I've been playing drums for about 4 years and have been in to any kind of music ( afro cuban, jazz , fusion, prog rock, funk ... )
But for now i wanna try to play metal music and blast beats !
Does someone has some advices for left hand speed ( cause i can't go over 120 bpm with 16 th note with my left hand ) or any ideas of exercices ?
Thank you !

An exersize I do is play 16ths with the left hand (on snare) and 8ths with the right hand (on a cymbal) for one measure then switch to 8ths with the left and 16ths on the right for one measure.
It is up to you if you want to play the 16ths only on the snare or not.

At what tempo do you practice this exercice ?

As fast as you can do it cleanly.

I have a great exercise, set up your kit opposite, so you can ride with your backbeat hand. Nothing gets the weak hand on par with the strong hand like riding. The shuffle pattern is a good one to practice riding w/ your weak hand after you get straight 8ths happening cleanly.

On a whim (also because my right foot had gone to sleep) I tried doing this yesterday, and my God that was difficult. I can play left foot bass OK so long as I'm riding with my right hand, but trying to play the basic 4/4 beat while riding with the left as well genuinely sounded like I'd just picked up the sticks for the first time. It were terrible.
larryace,
your idea is great and a very direct and beneficial method to enhance the left hand/side. I think simply focusing on open playing a lot more and also doing a lot left hand/side lead does the trick also, at least that's what I do.
