Here is a photo of my hand percussion. The remo Djembe is what I take hiking and camping because it is the most weather resistant. The others stay in the studio because they were WAY too expensive to take camping and risk theft or damage. The skateboard was just there. good entertainment on tour or if I am bored.

Cool drums man. I love bongos

Thank you very much. I love them too.

For clarification though, the large remo is a 12" Djembe, The medium ceramic drum is a 10" Djembe and the small ceramic drums is an 8" doumbek.

maybe if I get super ambitous I will go into my storage warehouse and dig out my vintage drums. I have a few goodies like a: hand painted calfskin head, wood hoop, cat gut snares snare drum from a boys band in the 20's with case, sticks, stand, music and photo of band member. I also have an original picolo snare from god knows when. it is a single headed drum with calfskin head and catgut snares right against the single head with a small screw to adjust tension. Man I need go digging around one of these weekends.

RAMBLER ALERT!!!! sorry... :)

hey cool, lets make this our OTHER DRUMS thread. heres my sweet djembe. as a south african i have played and tried a lot of djembes over the years, and then i found this one. this is the loudest djembe ever. it has massive tonal separation and a beautiful timbre. it was very expensive though, but i felt i needed to buy one and so i spent years finding 'the one'. it is called: HIPPO. for first time djembe buyers a sign of a good djembe is the closeness of the knots around the rim. like lugs, the more the better. mine are so close you cannot see a rim, its all solid knots.

J

PS: the strap means i can hang it from my waste and walk around with it at comfortable playing height.

I'm going to start working night shifts on the start of august, and getting a new Djembe was part of my plan's in the spending region :D, my older brother gave me a number to a guy who has them made on demand, so i'll give him a call sometime soon.

I'm sure this is going to be a great investment!

a thread for posting "other" percussion yes! I'm glad this forum seems to love both. Alot of people that play hand percussion ONLY play hand percussion and only respect other hand percussionists and I always found that odd and unfortunate. I think I'm gonna go take pics of my stuff now haha.

Ok, this will be a two post deal.

Starting with Djembe's, Bongo's, and Conga's.

First pic is my good djembe, it is from the Ivory Coast. The head is damaged, but it is still playable, and has great tone. I got this from a garage sale.

Pics 2 and 3 are my beat up djembe, I got it free with my otehr djembe. It has crack in the side, the head is really beat up, and the strings would probally break if I tried to tighten the head.

4 is my LP Aspire bongos.

5 is my bongos I got from the same garage sale as the 2 djembes. The one head is a natural skin, that WASN'T SHAVEN. So it is a fur head. They are also pretty beat up.

6 is my LP Aspire Congas.

Two is my Talking Drum, it was fairly cheap from a non music store.

Three is my $12 Remo Doumbek. This is my drum I take anywhere.

Four is my ceramic doumbek.

Five is my Copper Darbuka I got this used with a spare head and carrying case for $80.

Last is my Misc Percussion. Most of which was less than $5 a piece.

This is the kit I use with band rehearsals and performances. I usually don't include the bongo's, they are crap and I barely use them anyway.
The kit is a Pearl Export series, with pinstripe heads on the bass and toms, and a remo ambassador on the snare. The cymbals are:
Paiste 302 14" hats and 20" ride
Zildjian 16" crash (not entirely sure what type)
Stagg 8" splash (not sure what type but it sounds awesome!)
Sabian B8 10" splash and 18" China (my own)

I also bring my own Tama Iron Cobra power glide pedal to rehearsals and gigs.
Sorry for the low-quality pic... don't have any better ones.

I play tabla, but have never studied the Ragas. I had a few lessons in Varanassi to get the basic techniques and then when I got home practiced, but to western rhythms. Its an incredible instrument and takes a lifetime and a bit more commitment than I can give to master them properly, but I have used them in bands and in recordings nevertheless

I also play djembe and darbuka, but more traditionally the djembe, it's a fantastic drum.

As for congas, I have no idea about the techniques used to play them but would love to learn, they seem incredibly involved... too many drums not enough spare time

I don' have any pics available right now, but I have a pair of LP aspire bongos, a "north african snare drum" I bought from a store in florida called Hunt's Art and Artifacts.(it's a ceramic type drum made with a shape similar to that of a djembe, but it has no strings or rim to tie down the head. The head[which I assume is calfskin] seems to be dried onto the shell, and attached under it is a pair of twinelike strings that act as snares in giving a neat sort of 'buzz'ing sound.) I also have a large irish drum that I know little about that my dad got from my grandmother, and an great old Leady vibraphone that I'm renting from my teacher, I believe it's about 90.

The copper darbuka (doumbek?); does remo make any heads that fit it? i was looking at getting that same drum a while back before my funds dried up.

Has anyone tried remo's new synthetic, rope tensioned djembes? I'm thinking about getting some hand percussion (once the money shows up), and i was wondering if these are worth $300.

I've heard deer hide doesn't make good drum heads because it's too stretchy. How does your sound?

Der Februar
03-28-2008, 07:01 AM
When we first put the hide one, before it dried, it sounded great. It was really resonant and kinda high pitched. Now that it is fully dry, it still sounds cool but in a really different way. It isn't resonant and is kind of dead sounding. I think it has more to do with the log we used than the hide, but it definitely did stretch out some. Before it was dry, someone took it from me and started playing it pretty hard with a drumstick, and I think that is the main reason it stretched out.

Before it was dry, someone took it from me and started playing it pretty hard with a drumstick, and I think that is the main reason it stretched out.

It's cool you made your own drum out of something you hunted and a log you worked and you did the project with your dad. You should put up photos of the drum so we can see it - I don't think anyone has every posted anything like that around here.

I recently bought a used Cajon, a Schlagwerk Cajon "la perù". Some scratches and dents but in good condition altogether; the front plate and inner mechanisms are still in mint condition. It's a pretty nice instrument, though I am not the most knowledgeable guy when it comes to cajons or how to play them. The front plate is glued on at the bottom, but screwed with 5 screws at the top. You can tighten them for more bass or loosen them to hear the front plate slap the rest of the construction. I went for something in between, tightening the middle three and having the outer two somewhat loose so I get a good bass and a nice high-pitched slap when I need one. I'm still experimenting on snare tension to get the sound I want, and on how to properly play it of course.

Majestic drums are a Dutch brand, aren't they? I played a Majestic kit once, they make good stuff!

This is my Bodhran with tippers, and two pairs of bones. When I first got my Bodhran I thought "this should be easy to play. I mean, it's a drum. I'm a drummer." WRONG! What a learning curve these instruments have been, and so much fun to play once you get the basic hang of them, especially a few pints of Guinness!
If you're not familiar with how the Bodhran and bones are played/sound, have a look on youtube. There are some brilliant players there.

Here are some of my Drumskull African drums:

Very Back: Guinea Extra Large Dununba Melina Wood
Back: Guinea Congas - Quinto, Conga Hare Wood (Tumba is out of picture)
Middle: Guinea Djembe Djalla Wood, Guinea Djembe Lenke Wood
Front: Guinea Djembe Lenke Wood, Guinea Bugarabu Hare Wood

If you are looking for professional quality African drums, check out Drumskull; they are pricy but they are the very best.

Hello

Here are some of my frame drums I have picked up during my travels:

Tar and bendir frame drums from Kuwait and Morocco
Mazhar from Egypt
Kanjira from India
Cooperman/Velez Tar, Bendir and Mediterrasian Tambourine from USA
Daf from Bahrain

I believe that kit drummers benefit and develop when they play other types of drums (e.g. hand drums and frame drums for example). Frame drums are nice and relatively quiet instruments to play.

For an excellent example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTaehZN2xL4&feature=related

I recently bought a Djembe:

http://i39.tinypic.com/1zwg7eq.jpg

It's a relatively cheap one. But it sounds good! It has a very nice focused bass sound. Though there is a flaw in the bearing edge, I'll get that looked after if I need to replace the head some day. the tone is about a semitone higher near the dent in the bearing edge and across from it.

I just took everything out of the "drum room" cleaned and painted. I painted a Gretsch Harlequin Sun Amber Gloss finish (from Gretsch's New For 2009 catalog) design on one wall. I took the catalog into HomeDepot building supply and they scanned it and mixed me up some paint. I still have some work to do in there - shelves and mouldings. So I just have some of my Valje drums and a Toad Conga in there for now. They sound soooo good in that room right now! I may put my RotoToms and Metalephone in there as well.

Here's the room as of today...........sorry about the practice pad on the SuperTumba. Actually I've been playing (not with the sticks) the congas and leaving the pad on there and it makes a huge bass tone!

The Gretsch drum is my latest addition - eBay last month (I've posted elseware here). It's a 1949 (my birthyear) Renown Mahogany Parade drum. I cleaned it up - I didn't restore because did not want to mess with the badge.

Here is my Indian Kanjira with a monitor lizzard skin. It is a pretty old Kanjira but in excellent condition (I would not have bought it if it was new since the monitor lizzard is an endangered species). The skin is exceptionally thin and when wet, it becomes very pliable so that you can "bend" the pitch the way a guitarist bends his strings.
