OK people,
I am getting a new kit. I am a rock drummer. I play rock, blues, pop, and can funk out. I want opinions on what brand I should get, plys, heads etc.... I look to spend about 3K. I have Z cymbals, stands etc. We are talking drums only. I want a kick drum with NO tom mounts on it. Let me hear your opinions!

Gretsch kits are good for the money. 3K would probably get you a nice higher end Gretsch, but I don't know if you're willing to go used. That would make your cash go MUCH further.

3K, just for drums...
Tama Starclassic
Gretsch New Classic
Sonor S-Class
Mapex Saturn
PERSONALLY, I would go with either of these:
Pearl Masters MCX 7-Piece (http://drums-percussion.musiciansfriend.com/product/Pearl-Masters-Custom-MCX927SP-7Piece-Shell-Pack?sku=500393)
Gretsch Renown Purewood Oak 6-Piece (http://drums-percussion.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gretsch-Drums-Renown-Purewood-6Piece-Oak-Shell-Pack-?sku=583041)
Both with virgin kicks, and you'll have some cash left over for a higher-end snare, a cymbal or two, hardware etc.

Mapex Saturn or Orion, depeding if you want a Maple walnut or a straight Maple, amazing soundng kits, great quality, beautiful finishes, especially the new ones that debut at NAMM for the orion. Trust me I got a set of Saturns a year back and compared side to side with a Pearl Reference they sounded better. Annd there are enough sized you can get, so you can get to rockin'. Thats my 2 cents

Buy one of those real nice zildjian cymbal packs. That's like 900 dollars I think. You should buy a 1000 dollar set and then spend the rest on real nice congas and stuff like that. :)

I agree with R1200RT. I just bought the Gretsch Renown Purewood Oak and it sounds so good, I even let our guitarist play it just so I can listen to it from the other side of the kit!!!

In that range you pretty much have your pick of anything.
DW, Yamaha, Truth, Brady,Spaun you name it. Just a matter of how big a kit and what sizes you are looking for. I'd probably go maple or birch.
I'd also be checking e-bay and seeing what's out there, some killer deals to be had if you look.

3K to spend on shells alone, I'd probably go for those Tama Bubinga sets....those things have always made me drool, soundwise and finish.

Here are some pics of the new kit:
Mapex Saturn--outer 2 ply Birch, inner 4 ply Walnut, 8 coats hand rubbed lacquer, Zildjian A's (22" ride**classic**, 20" crash/ride**classic**, 20" rock crash, 20" medium crash, 14" new beats), DW 5000, Saturn Cym stands w/tom mounts, 2 Tama Cym stands, PDP Hi Hat stand (very strong and inexpensive), Yamaha snare stand, Tama 1st chair throne, and a Zil stick bag. Also, Zil hard Cym case and Humes & Berg "Drumseeker" cases. The Black Panther snare came with it's own case.

I have played several kits, from € 500 to 2500, and the biggest difference isn't sound, it's durability and options.
Whether it's a cheap or expensive kit, laminated shells sound similar. For a truly authentic sound you need to get solid shells. Otherwise, every mid-priced kit of around 1K will sound as good as one which costs double that. My preference goes to Sonor Force 3K because of its durability.
Save the money for cymbals and a solid snare, that's where quality is really audible.

my preference goes to the amazing custom drum manufacturers who make quality kits to any specification for a lower price than your average large corporation.

Toddy,
This is live Feb 14, 2010 outside in South Fla. Cold night here by our standards. The recording is....well....oh well. No apologies, just rock. Our first live performance with this band.

Thanks for the positive feedback. No site yet.....we are all working stiffs like most so time is precious and currently saved for rehearsals. We are committed to the long haul and making a great sounding band. We will be doing a professional recording DVD in the next 6 weeks for promos, bookings etc.

Hey Bobda,
The snare is #23 of 100 made. I have the certificate. It really is great!
When I got the kit there was NO SNARE included. At Rez Drums I had my choice of anything. I compared my Black Panther to the Ludwig BB and the DW Maple/Brass/Maple based on asking the General Manager, Daryl Bonebrake, "what would you get"? Mine cost the same as the Ludwig and the DW was about $350.00 more. The DW was as heavy a snare drum as I have ever picked up!! The sound was awesome. I may have gotten that but I kept in "all in the family" with Mapex because it was a collectors edition and it sounded as great as any other.

I think that you made the right choice on the Panther. Being that it is great sounding, looking, and 23 of 100 and all.
Mine is just the standard maple 13x5.5 with a black stain finish. The tuning range is excellent! The hardware and throw off is excellent!
The first time that I played it with my band everyone commented on the sound after only a few songs. Mine was a demo from a music store that I bought from eBay for a reasonable price.
It is the first Mapex drum that I have ever bought, It surely won't be the last!
Mapex makes wonderful drums!
