an Iron Cobra, but I'll sort that some time next year.

how is that playable in that setup? depending on where you put your legs, it seems either the hihat/snare would be way off left or the second bass would be unplayable... though they seem to be different sized basses, and i see a double pedal for the second.. hmm

You would play it the same way you would play a normal set. The bass drum to the right and between the floor toms is played by a remote bass drum pedal, seen to the right of the bass drum pedal on the normal bass drum.

Kamikazee89: Ludwigs hardware is really beefy now even their less expensive lines, and the speed king is still smooth and still squeeks alot.

Well I've been doing my research on ~$1000 drumkits, the next one i'm going to buy, so I don't know much about high-end drumkits.

Still, I'd probably get a Yamaha Absolute, don't know which wood...I can never decide between Maple and Birch because I play all sorts of music, so maybe Beech.

Or a high-end Sonor one as well...

And lots of cymbals...
Yeah...

I would buy a Premier Premier Series Maple Classic Drum Kit Triple the size of Terry Bozzio's Kit with all cymbals being Bosphorus. Or Maybe a Sonor SQ2 with Bosphorus Cymbals again triple the size of Bozzio's Kit. Another Idea would be buying a 5 piece kit from every series of every manufacturer and all cymbal lines available.

OK you said money's no object I'd like to get the new Ludwig Stainless steel shell kit but only 4-piece sizes through:

custom made 28"x18" Bass Drum
custom made 20"x18 Floor Tom
14" x 10" Tom-Tom
14" x 6.5" Titanium Dunnett Snare

24" K med ride
17" K thin crash
20" crash of doom
15" new-beats

My other kit would be Gretsch USA custom sizes:

20" x 16" Bass Drum
14" X 12 Floor-Tom
10" x 8" Tom-Tom
14" x 5.5 Snare

Same Cymbals except

20 K Light Ride
14" mastersound hi-hats

time to wake up now LOL

26x14 13x9 16x16 20x18 all African mahogany finished in White marine pearl with a cymbal mount on the bass drum, actually two, one for the a splash and one for a ride. The tom would be on a rail mount or on a snare stand. The snare would be a Ludwig Black Beauty. Cymbals would be Zildjian Armand or Bosphorus Traditional. For those that don't know this would be essentially a Gene Krupa kit. There would be cowbells and woodblocks too. Cymbals would include hi-hats, splash, 18thincrash, 18med-thincrash, 20 med-thin ride, and a 22" swish. Perhaps an alternate 20x14 bass drum or even remote pedal it like Stanton Moore.

Ultimate kit? That's easy:

Stewart Copeland's setup from his days with The Police, especially the Ghost in the Machine to Synchronicity tour:

Tama Drums (I think he used Imperial Stars from 1980-1985):
18x22 bass
16x16 floor
13x10 tom
12x9 tom
10x8 tom
14x5 snare
full set of Tama Octobans

And, of course, the best cymbals for rock: PAISTE signatures/2002s.

I know a lot of people love Bonham, and he's great, but I'd take Stewart Copeland any day over Bonham, Bruford, and all the rest. Copeland has the best hi-hat work of any modern rock drummer, and some seriously intense grooves--the kind of grooves that make you leap out of your chair. Cf. "One World," "Driven to Tears," "Bed's Too Big Without You," for starters.

With Ludwig's great Bonham retro kit, and Yamaha's Steve Gadd anniversary kit, where the heck is Tama's Stewart Copeland anniversary kit? He's the only drummer to have used Tama for 30 years or more (a la Gadd's 30+ years with Yamaha), so, come on Tama, make us an anniversary kit!!

I think a fun set to have would be like a 30s thing with all the fun little temple blocks, cowbells, splashy jingly cymbals, and more. Even like the guys that put gongs and tympani along with the sets too. Essentially a percussion section all to yourself.

16x16
snare i built or the Unix or Mike Portnoy sig..lol

I wouldn't need much to have the ultimate drumset.

Yamaha Birch Custom Absolute Nouveau in red sparkle lacquer

26x16
12x9 rack
15x13 floor
18x16 floor
14x8 snare

Not Yamaha, but how about this? It's MY dream kit....:)!!

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h257/KarlCrafton/RSNwKtConfig907.jpg

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h257/KarlCrafton/RedSparkleSnare.jpg

The differences from your sizes are that this kick is 20X26, the floors are (2) 14X16, and 16X18 and my rack tom is 9X13.

This red sparkle snare is 6.5X14, but here's the 8" in Black with custom long lugs to match the shells on my black kit.

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h257/KarlCrafton/814.jpg

I mostly use 6.5 Ludwig Black Beauties with both kits...one of these...

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h257/KarlCrafton/BlackBeauties.jpg

Or, this one...

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h257/KarlCrafton/HammeredChrome.jpg

If you did get the sizes you listed you would never regret it!.

I have an 18X26 as well, and it's a cool size.

12-15-18 is an AWESOME config, I have those sizes on a rehersal kit, and the tone seperation is GREAT.
A 13X15" FT is way better than a 14" drum, and it's still beefy enough on fills if you don't go to the 18. I love the 13X15 drum I have--it's one of my favorite drums.

Yamaha Nouveau drums are super awesome, and the red sparkle is really cool looking. (...if I got a Yamaha, that's what I would get too :) ).
Those lugs, with the aluminum die-cast hoops on those drums make them pretty hard to beat (my Ludwig's do...but that's just my oppinion!).

Good luck getting your kit!!

Now, if I could get ANYTHING, I'd get the sizes I have now, only with stainless steel shells, but the finish done in the Black Beauty plating, and chrome lugs.
THAT would be SICK!!!

Hey, I've played Ludwig for over 30 years..where's MY anniversary kit Ludwig?!?!?!?!?!

Thanks for the badass!!
The kick is 20X26.

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h257/KarlCrafton/RSAbove.jpg

I also have this same kit in Black with long lugs. This pic shows the kick length better.
Same size kick 20X26.

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h257/KarlCrafton/Overhead.jpg

I love this depth on kick drums.

24's on up sound great at 20". There's just something about this depth that gives a great balance between attack, tone & ooomph.

I've never had anything but great comments on these bass drums (from recording and live engineers)--even some great possitive comments from Simon Phillips when one of my bands opened for Toto this past July. He really dug it, and I dug that he dug it haha!!
This size kick is really cool (for me at least), and it sounds great played soft or loud.

I suppose I could hear the stereo if I turned it up loud enough, but I've always used headphones playing to cd's or records. But cd's tend to skip....

Thanks again!

I'd love a HighWood Drums 4 piece 13" hanging 16" floor with legs and a 24" BD

A solid steam bent Highwood snare. Maybe 14x6 Birch with their amazing clawless wood hoops. All of the kit in a nice wood finish.

4 HighWood Octobans

12x5 Yamaha Musashi Oak side snare.

Every time I go there I try to rationalize a purchase with thoughts like "well, I don't really need a car...".

Terry Bozzio's drum configuration, with....

Neil Peart's 30th anniversary finish!

That, and John Good has to let me tweak the final assembly myself.

The cymbals are already in the bag. I bought as many of the RADIA series as I could get my hands on back in 1999-2000, and I have added a few since then. A second set would be nice though. Kind of hard to replace if some terrible thing should happen.

I have a buddy who was helping clean up a old church just to make some extra cash on the side and he found a red glitter gretsch roundbadge exactly like this. He found one of these COVERED in dust. Hes a guitar player and he owns his own studio so he knows what he saw right in front of him in a church closet covered in 2 inches of dust. He started asking the pastor about them and they were bought new decades ago and played in the church until the drummer passed away so the drums sat in a closet for 40 years. He told the pastor if he ever wanted to get rid of the set to let him know and the pastor said "oh the youth will probably beat them and tear them up just take them." Needless to say thats all he records with now and it's the warmest set i've ever heard.

I don't know about "Ultimate" unless by definition you mean the last drum set that I will ever buy..... my wife thinks that it really ought to be the last!!! I just acquired a DW Classics set in broken glass. The configuration is 14X24 bass drum, 12 and 16 toms with a matching (broken glass) DW 'Edge' 5X14 snare . I was a bit apprehensive about the mahogany/poplar ply shells but was stunned as to the result. They occupy space with my 62' Rogers Holiday and my Yamaha Maple Custom Absolutes, and those kits are feeling terribly neglected these days. I wish I could post pics but the image manager says that the files are too big.

My ultimate drumset would be 2 different ones really.

1) A 4 piece Gretsch with a nice deep natural mahogany finish, wood hoops and weathered brass hardware. Add in a mix of Meinl Byzance Traditional and Dry series, Boshphorus Master series and Sabian HHX's. 13"x6.5" Steve Jordan signature snare, 11"x10" rack tom, 15"x13" floor tom and a 20"x18" bass.

2) SJC or Truth Hybrid (wood/acrylic/wood) kit. Black ripple wrap over wood with clear arylic center, die cast hoops. Mix of AAX X-plosion crashes, A Series Sweet ride, Meinl Byzance brilliant china and A Custom mastersounds. 14"x8" brass or maple snare, 13"x10" rack tom, 16"x16" and 18"x16" floor toms, 24"x14" or 26"x15" bass with a 16"x9" aux snare.

If i had those, i wouldn't have the patience for anything else.

Jack white fan much? whay my ex guitarist wanted me to get pretty much

i've always been setting drums low and flat, way before i even knew jack could play drums! always would have always gotten 2002 cymbals ;)

his drum sound is really incredible and the custom Ludwigs he had made are amazing.

The only part I'm really influenced/copying is the 16" snare, marching snare and using crashes as hi hats. I use shallow rack toms, or sometimes an secondary snare without chains. Much better tone imo

Basically, it's my kit...
http://i820.photobucket.com/albums/zz125/PunkSweeper/Instruments/IMG_0118.jpg
But with a rack, proper double bass, an extra meaty bass drum for grungy slow grooves, and a large gong drum to hold drinks and towels and stuff.

I could play on it during a solo too, I suppose...

My ultimate drum kit would be, my own drums, but instead of stands i would have semi naked women holding up my cymbals and snare drum.

And that each time i played my kit, there would be a different set of semi naked women holding up my cymbals.

A few seconds needed, to think about that thought.

Lovely.

Sorry, its a bit male shovernist,

but at the end of the day i am a bloke..

Anyone know of any good cymbal stands.

But still my KK's do a lovely job..

The larger of the two kits will be my main kit, whilst the second smaller one will be used for playing in cover bands and the like. A lot of pop/rock music requires a washier ride cymbal that is also crashable, hence the RUDE Ride/Crash as my ride cymbal on the smaller kit.

The larger kit has a relatively symmetrical setup, for working both left and right hand lead.

THIS elegant and classic 4 piece setup ...

I not only want the drums but the deal he got on them!

The kit is a Camco LA Calif set in natural wood in 22,16,13 with matching snare ... they sound amazing and are in excellent condition even after years of pro gigging.

They belong to my friend and 1st call drummer I work with a lot these days Dennis Falanga. He got the kit years ago, seems he was helping a guy clean out his house and came across the kit stacked in the attic under a pile of dust, long story short he ended up taking the drums in lieu of the $75.00 the guy was going to pay him for the job!

My Sonor 3007s are set up nearly identically as Dennis uses them at our rehersal space.

Here they are in action on our recent New Years eve gig on Beale street in Memphis.

I'm actually in discussion with a drum builder based in the USA about building an endorsement kit that really is my dream kit! Sizes are:

22x21 kick (diameter x depth)
16x17 kick
8x7 Tom
10x7 Tom
12x8 Tom
14x12 floor
16x14 floor
10" snare
14" snare

All drums (except maybe snares) will be hybrid acrylic maple acrylic maple. The maple will be veneered to birds eye or similar. All stained black with gold hardware. The acrylic will be slightly smoked (darker) and it'll all have gold hardware.

When it's built and In my grubby little hands I'll push some pictures!!!!

Cymbals I'm pretty much already there! I won't list the lot, but it's all Sabian. Included an HH raw bell dry ride 21", HHX evolution crashes, HH fusion 13" hats bottom with an AAXplosion 13" top hat. AAX and HH splashes, Vault Holy China, and, Bizzarely, Stagg Bells!

2x iron cobra double pedals (left foot of the 2nd is played by the right foot for the 16" kick)
And all rack toms on a pearl icon rack, also coated gold. That'll do!

One good thing about getting old, all that dreaming you did as a kid can come to fruition and you can put together your ultimate kit. So for now this kit aggregates all of my drum needs/desires. But I would make an exception for this beautiful kit. How much do you suppose this kit would go for? 5K? 6K? It might as well be made of unobtainium. lol.

BTW, $5K would be cheap for that IMHO.

Edit: Uh oh - Just noticed the hideous lug splay on the tom. WHY?????????

Hmmm...I'd get either a

Yamaha Recording Custom in Deep Blue
14x20
8x12
14x14

or

Gretsch USA Custom in Piano Black Gloss
14x18
8x12
14x14

or since this is my ultimate, both!

Well, obviously something of Andy's :)). Stave Purpleheart w/ S-Hoops, likely- not sure of bearing edges. 11x7, 13x8, 15x14, 20x15. With an Ovangkol stave 13x6.5 main snare & Padauk stave 13x5 side.

With HHX Evolutions: 14" hats, 10" splash, 14" china under 16" ozone, 18" crash, 18" china, custom 21" medium ride, 18" HHXplosion, 11" Zildjian FX Oriental Splash, 13" Meinl Byzance Dark hats, 8" Classics bell.

Saying all this makes me surprised at how much of it I've already accomplished at 17. Wow!

Well, that depends on a few different factors. I have the same issue with Bass's. One bass just does not do it for all situations. Recently I let my Geddy sig jazz bass go on a trade for some Renowns. I feel fine about the trade.

I've wanted a good jazz setup for awhile and I have that now with my 57 bop kit. Still I would like to have something more suited for loud classic rock. I'm looking at several options for my next set. If I had to narrow it down to a jack of all trades situation I could live with:

22" BD
12" RT
14", 16" FT
6x14 maple snare

Those are the sizes I would choose, but there are a lot of shells that could fill the bill.

Both Gretsch, and Ludwig would do a good job. I also like Tama, and Pearl. Each have their own personality, but to me, a classic old schoold full sounding kit is where I would ultimately end up going.

Gretsch or Ludwig? It's a coinflip for me on which kit I would choose. Hell, I'll just take one in each.

Cymbals? Since I'm coming back to playing drums from being gone for a few decades, I'm really digging the Sabian AA's.

Hardware to hold it all together?

I bought a Gibralter 4600 series hardware kit for my Bop kit, and like it. It is functional and appears that it will last awhile. For a more aggressive style I would choose a bit differntly, but I'm not of the opinion that I would need all super heavy stuff for everypart of the kit.

I find most medium weight stands are plenty strong for just about anything. Even the light stuff is built very well, and would have been Pro quality in years past.
