View Full Version : My first custom drum, few questions...

Hey, so im currently working on building my first custom snare. So far, i'm in the early stages; I only have my bearing edges cut and my snare beds. Right now, my art student friend is painting the shell for me. I was wondering if I should put a finish over the paint and then drill my holes for lugs, or drill my holes and then put the finish on. Also, what kind of finish should i use? I want it to shine, but not a super heavy high gloss. Any suggestions?

I might use a high gloss lacquer before drilling, to protect the paint job, then apply another coat after drilling just to seal up the exposed wood in the holes and to add some more shine.
Thats just my opinion, related to other wood working projects, there are some really excellent drum builders on here who might have a different opinion though :)

drill last, color sanding and buffing are a pain with holes

Finish and then drill.
I'd finish it with a gloss polyurethane. Its water proof and durable.
