I need a funk tune. I want to get my acquaintance, a s**t hot bass player, on board with a funk tune for a jam night we're both involved in.

requirements. It needs to be:

1. A two bar funk groove on the drums
2. A relatively well-known tune to suit the jam night audience

Any ideas folks?

I think that fits the bill perfectly. I had thought of it and rejected it cos of the horns, but we'll just have to get the guitarists onto that part of the job! :)

I think you'll be hard pressed to find old school funk hits (especialy james brown ones) without horns in them ;).

Another goody is this one that was on the Vic firth website a while ago. Got to be real by Cheryl Lynn.

Feels more like pop/disco to me but the bassguitar and drum part is amazingly groovy. Have fun!

Try

"Shame", Evelyn Champagne King
"Fly Robin Fly", Silver Convention
"Stayin Alive", Bee Gees

I know I know...not the raunchiest funkiest of tunes, but I love them... good luck,

You beat me to it.

Cissy Strut. Awesome groove.

Or what about 'The Chicken"? I would think bass players would jump all over that. Probably like a guitar player asking us if we wanted to jam on Moby Dick.

Well, I suggested Cold Sweat. A few hours later he suggested Tower of Power's Diggin on James Brown, which I'm happy with. Apparently he knows of a frustrated funk guitarist who'll be keen too :)
