I'm having trouble tuning my 14 x 5.5 Maple snare, and I was wondering what you guys were tuning your snares too.

I'm currently tuning my batter head (G2 Coated) to about 80-85, and my reso to 85-90.

Im not a drumming guru but, g2s are tom heads mainly. Look into genera dry or reverse dot since you use evans. Those are meant to be snare heads

I use g2's and g1's all the time on snares. they are the same as using a coated ambassador or coated emporer. the head isn't the problem.

I would crank the head up more, I like a low snare drum too but I crank my batter up to 90 and actually put my reso lower at 80 or 85. you usually tune a 2 ply head higher than a single ply head.

I have a G2 coated on my Vaughncraft Steambent snare with a Hazy 300 on the snare side.

None of my resos are that tight and none of my batters are that loose so resos under 85 DD and batters start from 85 DD. Since you already cranked your reso up to 90 I would start with a new reso. Never tried evans G2 as snare batter. The only double ply I use is evans genera HDD.

I've used all kinds of heads on my snares. I usually tune the batter to 88 - 90 and the reso around 80. This is a wide open rock tuning. Lots of body, volume, and projection.

I don't usually like two ply heads on a snare, I'm an Evans guy, but I use Ambassadors on my snares.

This is so aggravating. I'm not sure if it's the heads or maybe the snares are to loose/tight. Agh! I really want a Mapex MPX Birch, but if I can get a good sound out of my stock snare then i'll save my self $150.

Any suggestions?

just take your time. be patient .play with it try and find your own sound.using a tention tuner your robbing yourself of your diverseability

That's about what i use. Stares medium tight and I'm good to go.

What heads are you using? The dial readings are dependant on the thickness of the head. I use an Emperor 91 / Hazy ambassador 68 combo on my M Birch Snare

It's super rattly, but I'm not sure I can tighten the snares any more. I'm using a Genera G2 Coated. I just want a clean snare with some resonance but not ringing!

You may need to change your snare wires. I'm not sure if you're using the stock ones or not, but try some Pure Sound customs. You may also want to change your reso head to the previously suggested Evans Hazy 300. The current one may be stretched out too far by now, and seeing as how they're thinner they'll lose their tonality quicker.

Other than that, all I can say is tuning. I noticed you mentioned using a drum dial (or tension watch). Have you tried tuning to the pitch of each lug and getting all of those to match. I like DD when I'm switching heads, but when it comes to tuning, pitch tuning is the way to go. Start with the batter and get that to where you like it and then try and get the reso head as close in pitch to the batter. From there, adjust the reso head either higher or lower depending on how it sounds to you.

First time using a Drum Dial today. Tuned my snare to 80 on the reso, an Ambassodor and the batter to 85, a Genera Dry. I am very pleased with the sound. In fact I was impressed with how easy it was to use the DD. I tuned my three toms and snare in about 40 minutes. The biggest difference I noticed was with my 14 x 16 floor tom, it sounds much, much better now. The toms all sound in better harmony with each other now too.

would love to get one of these products; will check it out online. i tune all my drums to the resonant frequency of the shell, so this would be a huge time saver to get very close & then tune from there.
