On of the biggest groove masters on earth !
He's laying the groove straight into the pocket.

Steve is the man! Definately one of the best if not the best funk drummers out there. He can put down some incredible grooves that just drip with feeling. I have always enjoyed listening to him. I am very glad Drummer World has a page devoted to him, he definately deserves it. One of my favorite pieces of work that he has done is the live "Briefcase Full of Blues" record by the Blues Brothers. A lot of people thought they were a joke, but that was one amazing band. Steve has some great grooves and awesome fills on this album. It is one if my favorite albums to play along with. Do you remember him as the original drummer on the "David Letterman Show"? I used stay up late back in high school just to see him play. Truly a master.

My kind of drummer. Solid time, great sonic choices and phrasing. Showy when he needs to be, but never over the top. And he just looks like he's having a blast.

One of the best around! His playing has a phenomenal feel and his groves are as tight as can be. The term "in the pocket" should have been coined for him.

I saw Steve last weekend in nottingham uk playing with Eric Clapton, he was solid all night some awesome fills and loads of diffrent styles of playing. There was an awesome section where it was just him playing this amazing grove for a while linking a few songs together. My kind of drummer though...you could watch him allday if he only had bass drum, high hat and snare...got an awesome 'feel' to his stuff just seems to flow.

Yeah it was well worth the 6 hour wait! I thought the show was awsome. The new band seemed confortable together, especially with the new members ( Doyle, Derek and steve Jordan). The highlights of the show were probably
'old love' with Robert Cray (who did a great first part) and 'i shot the sheriff' among other great ones. Chris Stainton and Tim Carmon were also amazing on the keys.
Steve Jordan had a nice new groove to 'cocaine' and 'after midnight' (the train goove) and i have to say it sounded weird at first but after getting used to it it fit perfectly. There is so much charizma and feeling in Jordan's playing he can makes a simple rock groove so much more interesting than it is.
Although i'm not a big Clapton fan, i can honnestly say it was one of the best concerts i've seen.
I'll post a link to the videos i took as soon as i put them together. I didnt video the whole thing but a lot of it is down.
Cheers

Check him out on the James Taylor Live DVD.
He plays bass too. A very versitle musician.
He's unbelieveable, for sure. I love the Scofield disk, and he makes the John Mayer trio worth sitting through...he's been amazing for years...the groove on "Take it So Hard" by Keith Richards is so great. Highly reccommend his DVD.

I don't think Steve has his own website but he works (and sessions - hey I made up a word) out of his own studio in New York. You may find some of the information you need by using the search function. For example there is a prior Steve Jordan thread at:

Yeah I just recently got John Mayer's "Continuum" and I've been hooked on the two tracks "Vultures" and "I Don't Trust Myself (With Loving You)." In all seriousness, by beat three of the first bar of "I Don't" my whole body is swaying to that sick groove Jordan lays down.
?uestlove aside, this man probably gets the best snare sounds out there today. Everything from raw and rockin' to fat and funky. What a joy.

Hey guys, I am so thrilled to say that I met Steve tonight. He was playing with Sonny Rollins in Vancouver at the Orpheum theatre and I had absolutely no idea that they were playing together until Sonny announced his name. I waited outside the stage door and sure enough there he was. He was even kind of enough to have a quick word with me and he gave me a nice handshake/hug. I only wish now that I had asked him for a signed stick or something, but maybe that would have been too much, you tell me! But the thing that was coolest tonight about Steve, other than meeting him was seeing that he is an incredible jazz drummer. I have only ever heard his recordings and seen his videos with his legendary 'grooves.' I have to say that I feel totally inspired to play now. Does anyone know if he has an email or a fanclub? I would LOVE to get in touch with him and thank him for his inspiration if it is at all possible.

Hey Sling,
I remember those days as well and did the exact same thing, I was more interested in watching Steve Jordan than anything else on the show. He really laid into the opening theme and I can't think of very many drummers who look like their having as much fun as him.

I have it. If you're looking for solid education, look elsewhere. The whole DVD is pretty much about Steve Jordan grooving away in different situations. There's some food for thought and inspiration available for those who have the ability to find it, but personally I can't recommend buying it.

Ok thanks. I was looking for inspiration more than the educational aspect of it. It sounds a bit like Bernard Purdie's Groove Master VHS which I had the opportunity to get. Honestly not that great educationally but you can't not get inspired while watching a master at work.

God = adjective for drummers like Vinnie
Favourite = adjective for Steve

KzSgDrummer
01-22-2008, 09:10 AM
Well put.
That's why Gadd is my favorite, although I think of Vinnie as being the only other one on the exact same level. There's just something about Steve and Steve that pulls you into their world, whereas with some others you're left watching in awe from the outside.
cantstandyourfunk
01-23-2008, 02:29 PM
Yeah, I totally understand what you mean, and whole-heartedly agree on that. Another great drummer, but often under-rated and mostly little-known (to people in general, not us drummers) is Matt Chamberlain. One of the grooviest and most versatile of modern-day drummers.
Vinnie...well, what can I say..he can equally pull you in and put you in awe within the same song, with a single touch. Think the hi-hat work on fairly simple song like The Hounds Of Winter, off Sting's Mercury Falling.
KzSgDrummer
01-24-2008, 08:28 PM
Yes, yes. I didn't mean to imply that Vinnie is someone who only does the "in awe from the outside" thing, just that he doesn't suck you in as much as Gadd or Jordan. Especially with Gadd, where oftentimes I feel like I'm swimming in the biggest ocean there is! But of course Vinnie is Vinnie, and he can do pretty much everything under the sun, including sucking you way down into the depths of his own gigantic sea.

Just checked out John Mayer's Continuum and John Scofield's tribute to Ray Charles - amazing stuff! His attention to detail (for example, snare drum sounds) to shape and colour the grooves in each tune stands out. Even live (as in the James Taylor DVD), you see Steve changing snare drums in between tunes - true art!

I love Steve Jordan. Got to see him play live at Crossroads. He's incredible. I love his 17" hi-hats. Totally ridiculous, but they sound amazing. I also recommend watching Herbie Hancock: Possibilities. There isn't a huge spotlight on him there but he lays down some really nice grooves on that documentary. And of course he's amazing with John Mayer Trio as well. Great groove. One of the best out there.
I haven't read the whole thread, but my band director at school was telling about this album not too long ago where the drummer lays down some crazy off-time grooves. He said that he lays down 5/4 and 7/4 grooves over 4/4 time signature throughout the song. Sounds kind of crazy. We looked it up and it's way hard to find we think but I think it was Steve Jordan on drums. Anyways I couldn't write it down at the time and now I forgot the name of the album and the band. Does it sound at all familiar to anyone?
Thanks

I love and own John Mayer's "Where the Light Is" album. Steve Jordan just shows how incredible he is, by just adding in those little things that make the song totally unique.
I have seen John Mayer 3 times live, but I have yet to see Steve Jordan play along side him live. I can't wait for that day to come though!
I also own Eric Clapton's "Crossroads" dvd and Steve Jordan ROCKS OUT on the songs he plays! Even when he's just doing the brushes for accent sounds to back up the other drummer, he's totally rocking out.

Steve is touring with John Mayer for the "Battle Studies Tour." I was fortunate enough to be Steve's guest at the show in Tampa last week. The show was a lesson in how important a great drummer is to a great sound and a great show. Steve was acting as musical director and every musician looked to him for every change. Even if you are not a John Mayer fan (and I am), go see this show. For any drummer who aspires to greatness, just watching what Steve can do, both musically and as a leader, is an incredible educational experience.

Got to see Steve live on Suday night with John Mayer. Cool show. He is awesome. They gave him a solo and he killed it. So cool to hear him build simple phrases within the groove. He has such a voice on the kit.
The girl next to me asked if he was blind. I laughed and went into a 3 minute Steve Jordan bio which left me looking, sounding, and feeling like a total drummer nerd. A label I would wear proudly. Its so funny how little people know about the music they are seeing.
On a side note, almost noone had any idea who Michael Franti was when he came up into the audience. It was kind of sad.

Saw Steve Jordan with John Mayer last night. It was my first time seeing Steve play live and he blew me away. The guy has some serious groove and feel. He got a short solo about halfway through the set.
You can tell that he is very well respected by everyone in the group. At one point John Mayer was explaining how he wrote Belief and that it is kinda behind the beat. He asked Steve if he knew what he meant and Steve just laughed and shrugged his shoulders haha.
His signature kit is veryyyy sexy by the way.
Michael Franti also went up in the stands at my show. I knew who he was due to some hippie friends I have. The teenage girls loved him when he was in the audience.

In the beginning of this clip there is an extract from a whole groove that he did. The whole video was on youtube, but I cannot seem to find it, I only saw it once and it only had like 100 views....ring any bells??

So, I love Steve Jordan's grooves for sure, but what the heck is up with his tuning/drum sound on the John Mayer Trio Live album? I almost can't stand to listen to it. I swear it sounds like he's playing a 10" steel piccolo snare and roto toms. Just awful sound to me. Any insight?

What a way to groove...the man plays for the song for sure!

I just recently got into Steve Jordan. Last night watched just about every video of his on youtube. This dude is so sick. When you look down into the depths of "the pocket", Steve Jordan's face will be there at the very bottom staring back at you with crazy eyes.

Yep. The guy sweats groove. Just try to listen to him play and NOT tap your feet....I believe the task is impossible.

I have it. If you're looking for solid education, look elsewhere. The whole DVD is pretty much about Steve Jordan grooving away in different situations. There's some food for thought and inspiration available for those who have the ability to find it, but personally I can't recommend buying it.
Man, I think you COMPLETELY missed the point of the DVD. But hey, that's just me and 46,789 other people.

Great groove. Just 2 cymbals and 4 piece setup. Does he use a 20 inch kick drum?

I'm not sure man! but it looks like a 20" BD. I was checking on his drumming gear and he also uses a long deep bass drum something like 16" x 18"...

There was a thread about this recently from memory. As I recall he "usually" uses a 24" but there were several pics around where he was behind a 20". And the "cannon kick" is 12" (diam) x 22" (depth) I believe.

I love how Steve can sit back and play the simplest of grooves for three minutes and, somehow, make it sound incredible..
It's inspiring, isn't it? Seeing him play with the John Mayer Trio always makes me feel like playing ... and especially to be playing with John M and Dino P :) A fantastic grooving three piece.

Here's one I didn't expect, John Mayer covering Bold As Love.
Two surprises ... one is that Steve, rather than playing his usual impeccable groove, he plays loosey goosey with lots of fills like Mitch.

He's played so many different styles with authenticity - never ceases to impress me.
The other surprise is JM's (unintentionally?) funny discourse on lurve :)

Yes Polly, impressive indeed, Steve's like a chameleon, he fits any mood, vibes, texture, feel, colour with such authenticity, he's up there with the greats, another virtuoso (hint, hint) within the world of drumming, I also liked the "false" ending of the song, a cliche it might be, but so well done here. :))
As for JM's speach about "lurve", cool, funny, but so true really...

After falling into a youtoob rat's nest, I ended up watching clips of Steve Jordan playing what is apparently some cymbals once owned by Elvin Jones. The cymbals sounded great ... Steve Jordan sounded greater.
I don't know what it is about him, but his groove is a mile wide ... and infectious as all get out. Like all the greats, makes it look so dang easy.
Like many in this thread, I watched much David Letterman to see him (back in the day). He can play anything and make it "happen" ... unreal.
All the big name drummers with big kits and bazillion BPMs .... forget it. Make it groove and make 'em not be able to sit still. Like Steve. That is what it is all about. ;-)
Peace and pocket,
radman
