this thread is dedicated to the practice drumkits and drum rooms or woodsheds we use. its not meant for gig kits but as a way of looking at how we surround ourselves and set ourselves up so we can progress. see dom famularo's ideason his now famous wisdom woodshed.

so i will start:

Hahahaha. My favorite part of that post is how you put the animal puppet as #1!

Cool set man, I really like the look of that E kit. How do you like it? I think my parents are thinking about getting me that, especially afater I got double bass. They cant take it.

That room is awesome man. I think thats how my room is going to be in a few years; drum stuff laying all over the place, in every corner in the room.

Btw, I like the picture on Dave Weckyls book. He looks like an 80s hair metal rocker lol.

its nearly silent. the bass spurs ar on a carpet resting on the stone of the old fireplace so there is no bass through the floor boards.
the sounds and options from roland are awesome.
i love the fact that i can mix my cds with my playing and get great volume balance without having to blast my ears with accoustic drum levels.
also the module has a very versatile metronome which allows for all sorts of odd time signatures.
another advantage is being able to record myself playing a new idea very slowly and carefully, then speeding it up to see if it really does sound muscial at top speeds...then i can modify it or keep it, safe in the knowledge that when i can play it fast it will sound great.j

ps: thank goodness i live in the era where poodle rocking hairstyles are a thing of the hilarious past.

pps: animal is a must. he reminds me not to take myself too seriously...i love drumming for the wildness as well as the art.

Electronic drums instead of accoustic, and PC instead of Mac....

I'll pass.

;-)

When we move into my new house next weekend (A huge house even by US Standards in the country, detached, no neighbors!) I'll start to make one of the 9 rooms into a woodshed!

hehe yes! that's one thing I sometimes have done with my v-drums. Even a few times i would record one beat, and then overdub fills (involving toms, snare, and bass) on top of the same track in the module. Then i would use the faders and listen to each instrument on its own and write out the part for the whole set. And then learn it! Whew, its tricky stuff, but quite insane.

My little practice room, 10'x11' with my stuffs. I did my kick practice pad from some pieces of wood i had, so how to turn a boring cold sunday afternoon into something cool. This room is in my basement where was my oil heating system, i ripped it off and did some soundproofing. So this is my place.

NUTHA JASON

very nice. i like your kick practice pad.

the sound in that room must be very loud with all those hard walls. when you play the kit do you wear ear protection?

j

sly1965
03-02-2006, 02:55 PM
yes, i wear ear protection most of the time but the room is pretty dry. In the wall, i have safe'n'sound wool plus a Sonopan board and a resilient bar betwin the Sonopan and the plaster board.also i putted a 1/4" foam under the carpet. ceiling same as the walls but i will put a suspended ceiling instead of the plaster board. Cool place to hide when you're the only man in the house lolllll.

Ok... so I was thinking, some guys like having their drums in their room... others like to have them on a room or garage outside their house... others prfer to have their kit on a rehearsal room or studio of their band... wich is your preferred setup, either that you have or wish?

In my case, I am so lucky, ha, ha, ha... after YEARS of not being able to play at home, at my job, one of the important aspects for my "drafting" was my own, exclusive room for drums, right at the office... two doors from mine... Man... it is great I have 2 acoustic sets there ALL THE TIME... ha, ha, ha... can't complain.

I've got drums skattered all over town. I have my gig kit in cases at the house along with a beat up practice set with a few cymbals set up in a spare bedroom at the house. My good cymbals are set up at the practice studio along with a Pearl Export that belongs to my guitar player's son. It kind of sucks not being able to keep all my good gear in one place to practice on. The only time they all come together is when we gig. On another note, I once had a practice pad set up at my work. It was pretty awesome- downtown on the 3rd floor of my work there was a little room with two windows looking out at the city. I would go up there after work and lose myself for a couple of hours. Unfortunately, we had to knock down the wall and convert that space for extra warehousing. I miss those days.

For some 13 years now I've maintained a rehearsal room outside and away from the home completely. So when I go there I focus on what I need to do there. No household distractions. Also, some cats you might jam with one or two times and that's it. Don't particularly need everyone to know where I live. And then I need to be respectful of the wonderful woman in my life. And I need not force my drumming into her life such that it's disturbing her homelife. That would be a bit selfish on my part.

This is my (very basic) woodshed. It's in my bedroom so before i study, i usally grab my chair and sit in front of the pad with my sticks. first. (and play rudiments of course)
I got my guitar over there too, i usualy play it before i go to sleep.
I forgot to take my swiss knife away, but i love that thing. I've used it for so many things it's always near me.

I use both regular sticks as the aheads. (both 5A)
I practice my rudiments with the aheads as well because i use them for gigging so i'll have the feel of those sticks aswell.

In the process of building a new Woodshed, as this room is so small you could'nt swing a dead cat without hitting someone.

I only have an e-kit right now. I practice on acoustic sets out of the house at friends place or I rent space occasionally ($15/hour including the kit!). I normally run the e-kit into a guitarport, set to "No Amp" and play along with MP3s stored on the PC using the guitar port. It has looping built right in so I can loop pieces of tunes to get through them correctly, and can also play them at half speed for learning. I play this thing at all hours of the night through headphones.. great for practice.

The TV is for watching drum DVDs and for the kids Xbox. My beloved LP is also in the pics. I love her. That classical guitar is a little $100 cheap plywood thing that is my "beater", that amazingly holds it's tune for weeks on end and sounds pretty good.

here is a DW practice set.

Sometimes I put up the 12" snare from my Yamaha Hip Gig Jr.

I use rutes on the cymbals and a stick in the left hand so I can hear the pads and the cymbals somewhat balanced but I'm going to get the HQ cymbal silencers so I can use regular sticks.

Those are Matador bongos behind the music stand.

When I see photos of drumsets in corners of house or apartment rooms I think "Wow, that must really be loud".

What a fun pad! We have many of the same percussion instruments: congas, bongos and tablas. Collecting and learning new stuff is something you can do your entire life.

How long have you been playing tablas? I've been at it for about six years and so far I'm leanred only a few talas, mainly chatasri jati (four beats) variations. I have some tabla playing at www.terrasonus.com on a song called Third Chakra.

I have a funny way of practising. Sometimes when I either can't go down to my practising shed because my brother is practising guitar or because my neighbours are feeling particularly inhospitable (long words lol) I go to Anderton's music store in Guildford and try out the electric drums, because they are so lax they'll let you spend an hour there if you really want, and they have the roland v-drums, which are great. Outdated pic of the store:

http://www.andertons.co.uk/images/store_04/drums_1.jpg

I also went all the way to southampton today, because my parents had a day off work and wanted to go shopping. Southampton, by the way, sounds like far but they have the best shops lol! I went to Sound Control and spent a while on the huge v-drum kit. This one:

http://www.andertons.co.uk/acatalog/TD20PBK.jpg

Eventually the staff at Anderton's will get to know me as the 'funny little feller who comes in here and spends 'alf and hour on the ol' rolands.'

Ok... so I was thinking, some guys like having their drums in their room... others like to have them on a room or garage outside their house... others prfer to have their kit on a rehearsal room or studio of their band... wich is your preferred setup, either that you have or wish?

In my case, I am so lucky, ha, ha, ha... after YEARS of not being able to play at home, at my job, one of the important aspects for my "drafting" was my own, exclusive room for drums, right at the office... two doors from mine... Man... it is great I have 2 acoustic sets there ALL THE TIME... ha, ha, ha... can't complain.

I am fortunate in that I have a set here at my house, in my practice room. (I cut my garage in half, insulated it, fixed it up and gave myself a 13X16 practice room) I also have a 6 piece ddrum set at church, my guitarist has a 5 piece slingerland set at his house and my other guitarist has a 5 piece tama set at his house. So I'm covered wherever there is practice.

Nice and simple.
For when I can't use my drums for practice (or if I dont want to) my computer desk doubles as my 'practice area'.
I put my copy of Stick Control on the computer (otherwise it would be a pain reading the book on the desk) and for the metronome i use the good ol free online metronome.

Once I get a double pedal I'll be making my own kick practice pad and sticking it under the desk.
So even while browsing the net (or even playing video games) I can work on my double bass.

I have a shed in my garden, currently used by me and my brother for music practice - my brother is really into guitars. We are about to have it soundproofed heavily and linked up with electricity, and this is supposedly what we will do with it when it is finished. I've also put what I hope my drum kit will look like by then :D

It's a Roland TD-3 V-drum. I have bought this marvellous toy last year. Before that, i have played almost 10 years on a practice pad! I also own an old Ludwig 1965 kit but i have not played on it since i live in an appartment... Almost 10 yers without hearing a drum sound. I know that those electronic drums are a little ''dry'' to play but it's better that than nothing.

Thanks for looking.

All drummers should teach themselves double bass - even if you don't use it in your band. If you play right handed - teach yourself to play left handed. If you write progressions - flip them and write the reverse progression. Do what ever you do with your left hand that you do with your right. That goes for your feet too. Practice rolls on a pad when ever you have spare time.

You need some mirrors in front and to the side of you.

Thanks, I designed and built the house 7 years ago.

It's sloped on the other side also and the entire area is pretty big so the sound reflects down on the opposite side of the loft into the living room I would guess. I resized some more pics show better. Most of these pics are older and don't have the drums in them though.

It's probably not the best recording area but it's fun to play up their. It's like a stage LOL :-)

I dig the Billy Gladstone pad, I still have mine from forth grade. I am now 39 years old you do the math! I still use it, it's still a great practise pad.

How do you tune that thing Do you add trash or take the trash out ?

Just had the basement finished, and got my music room done up. Double walls, insulation, all that great stuff.

I can play full kit, no mutes, at night, with family sleeping... and they don't wake up. My wife said it is quieter with me doing this than when I had my e-kit setup in the room down the hall from the master bedroom, with all the doors shut. So I'm happy.

People can still hear the drums in the house, but they are very quiet.

Just redid my room to be more drum-centric. I have a SONOR FORCE 3003 5-Piece (only use 4 pieces), and SABIAN AAX Cymbals.

In addition to a very noisy Vic Firth Practice Pad, I also use these things, the bane of my world... but very useful when parents are getting a headache.
http://photos-d.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v241/249/5/767318254/n767318254_878467_9762.jpg

And I created this little drum station out of unused shelving and use it for a practice pad stand and music shelf.

I keep the floor area clear and my drums pointed inward to facilitate practice. This is in a section of a basement with cement walls on two sides and lots of house on the other, so I haven't had a complaint from neighbors in the six years I've lived here.

Heaven!!

That is an absolutely beautiful room! It looks like a very comfortable museum of sorts. What are the two large, dark, tapered, cylindrical wood drums against the wall on the right side?

Thanks for the comments. Alas, that room is no more as I have moved. I have another room of comparable size with the same stuff in it.

The two large drums are bass ashikos, 13 and 14 inches. They're bolt tuned, in contrast to the traditional rope tuning. The ashikos are forefathers of the congas - when the Spanish brought slaves to Cuba, the slaves sought to re-create their traditional drums, including the ashiko. The closest thing they could find were rum barrels, like wine barrels but smaller. They put heads on those and thus the conga drum was born.

This is the front of the house the loft is located top left of the house.

This is the other end of the loft

This shows how the other roof line comes down on the inside. I don't know how much the beams reflect the sound if the do at all.

What a cool room. I could spend hours in there. It kind of looks like your drums are hanging out together in a group!

The African rope tuned congas are some of the most beautiful drums I have ever seen. How do they tune up?

WOW! That is cool, making your own room. Those cinderblocks should really help stop sound - are you going to fill them with cement? That would help stop sound.

I was thinking about doing that when I get my own place, instead of renting an additional practise room (if I can find any!)

Here's my little home practice kit, it's a little Pearl Rhythm Traveler Gig with Roland Mesh heads. I've also got a pair of plastic hihats (not seen in the picture). I'm hoping to outfit it with triggers, V-cymbals and either a module or a PC MIDI interface, but for now it only makes a lot of muffled thuds :-)

Just decided to put the hi-hat pad right in front of me after watching this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qFmKKa_LWY&feature=channel) last night. Its such an ergonomic set-up, and makes it easier for me to play open-handed and work on my (weaker) left hand.

After putting the Sonor bass beater in the DW 5000 pedal, it hits much lighter and causes less noise. Also I put some shirts I've outgrown over the snare and bass pads to protect them and create even less noise.

This thread is great, i dont have any pics but i thought youd all appreciate this. My first band when i was in high school turned my best friends room into the band room and moved his bed and everything out. He slept on a couch from about 10th grade to his senior year, now thats dedicated!!

My practice space (a room within a room in my garage), the amps and microphone are because the room is also used for my band. The practice room was built a year ago on a small budget, reject carpet tiles bought online for 20p each, that sort of thing. I am very happy with the room, the size, the look, the sound and had no complaints from the neighbours!

Joe

PS. We did actually fork out for acoustic foam and sound board plaster board along with the other budget methods. Works a treat!

Hey all, new here and new to drumming in general. Thought I'd show what I'm working with. I managed to set up a nice little practice nook in the apartment I share with my girlfriend.

Here is my little dedicated space. It is fairly sound resistant. Floors walls and ceiling done, 2X6 packed with Roxul, 1 inch of blue styrofoam, drywall both sides and a layer of carpet. Door is about 10 inches thick and seals well.

I do a lot of my wood shedding in my home studio on my actual recording and touring kit. I feel it helps me to get around the kit better when I practice on my big kit. You just start practicing things on the entire kit and using all the voices you have. Then you can apply them to different styles of music. Using rudiments on the entire kit not just the snare or practice pad. I take the Thomas Lang approach to the kit when I practice. And sometimes I just record it in the studio to listen back and analyze what was just going on.

Here it is my home drum room. When we bought this house some years ago, the possibility of the drum room was an important factor that helped to chose it.
The old garage had to be sacrificed in the benefit of THE room, difficult decision that took me looooong 10 secs of thinking :)
I put some effort in the pictures: I want to show them to my dad, who lives in another city, and never could come here to see the house.

Here is my new practice space. It will be a home studio once i order the Tascam US1800 and some mic cables. Dont mind the wet floor. I plan on adding more foam and building some bass traps asap. Jaun your room is sick!!!!!! I would cut off a pinky toe to have that in my house.

My practice drum kit. I use this WAY more than more normal one as my current life doesn't allow for a lot of real playing. (i.e. two small children).

I bought the DW practice pad set that goes directly on real drums. Then I cobbled together some old snare stands and stuff, constructed a kick drum practice pad, bought some practice symbols and made this. It's great for learning sticking patterns and practicing.
