Hey there DW!
As most of you know I am always looking for the "next big thing". I think I just found it!
Shine drum company has accomplished themselves in the drumming industry already, and make some of the best drums I've ever heard.
I was browsing their site (http://www.shinedrums.com/ver2008/). When I saw their "Select Custom Series" set. It costs a mere 1,300$ US.
I have recently gotten a job lined up, and I will have around this amount soon.
The link for this kit is : http://www.shinedrums.com/products/selectcustom/index.htm
I will replace all heads (duh). and probably use my Pork Pie.
Whats your thoughts people??

looks like a great deal to me. tube lugs, vibrant sparkle finishes, and available custom stripes for 1300 seems unreal. shine always stood out to me amongst the other custom builders

i would because those affordable, pre sized line of drums that custom companies sometimes offer usually get the axe from lack of sales. my buddy is selling his custom shine kit with similar sizes as those for 1000...

I'm really good friends with the owner of a Family owned chain surf- shop.
For my 16th birthday, He said I can have a job no problem and start the next day. Every month with the hours I will be working I will get about 1,000.
I will keep the Gretsch as a gigging kit. (Maybe).

Mapex----Maniac
01-15-2011, 05:29 AM
And by the way if your going to fork over 1300 you might as well look for other drum kits like.........
Gretsch renown
(used) Mapex Saturn
Tama b/b
Tama maple
Pearl masters
And others in that price range

Wow that's great! If your getting 1000 a month then why settle for a 1300 kit, save your money and get the exact kit that you want
I would recommend a complete custom kit like a pearl masterworks, Gretsch USA, sjc, ect
The shine kit really isn't "custom" but the higher end kits of them are.
If you get 1000 a month save up for 3 or 4 months and you can get your dream kit!

Like a Precision Drum Co. Light blue acrylic with chrome bass drum hoops, and die-cast everything??
That is my dream right there!

Then go for it! The possibilities are endless when you can fork over 3000-4000 bucks on drum gear, but make sure that you are completely sure that you like the drums and that you would be happy with your big investment in the future, don't be upset later about not liking the sound of the drums, always try them out before you buy.

nothing wrong with these kits, but i think what joey is looking for is a custom kit with a well known custom name on it, which there is nothing wrong with. i was the same way when i was younger. i absolutely love custom drums, as i own a custom kit myself, and sometimes the attention to detail and the dedication being put into "your own kit" as they build it is worth every penny. its just a piece of mind you cant get with a production line drum kit

Well I'm not sure! But you could probably contact a dealer that sells acrylics near you and see if you can test one out. Not completely sure about this though.

I called Guitar Center about the ddrum Diaton acrylic (just to hear acrylic in person). They said all acrylic drums are special order and they cannot order one in unless I pay 35% up front :(.

Actually it's the drummer that endorses the drum company after he or she is accepted by that company.

One thing about buying from any company that will no longer be in business is you may not be able to get add on drums and more so, any parts that might fail on your kit. This includes lugs, hoops and mounting hardware.

When it comes to acrylic drum kits they are very loud and sterile sounding. I never owned any but played a few over the years, in fact just a couple of months ago. It was a Tama Mirage. In my opinion, it doesn't come near to the sound of a wooden shell kit and again in my opinion, they're not very versatile.

Dennis.

A used one, yes, but I'd never send money to a company that is going under. If they do go bankrupt while you are awaiting product you will be out the cash and have no product.

On the acrylic note, they sound ok. They are bright and loud and they don't have the overtones or character of wood drums. The idea of some mics not working is really odd to me. I've recorded my fiberglass kit many times and it is easily as loud as acrylics and the engineer and I had no fear using $3-5,000 tube and ribbon mics.

Call around. There are many stores who stock acrylic kits from time to time. There may even be one you don't know of within an acceptable driving distance.

While I do respect your conviction in the kits you desire, many custom shop kits have lower resale value because while they are worth the cash to you, they may not be for ANYONE ELSE. Many of the things you desire are fad design elements. Deep bass drums, offset lugs, powder coated hardware, and double-wide hoops are a few things that will fall by the design wayside in a short while. I ordered a custom kit based on what I wanted at the time and I'm thrilled I've had the option of adding drums and cutting a bass drum down. In having the kit I thought I wanted I discovered it was not an optimal sounding kit for my needs.

Deep bass drums are actually not something that I like for looks. I actually like the more "echoey, boomy" Sound they produce.
Offset lugs aren't something I like too much, neither is powder coated hardware. I actually only really like acrylics for their look yes, but the other stuff isn't necessary.

Hi Joey,

Congrats on getting in to the world of custom drums!! Personally, I endorse SJC custom drums out of Dudley Mass. They are great guys and the workmanship I guarantee you is better then just about anything else out there. See for your self. www.sjcdrums.com.

After the experience I had with them, I'll never buy drums from another company. Really, these guys are amazing.

Forget the Shine drums...the company is going under, check out the DRUM magazine website.Acrylic drums are pleasing to the eye but still have build problems are heavy tuff to maintain, scratch easily and have limited tuning range.Try tuning an acrylic snare up high and you WILL crack the shell.Stick with Ludwig,Tama,Pearl.DW.Custom drums historicly bring lower resale prices than their large company counterparts.Or not...try to get parts or a warranty honored a year fron now.Good luck.

If they're going under, it's probably because they're buried in legal bills. There has to be plenty of lawyers suing them for making some of the most hideous finishes in the industry. Most of them are butt ugly. Saw one kit that was intentionally designed to look like mud. Hope they sound better than they look. Then again, I'm sure they sound like every other "custom" drum company that uses Keller shells.

Exactly. These "custom"drum makers just dress up Keller shells.I may be leaving some one out but i'm pretty sure only Ludwig and DW are the only US drum makers that make their own shells.

"....Right now" being the most important part of the post.

:-)

It's fun to plot, and speculate, and dream of new gear, but it amazes me that you seem to think a new kit is really going to do anything but look different than what you have now--which is a really nice kit that A LOT of people would be very happy owning as the only kit they'd ever want to buy.

I hope someday you come to your senses.
Which will probably be when you actually have to fork out the dough after working to save it up.

Live and learn I guess.

Good luck dude.

Hey, I play a Shine definition series kit and I now proudly endorse Shine Drums UK. Unfortunately not long after my endorsement came through I heard about Shine Drums USA closing after struggling through the recession and making the decision based on hitting their lowest figures ever. However, I can confirm that Shine Drums UK are still running strong at this present moment, but after talking to someone who works there who didn't give much away but it sounded as though as soon as they have sold off all their stock they're also finishing up...Sad times. :(

Go with darkhorse... They will give you a great price for what a custom drumkit is sincerely worth, along with having superb quality. I personally don't own one, but have played them and they sound great, it's a keller shell, can't go wrong with it! I went with Phattie Custom Drums due to their unique sound they have for some reason compared to other companies that use keller shells, I was so impressed and had to go with it. The pricing is extremely fair, by saying they don't charge you to per say 'off set' your lugs, which I just laugh and bypass the companies that charge for that, makes me laugh. Just overall a fair price for a custom kit, along with great customer service, and very high craftsmanship with their kits as well.

SJC and Truth are still great companies, they over charge for sure, but if you want that SJC or Truth name all over your kit and have the cash, go for it! Those companies more so dress up their drums than treat the shells for sound, just basics with bearing edges and such, I wasn't ever impressed with them sound wise, just typical maple sounding shells.

I'm leaning towards DHP right now... But that TRUTH is still there...
But I think I'll go to DHP because your right! They don't overprice, and off-setting is free, tube lugs are free, rims mounting is free, heads are free, so are Bass drum O's.
I saw a company that charged 35$ per O'. Could you believe that?!?
