Yeah, I have seen threads on this site about people making their own drum kits from Keller shells and then drilling all the holes and putting on lugs and whatnot...

...but I have never seen anyone make a DIY drum head...

...anyone like to share any stories?

...and what did you make them out of?

...what methods did you use?

I was wondering if duct tape would make a good drum head after seeing Mythbusters episode on the uses of duct tape. Duct tape looks tough, they used it make a cannon and a lightweight boat...not sure about its acoustic properties though.

I was thinking about if someone who lives quite some distance away from availability of drum heads (like my drum teacher used to be as he lived in the country) would make do with something they already can find.

The cost of a new top quality drum head makes a project like that seem moot. Unless of course you just wanna try it for the hell of it.

A big fan of Mythbusters but I'm not sure of the resonate or tonal qualities of tape that has thread in it. Seeing as some people use it to control overtones because of it muffling qualities, I can't see it working to well as a head. Leave the duct tape for repairing NASCAR bumpers.

That rubberband really sounded like a trumpet and the organ sounded kind of like a middle-eastern horn (notice the keys were organ pedals), the whole thing was awesome.

...okay...DIY heads aren't easy, and those balloons wouldn't be good for recording in a studio, best to leave people who know what their doing to make good drum heads.
