I lived in Suttgart in 1990-1991, and rode the train all the time through Karlsruehe on my way to Kaiserslaughtern to visit my brother stationed in the Army there.
I now live in the largest city in America not on an interstate...(good trivia question). San Angleo, TX. Population 100,000 (80 miles south of Abilene, and in the middle of NOWHERE).
San Angelo is claim to The Los Lonely Boys and Son's of the Desert, for music talent.
I'm was raised in Eugene, OR, a great College town, but with no jobs.
I'm MOVING in October to Harrogate, United Kingdom to live with my new wife who is stationed in the US Military there. Any Brits in here wanna help me get in with some musicians?

I'm from what boils down to be suburban hell... And what's worse, it's a suburb of the number one joke city in America: Albany, NY!!! (So far, I know it's been trashed in Dilbert, Doonesbury, and the Daily Show... any others, let me know...) I'm from a moderately sized town about 5 miles away from the city called East Greenbush. Despite being the butt of almost every joke involving corrupt government and relocation, It's a pretty nice place to live. It's about 150 miles away from both New York and Boston, and 250 from Montreal, and is right at the foothills of the Adirondack mountains. And we have a pretty sweet mall, and 3 really good places (and a few okay ones) that sell drums, although none exclusively. Overall, it's all good, even for the 'burbs.
EDIT: Okay, Albany's been made fun of by Family Guy now, too... GO SOX!!! (My Dad's from CT... I never really had a choice)

From Singapore. Not sure if many have heard of it. it's in Southeast Asia. No, it's not in China. Sometimes known as the little red dot on the map.
I Guess some would say it's a pretty safe place, orderly, clean albeit boring. Am having serious serious trouble finding decent help with the drumming. But this is home and it's nice that there's no natural disasters here.
Man, I'd rather be in San Bernadino feeding the mosquitoes so I can get my hands on those In-N-Out burgers and get more inspiring music... Or lost in Montreal without any french knowledge so I can soak up all the nice grooves.

I live in Ohio. Delaware. Home of Rutherford B. Hayes. The house he grew up in is now a gas station. and Delaware is the home of the Little Brown Jug. One of the biggest Pacer horse races in the world. But it is a relatively small town. There was a murder last night. A big deal around hear. A kid in middle school got shot in the face with a shot gun. Oh. I forgot to mention that this is the fifth fastest growing county in america. It is a nice town to live but nowhere close to the cool places that some of you'll live. If any of you have heard of the Band Iron Horse the drummer gives lessons at the music shop. It is a relatively big band. They were really big in Italy where they originated. I would take lessons but from what I have heard all he does is try to sell the products he is indorsed by. Taye and Attack. good drummer though.

Im from a very disturbing place....a little town in Ireland called "Dundalk"....dundalk is situated right on the border between north and south Ireland(I presume most of you know about the troubles we had over here for years?),therefore Dundalk is full of IRA people....very republican, and closed-minded people who give birth to narrow-minded,violent children, who are now my age and seem to attack me and friends who are "freaks"(we wear t-shirts saying such foreign things as "Nirvana","Led Zeppelin","Pixies" and "Thin Lizzy"oooooooh we must be total freaks...."nyah cut yer hair ya freeeeeek") like me.....Dundalk has been described,in a recent publication of a lonely planet travel guide(and there was total outrage over this)as "a charmless town"...god what an understatement!!!if i was writing that i wud have said "God stay away from here, its a total scumhole....."
thats why i hope that as soon as i leave university i can go an live in Germany...a beautiful, crazy, brilliant country......Berlin is one of the greatest places on this planet!!!

Hey man, welcome. Drummers in general are crazy men, so you've come to the right place.
I am a native of Atlanta, Georgia and have lived and worked here my entire life, which recently passed the half-century mark. My family roots in the area can be traced back to the late 1700's and the majority of my relatives on both sides have remained close to the area. I did live for eight years in Athens, GA, some 65 miles away or so, while attending university. Chances are good (at this late date) that I will live out the remainder of my days in Atlanta which is fine. It's a great place. Over the many years, though, I have occassionally toyed with the idea of living somewhere else in the U.S. or maybe even abroad. I've had the good fortune to travel throughout the world as well as see a great deal of my own country, and there have been places I've felt a natural affinity for. Each trip has been an enlightening and educational experience but actually living somewhere is a very different thing altogether. I've noticed that some folks on the forum have lived in a variety of cities and even different countries - many have called a lot of places home. I'd be interested in hearing about where members have lived and their thoughts about those places - good and bad. Also, any good musical scenes?

04-14-2006, 06:06 AM
Well, I've lived in Northern California my whole life (17 years). From what I've seen and heard of the rest of the country, I've started to realize that we've got it really good here. No terrible hurricanes or tornados or freezing weather for multiple months at a time... That's not to say that it's 70 degrees and sunny all year, as we have had i think 300% of our average rainfall this year, levees are breaking, streams overflowing, my front yard is still draining from being filled up with water yesterday.
That said, we have it relatively mild here compared to the rest of the country. I really like it here and do plan on staying here the rest of my life.
As for the music scene, people say that it's really good here. I can't say much personally because I don't see that much happening, but I may just be used to it having lived here all my live.
Norcal is a very relaxed place. Chico, which I live outside of, is the biggest town north of Sacramento, with around 100K people. Traveling through Chico takes a total of 15 minutes, and on either side there are cow pastures, orchards, and rolling hills, very easy to escape to. I live about 5 hours from the Pacific Ocean and 3? hours from ski resorts. It is really an ideal location.
Hope this doesn't sound too much like an ad, but it is really great here.

Nashua, N.H.-----96-2000---Perfect place in New england, Voted best city in America to live 3 years in a row and is consisitently in the top 5. 45min from Boston and 1-1/2hrs from the white mountains.
Naples,IT----2001-2002---Got sent there as a member of the reserves after 9/11..had a blast. Missed home but Italy is a whole different way of life. Beautiful
Rochester, N.H.---2002-to present....Really like it here, not quite as nice as Nashua but feels like home. We also toy with the idea of moving to a warmer area (AZ,NV, NM,FL etc) because we like to play golf and ride motorcycles but I really think we will live the rest of our days in N.H.
All these places mostly due to being in the Navy, have been all over the world and cherish the experiences and friends I made along the way.

I got to go to Cairo for short stay in 2002 (my girlfriend had work there for a few years). One of the most memorable places imaginable. Her company put us up at the Intercontinental overlooking the Nile and even hired an recent graduate in Egyptology to show us around Memphis and through the Cairo museum. Got to venture down into the depths of a small Pyramid near the big ones. One of her local coworkers took me out to see the "countryside" - goes on seemingly forever - thousands of adobe -like dwellings. Got to spend an afternoon at her boss's villa on the coast and swam in the Red Sea. How 'bout that traffic in the city? You could get rich selling car horns. One guy I talked to said he went through about 3 a year! Hope to go back some day - maybe get to Luxor this time.
How long in Savannah? Like it? Still might go to Augusta? Beautiful city.

6 years. I liked it, since it was the only place within 300 miles that was unlike the rest of the Deep South. Very progressive (for the south) and very weird! The weather sucks in the summer (too humid!), but it is nice in spring and winter!
Egypt was an eye-opener (or eye-sore you could say). I got to stay at all the 5 star hotels in Giza for awhile, but the other 6 months I lived in a tent in the desert (Yay Army!) I spent every day in town though, and really learned to hate traffic and pollution.
People complain that the US is such a polluter. I would say that Cairo pollutes more than the entire US! (Has anyone ever seen a dirtier river?)

Yeah, Savannah's a wierd place - like New Orleans in a lot of ways. Lots of ghosts - "Midnight in the Garden..." and all that. Stunning architecture in the older parts. The humidity there is even worse than Atlanta, and in the deep summer you can almost cut it with a knife here. Spring's nice but too short as is Autumn. Summer seems to last forever. Progressive's great, but the explosive growth of Atlanta in the last two decades has created a real mess - urban sprawl, millions of cars and a rapid transit system that's a joke. Too little too late. Pollution has become a critical problem in the last few years. Not quite up there with L.A., but it won't be long, unfortunately.
I agree that Cairo is pretty nasty and the pollution much worse than anything we see in the states (and that's really bad!). No controls (or cat converters) to speak of. I was amazed how there's virtually no traffic signs or lights and the cars just swirve in and out honking wildly the whole time. One local guy told me that the horn is the way a driver senses the position of the car in relation to other vehicles. And pedestrians just walk out into the street without thinking and the cars just go around them. One ride, I thought we were going hit at least six people. Only saw one "fender bender'" the whole time.

A lot of folks in the U.S. are thinking the same thing as regards going to Europe. I didn't get to travel there until I was in my forties, although I'd wanted to since my teens. Spent some wonderful time in Amsterdam. Love the Netherlandish art -especially that of the Northern Renaisasance and the later Baroque.

I was born in town of Cherepovets - it's Finno-Ugric word - Cherepoves - means "Pile of fish". This settlement was founded in 950-960 A.D., and in 1777, by the decret of Empress Katherine II was declared as a town-Cherepovets.
In 1997 I moved in Saint-Petersburg.

Wow, St. Petersburg. If there's one city I want to see in the World it would be St. Petersburg. Such rich history and social changes in such short spans have really given it a multi-faceted and rich culture in comparison to a lot of other shorter-existing American cities.
I've lived in Gravesend, Kent, England for my whole life. We have Gary Noonan (drum maker) and are known as the deathplace of Pocohontas. The theory is that she saw Gravesend and gave up hope. I feel the same, the place is horrendus. Only good thing are the plentiful transport links to get me out.

I'm a west coast girl:
Born in San Francisco ... truly left my heart there and am terribly homesick for it all the time
Moved to Barstow, CA when I was 8, for 15 mind-numbing, torturous years (if you've ever driven from LA to Vegas, you've gone through ... if you don't know it, it's in the middle of the Mojave Desert, with nothing to claim but a couple of military bases, a big railroad switching yard, a dry river, unbearable heat and humidity in the summer, and sand storms that'll take the paint right off your car).
Escaped to San Diego for 15 years (talk about feeling like paradise!) and lived in El Cajon, North Park and Pacific Beach.
Moved to Canada, to the wilds of British Columbia and lived outside of Clearwater for 9 years.
Wanted to go to New Mexico, Wisconsin or So Dakota when I left Canada, but the Seattle area was the farthest I could get with three howling cats in the back seat of my car. Have been here for 10 years, first in Bothell and now Everett.

No, it is completely voluntary. It is a good way to pay back school or get money to go to school (and give yourself time to figure out who you are before commiting yourself to the real world, heh).
It also pays a lot of people more money than they'd be worth in the private sector (sadly).

You're welcome, MFB, I'll show you the city with pleasure. But it'll take a week or two to see a half of historical places here in Saint-Pete. It needs 6 days to see all of Hermitage exhibits, if you'll look on each item for a 10 seconds....
Taipei, Taiwan
My girlfriend's job took her there for a great deal of last year (she's usually going back and forth from th U.S. and Kuala Lumpur, Maylasia). Didn't get to visit Taipei with her during that time but it looks like an interesting place. Tallest building (recently) in the world - 101. Think that hotel they're building in India's going to beat it. Was told the cost of living was extremely expensive in Taipei. Doesn't Mapex have their factory, there?
Max- I think I could spend a couple of weeks at the Hermitage alone! I recently watched a documentary about it's restoration a few years back. Quite a collection.
