Has anyone ever seen this website? (http://www.icanplaydrums.net/bigdrum_jan1_2006.htm) Somehow I get emails enticing me to buy. Although most of the stuff seems a bit too easy for me, it does seem like a LOT of material for little money. I need help with ideas mostly, not technique or musicality.
Has anyone used this product? Does anyone know anything about Jack Bennett? He sounds Australian, so maybe you Aussies out there know him?

That seems pretty good to me, I only been playing for a month but those lessons seem pretty well detailed. I may look into getting this unless some guys have had a negative experience with it in the past. I like the way the fully explain how to play fool in the rain, if thats an indication of what the rest of the lessons are like then I think it's pretty good. Even though I am not doing triplets or 16th notes yet.

that webpage kinda looks like a get-rich-quick gimmick, but when you look at the videos, you can see that he's a genuine guy that knows what he's talking about. i like his style a lot.

Well he sends emails all the time with samples. I think this guy really puts a lot into it with very little funds. I might dive in and get some of the stuff.

I too am interested in plunking down the cash for his full course. His monthly vids are cool and he seems like just a nice guy, ya know? Anyway, if anyone does it before me...lemme know what the full monty is like.

I was hopeing someone would bring this up. I too am in the same boat, ive been receiving the emails for quite some time now, and I really like the look of it. The features each month are good, some nice fill ideas etc and he demonstrates really well, and seems like a genuine guy.
However as hold-the-groove said, it does look a hell of a lot like a "get rich quick" website, especially with all the testimonials, which I usually just dismiss as being phoney, which is why I hold back.
However if someone can reassure me with good experiences of this then I may well also give it a go.

Count me in to...I was looking for some kind of reviews on it but couldn't find any...
I've just signed up for the free lessons which look pretty cool, at around £40 it'd be great value by the looks of things but if it is genuine why have such an awful website?
Its a similar layout to the onehandeddrumroll.com which looks equally dubious except there's more 'walking the walk' to it with the free lessons and clips etc.
I like the rest of us it seems am eagerly awaiting some positive feedback on this one.

I got it.
It depends what you are looking for, but I was looking for some more variety, and his lessons span over so many different genres, that I learned a lot of different grooves.
Jazz, Funk, whatever...
Also, you can chat with him every day, or call, or whatever if you have any questions or anything you want him to cover.
I kinda like it.
but again, I am not pro. he has been in Modern drummer a couple of times (I think, I have only seen it once).
He is skilled, and easy to understand...Its expensive, but I thought it was worth it.

I'm hoping to play basically fast rock. Is there a large rock section? Learning some latin or jazz/funk stuff would be cool enough, I guess. But is there enough on the ROCK to make it worth it's price? (what was the final $ tally, if ya don't mind me asking)
And how does this compare to other DVD's or Books out there? Cause I think this is much more expensive, no?

Oh man...THAT'S why I can't stand a friggin' thing people say around here!
Texas was bad, but the North Yorkshire stuff is killing me!
I got this month's installment, and I must say it is much too easy for me. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" broken down for me? Gee, thanks. Never would have figured that one out!

I wont even try and type in a 'scouse' manner, it would probably look like a foreign language to our american friends!
I agree Stu, I was dissapointed with the smells like teen spirit, however some stuff in previous months has been pretty good, "late in the evening" was pretty good, aswell as a fill he referred to as the "Weckl 9" was also something I now use in my playing a bit.
I dunno, I think in 650+ videos or whatever there is, theres bound to be some useful stuff in there surely.

Oh Man Stu!?!? Dude, once you get the weckl 9 going, you will wonder how u ever played without it, for me its the ultimate "wtf did he just do??" type of fill, especially when you extend it into 18 notes, I like to spread it out across the toms and finish again on the snare, sounds amazing, although quite hard to throw in songs as its a bit OTT for most stuff.
The Paul Simon song JetBlack mentioned also just happens to be late in the evening, which encase you dont know already, its Steve Gadd playing a really nice Mozambique rhythm, good stuff.
Anyway, enjoy!

yeah man, those are the fills I'm always looking for. They rarely fit in songs, but they are great to rip out for solos and breaks.
I remember figuring out "Late in the evening a LONG time ago". It was a crowning moment for me. I never did figure out what part of the drum shells/rims he was playing on though.
Anyone know why it's the Weckl 9 and not the Weckl 12, since 4/4 music is so much more common than 3/4? Does that pattern not work in 4s? Also, I overlooked that clip before, because his drumkit sound does absolutely NOTHING for the coolness of that lick.

Yeah Stu - I used to work with someone from leeds - it was an experience - I do generally love the northern accent but that can get a bit much in the wrong hands!
Anybody recommend any other good fills/tricks? (I've been playing about 18 months so am new to this drum trickery)

Stu
Good question Stu, it does seem that chop is made for 3/4, which is fairly useless for people who mostly play 4/4.
However after watching Weckl execute this once or twice, and playing around with it alot myself, the way I started using it is like this, ive tried to write it down as best as possible. . .
R L L R R L R L L R L L F F R L F F Rl F (rest)
Hopefully you can make out that ive made this into a fill that covers a whole bar when playing 4/4. You can change stickings and choose whether u want to hit snare, toms or whatever but this is my favorite way to do it. The phrasing is all triplets, 2 per beat.
Starts with a simple (if you know how!) 6-stroke roll on the snare, which covers beat one, then half of the 6 stroke, just the RLL starting on beat 2, and then the weckl 9 becomes the start of the 2nd half of that beat, which is the RLLFFRLFF, so it covers half of beat 2 and the whole of beat 3, then I finish it with a flam on the snare followed by a very quick bass drum, so u get that sort of DAdum type sound. Then a rest and come back in to your beat at the start of the next bar.
I understand this might be difficult to make sense of by reading, if i had the facility to do so id make a recording or video but i havent unfortunately.
Any questions just ask, hope this is of some help.
Neil

Oh Lowender. . .
You may be aware of this one, but a more 'simple' kind of trickery fill is basically playing a double strokes between 1 hand and 1 foot, usually with the hand going a across the toms, so your playing RRFF RRFF RRFF, or LLFF LLFF etc. You can play RLFF or LRFF, but it usually attracts a bit more attention when u do it with one hand, because people cant work out how your playing so many notes and making it look like your doing so little.
Please share if you, or Stu, or anyone else have any more cool fills/tricks.

I read that Dave Grohl - as he doesn't play a double pedal uses a kind of BD FT combo - that technique sounds like it'd be in the same kind of area.
Cheers dude
the only trick (?) I know so far is the old triplet R L F or L R F - an old jazzer showed it to me in my drumming infancy (still there!) and said its used loads

Hi All,
I bought the package a few weeks ago when it was on special offer for $49. I've only been playing for 4/5 months but there is a lot of material on the CD. It's broken down into different 'books' each covering a different aspect e.g. Basics, Ready to play, Rock, Rock Intermediate, Rock Advanced, Jazz Jazz Intermediate, Latin, Advanced Techniques, Advanced Sticking. I also got a few free download books. I like the way he explains something in a video and then you can replay at slow, med and fast speeds watch him playing and see the notes all on one screen. One downsideis that to open each of the ebooks you have to be connected to the internet but can disconnect once it's open.
For a beginner like me it's been really useful to dip into and suppliment my lessons. I'm nowhere near the 'advanced' stuff so couldn't really comment. If you want a specific thing I'm happy to have a look and let you know. For the price I think it's really good value.
Not sure how good Jack Bennett is (I'm not experienced enough to give an opinion) but he seems to know his stuff and has a great manner when explaining things.
Hope this helps
Kevin

I didn't it found me! I got an email saying they had a small number that had damaged CD covers and cases and that they wanted to sell on quickly. So jumped at the chance :-)
If you've signed up for the newsletter and free lessons you get quite a few emails. If you're patient occasionally they send you special offers!
Good luck

I checked his site after getting the link in this thread ... i liked his playing and the way he is explaining ....... now one big question:
When I went to see the price and info about the Advanced drum material ..... it was mentioned that there are two components: firstly a software in a CD and secondly an ebook component.
The ebook combo has got many books ...
But one thing its stated that you need to get an internet connection. Now why is that for ?? Will the software not work if am not connected ?? is it doing any sort of validation with the site regarding the licence or anything ?? Suppose the site goes down after 10months or this guy stops his company ..... does that mean the Software and ebooks will not even open and run properly ???
Can you please verfiy these things ........ I might as well order if its not so "system/site" dependant.
Stu_Strib

The ebooks probably just point to the server that is hosting the videos or something like that. It makes since on his side, so if he changes material he can change it, and you'll get the fresher version everytime.
My question is will it work with Mac?
off to go check

I think I meant to ask this before but I forgot ... any chance I could get an audio or video example of the weckl9? Cuz I'd be quite interested in knowing what it is!
I just got the 49.00 deal too.
The Weckl groove is a 7/8 funk groove that is way above me, but he does break it down and shows how to count it out and play it.

Hi guys,
sorry to talk about my products on your site Bernard, but to quickly clear this up for you guys asking - UDS is a CDROM for PC computer only (not MAC or DVD), the ebooks are essentially folders on the CD (which you copy and run from your hard drive) so you have everything on your computer, not streaming from the internet the way the free lessons and newsletters do. You need to be online when you open any ebook as it checks for permission (like a licence), then once it opens you can disconnect and everything runs as normal.
Hope this helps, Jack

Hey Jack ! good to see you here.
You mean the software is inside that CD and also the ebooks ?? the validation is for opening the software or the ebook ??? .....so i was partially right ...
And it again brings me back to the parent question: What if you decide to close your site after a year ( i mean due to unavoidable business reasons etc) ?? does it mean the s/w or ebook will not open at all? I guess it should be a fair deal that once I pay I become an owner of the CD for life ........ just like any drum tutorial DVD ...... at the end of the day we drummers are buying it for the content i.e lessons not for the software ......... so why should the licencing scheme be recursive ?? in the worse case after a year like a software company you may start asking for a yearly subscription fee !!!!!! ..
am just clarifying my doubts ..... I like your playing.
AND please Jack .. will you please change your site layout a bit !! Unless I had good references from this thread I would not have even tested how good you play !!! your site at first glance looks like "Be A Millionaire in 3 days" kind of giimmicky site ...

Hi again,
The ebooks are written using a third party ebook compiling program www.ebookgenerator.com and they have never gone down, ever. So even if I did, your ebooks would still run.
Hope this helps. If you're still unsure about anything please email me at jackbennett@icanplaydrums.com, I am more than happy to clarify any questions you have. And I'd rather not take up space on Bernhards site if that's ok.

Thanks for answering. Actually posting on the forum cause these are general doubts and its for everyone's ear who wants to make a purchase. After I have foregrounds clear I shall contact you on email for the CD.
And this site is driven by a community model. So, basically it belongs to us and Bernhard is just the custodian assigned by God himself. ;) ....... I guess you and your site is not a competitor to this forum thats why we can freely discuss encourage/discourage it in this thread. Thats why this thread has not been blocked/locked till now in the first place by the mods !!! you are infact getting free publicity !!! (by virtue of your talents offcourse ) ....

Just in case Jack is checkin' in, I was actually very afraid of this sort of thing. I really have grown to hate sloppy pc products. I know the content of this drumming cd is GREAT, because Jack has been sending me a sample a month for about a year now. I'm just afraid to drop that much money on something I'm afraid will be more hassle to get to work than it would be worth.

Stu,
I got the CDs Monday; I installed the software, copied over the folder from CD and have had no problem at all. I’m pretty much a pocket player drummer and I’m always looking for some nice fills, the CDs have been real good in that aspect thus far. I’m also into diversifying my skill set a little so I will start with the jazz portion of the CD this weekend. From what I’ve seen so far he has a lot of great stuff in there, I know you’re a bit advanced on the jazz side of things so I don’t know how well it will do for you in that respect.
Spw
I do know there is a registration process during the installation of the e-book software that asks you to include a user name and password. Did you do the installation or did you just copy the books over?
Gr8,
I copied the cd to a folder on my hard drive, then i double clicked the e player exe file (i watched it load).
When i go to open any of the books, it gives me the login and password screen, when i go to register, it always tells me the name is already taken.
I read all the instructions multiple times, watched the instruction process several times to make sure i wasnt missing a tiny detail.
I don't get it.

spw,
just a shot in the dark here but try registering and logging in using a different name and password.
Thats the problem, every name it try it's tells me is already taken....i have tried so many names, then combinations of letters that no one would have used as a screen name.
there has to be a problem somewhere.
I even deleted and reinstalled a few times, same with the player, hopefully they will contact me to solve this issue.
thanks for your help.

I have never got the system myself, but one of my students did. Its got some good stuff in there, but it looked very user Unfriendly. Plus the Quality is terrible. Sounded like the guy was trying to get money from impulse buyers if you ask me. Plus if your ordering a package, wouldnt you want it to be on a DVD or something you can use in fron of your drums?

I looked into Icanplaydrums. I dont know, it looks a little sketchy. He seems like a get rich quick kind of guy. Maybe im wrong though, il lhave to try it. Quality looks poor though, i would rather pay money into Langs new Dvd, or Mike portnoys DVD;s. Im a fan of the Nice Drum sound, over the hundreds of similar beats.

I guess Jack > Jared
I'm going to subscribe and check out the lessons. Then I might get the CD. Wish it were on DVD with better video quality though.

I studied music at the same college with Jack Bennett. Well, sort of, he was I think in his last year (3rd) when I started. Just after he had won the 'Aus up and coming drummer of the year' comp.
He was a pretty damn fine player back then and I can't imagine much has changed. It was great listening to these last year guys jamming/practicing away, kept me motivated.
Anyway, I'm sure it's hard to put alot of great info into a package with high production on probably rather limited budget.

I just got mine in the mail. I own quite a collection of DVD's by most of the top names (Weckl, Lang, Portnoy, Igoe's Groove Essentials etc...), and, yes the quality and polish of the professionally made products isn't quite there, and it is a bit of a hassle to have to run it under BootCamp on my MacBook, but I must say the content is impressive. And I have yet to see another product that runs through the notated music AS the video is playing. This is a great way to learn to read while learning the beat at the same time. He's a genuine guy who knows what he's talking about, and doesn't pretend to be what he's not. I'm really looking forward to delving into his product, as soon as I get my snare drum repaired :)

I'm a drummer from Holland and found Jack Bennetts site www.icanplaydrums.com surfing the internet. At first I found his mailing a bit agressive and didn't know what to think about it actually. But I finally decided to buy his complete UDS (Ultimate Drumming Solution) cd-roms collection. I am very pleased with the cd's. They are more ore less exactly what is told about them on his site. And the customer service is great. Yesterday I got the mailing that his new dvd collection "UDS 2007" has been released. I bought this collection as well because of the much better quality of video and audio the dvd's provide, and the internet is no longer needed to start up the lessons. In case of the cd-roms you have to register the first time you use a part (e.g. rock, latin, etc.). The following sessions start up without registering, but internet is needed for some kind of unlocking. Works great, but with the dvd's internet is no longer needed. If you concider buying the newly released dvd collection "UDS 2007", it is worth to check out his 80% reduction for the first 200 buyers. I am one of those lucy ones. So: I think it is worth every penny buying his collection, because of the hundreds of lessons and it is really for absolute beginners to advanced players. I wish there were more guys like Jack displaying there instruments the way he does!! Goodluck.

No I disagree, I think id be more incluned to go with Jared Falk - his better than Jack Bennet and right now he's offering $89.95 for his Rock Drumming System plus hes throwing in his special 1 Hand Roll DVD. Check it out. I would buy anything by Jared Falk over Jack Bennett anyday. He does more for the community, better respected, is a better player, better teacher, nuff said. Just look at what he did with Mike Mikalkoe who is a profesinal

They could at least participate a bit first and get a post count before they come in here with an agenda. That way it wouldn't be so obvious.

Is this sarcasm? Surely Mr. Falk, in light of prior posts concerning his methods and abilities, would not stoop to such tactics himself? Too obvious, don't you think? The statements, if not sarcastic, may be some of the most misplaced and confused I have ever seen. As I have previously said, I know little about Mr, Falk, but Jack is a serious drummer and a serious teacher - I would bet money that he would not and had no need to post statements from a ringer on this site.

How many times can you be wrong in a single post? I think this really takes the biscuit. Jared has law suits over him! Surely that doesn't happen to drummers as respected as you claim him to be?

"by myself i wouldn't have no boss... i'd just be raisin' my lonely dental floss" FZ
I don't like peepl ebossin mee all around when i play drums
if i want bossin i needs to be gettinpaid
most peeple on these here methods want to boss you and have you pay them to boot, and i don't like that unless you're really good lookin' in high heels and a short skirt.
with the drums i like to learn the old fashioned way... By Accident....
this can occur frequently and works rather well if i stay away from the internet and play my drums a whole bunch and go to see alot of live shows with really good drummers
it's the osmosis method.... but it works for me
once ya get caught (stuck) in the the WWW.com it can really slow ya down
It's mostly hacks who can't hardly play any better than Mr Potato Head who are the main ones who want me to pay them money and let them boss me around & around with their rigid lesson plan... but hacks do gotta make money somehow and maybe this is the best way for them.
Still in all ... I find them entertaining.... but in a sick way
I do enjoy fostering contempt for these self appointed wonders... but mostly I know for sure that I don't wanna let them teachin' me anything.... I know that for sure! YessireeBob&BoyHowdyChowderheads.~!
I also know I've never wanted to play drums for Barry Manilow or Wayne Newton.... I feel satisfied knowing this.
I really like the drums a whole bunch and then some!

Hi, this is Stephan again (sdecarp). I'm surprised to see all kinds of comments on my post about my experiences with the website and lessons of Jack Bennett. For the record, I am not implying Jack Bennett is the best drummer or teacher of the world at all, just that I'm very pleased to finally having encountered a drumming teacher on the internet who doesn't has the goal to display himself and all off his skills, but just trying to reach drummers like me who wish to learn more about drumming. He just loves drumming. My initial post was not meant to stoop any drummer, but to express my enthousiasm for one of the many drummers/teachers, who from my point of view does an exellent job coaching un- and experienced drummers. For me it's all about getting better on my drums and the fun of playing in a band, not about who is a better drummer or anything like that. Every musician knows there is no such thing as 'best drummer', 'best gitar player' and so on, because it always comes down to apples and pears... Let's just have fun playing our instruments, right? Regards, Stephan

I was checking out the site, and I have to say I'm thinking of getting the set. While cynicism and bitterness have trained me to find it almost creepy the way people buy the set then give it such high praise (kind of like it's a brainwashing kit), all the clips I've seen of Mr. Bennett show that he's a really good drummer who is also a really good teacher, and even when people savage him on YouTube (as 13-year-old metal drummers seem to always do) he doesn't stoop to their level. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with a drummer trying to earn money as long as he's doing it honestly and that seems the case here.
My only sticking point is if I should get the DVD set alone or pay the extra $15 for the CD-ROM. The CD-ROM would be a good holdover until the DVDs actually ship, but I don't know how useful a CD-ROM is for learning drumming. A DVD is already rather cumbersome. It's not like I have a computer at my kit. Plus there's still the whole 'required internet connection' thing which means I couldn't bring the CD to my practice area even if I had a laptop.
Any thoughts from other prospective/current buyers?
Oh and Mr. Bennett if you read this, note that many of your 'explained grooves' are now busted links ... will you be fixing those soon?
Thanks.

I have the Ultimate Drumming Solution - Rock Beginner Pack and I have my PC in front of my kit and loop what I want to practice to. This has helped me alot since I do not have an instructor at this time. I will buy more of Jack's instruction vids since I like them and they work for me.
No need to be negative on here about someone helping others and making some cash doing it.
I have many books with cd's to drum along with but for me nothing beats watching a person and playing along.
