Hey guys,
so this is the song for the "drummer of tomorrow" contest:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou4YI-cwl-0
A cover of the song "99 Flavours" by Chick Corea Electric Band.
The piano and synths are played bei Santi Banks (also an user in this forum), guitars by my brother, soprano sax by a friend and the bass is played by a good friend of mine!!
I really hope you like it =)
Thanks
David

Only just getting to this now David.
I liked it, your playing was technically excellent, but it didn't move me nearly as much as your latest solo piece. It wasn't so much the playing choices, probably more to do with the material. It came across, to me at least, as more of a technical exercise than a musical performance. Again, not so much the drumming. I think the instrument sounds on the backing music lacked depth & timbre. The whole thing was just a bit soulless.
Please don't take this as a reflection on your playing skills, it isn't, you're a great player, but this needed some omph!
Is this to be submitted for a competition? If so, I'd be very tempted to rework your last solo piece such that it reflects more of your personal style. Just saying. Whatever the path, good luck.

Nice! If it's for a competition, I would work on getting the kick-work a bit tighter in the beginning(something I'm also working on).

Hey,
thanks for the replies!
@keep it simple:
no worries - i won't hate you, haha ;)
but I understand your points though!
@thaard:
yeah the first 3 kik hits sound a bit of.. but actually i'm sure it's not be but the backing. I listened to the drum-tracks alone to a click (as I always do) before I gave it my mixer and everything sounded okay.
Thanks anyway!

I agree with Andy on this one. Wow skills but I'd prefer it a bit less polite.
Hopefully not hated ... :)

oh yes YOU ARE HATED!!!! :( not! haha ;)
kidding.
what my problem was with choosing a song:
it was limited to max 3 minutes!! which is totally crap in my opinion.. even the solo should be between 3-5 minutes...
but anyway, that was the coolest song I like which we could cut down to 3 minutes...
I'll let you know what happens =)

A bit more meaty David, but the bass is really low in the mix, especially for a drum demo. Do you have control of the backing track mix? I like to hear the drums working with the bass guitar. Even the rhythm guitar is low. The keys are very high, & I think that's what gives the backing track a soulless & slightly "budget" feel. Great drumming, but the bass drum could do with a slight lift too.

Hi KIS (sorry I short your name), I recorded the keys and mixed the whole thing. Thanks for your feedback. For some reason, the video still sounds very different from what I hear here in Logic (as in, much more mudd). The video had to be sent in tonight so unfortunatly, tweaking the mix is not an option anymore :( But we will do some other songs too. I'll keep your comments in mind!

I'll keep your comments in mind!Hey Santi (do I have that right?), great playing & a great effort all round. My comments were made in the context of a set piece recording to feature the drums. A totally different approach to a mix appropriate for general listening. In a drum biased recording, it's good to have the bass higher than usual in the mix, so the drum performance can be appreciated as more of a rhythm section thing.

Yeah you may be right! =)
But I think the jury, 7 guys including Dom Famularo and many other german drum-pros will be able to judge the drumming, even they're not louder then the other stuff =)
at least i hope.. :D

at least i hope.. :DI think (& hope) you're right. They're probably looking much more deeply into the playing mechanics, whereas I'm much more of a vibe guy. Good luck mate!
