Hi guys i stumbled across this video of Ray Luzier's clinic in CA and was wondering if you guys could help with analyzing the hi-hat, ride, bell sequence of the beat. (The one that starts on 0:13)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkExPOuSkj4

is it like RLRLRL
RHBRSH?

The top part is right and left and for bottom R-ride bow, H-closed hihat, B-Bell

How can you play this with an odd beat opened hi-hat and kick thrown in?
Thanks alot, i really liked Ray's playing in this, can anyone recommend other drum techniques that are similiar? I want to be more familiar this this funk-metal style first, or i'd never even be close to more hard stuff like buddy rich's.

Going to Cupertino CA next year for college, can't wait, there are hardly any drum clinics here.

Do you have a link to the clinic in question?

edit: Is it this one?

He's just doing RLRLRLRLRLR, with his right hand alternating between ride bow, bell and hitting the snare for the backbeat. For some flavour, he moves his left hand to the splash or tom sometimes, or opens the hihat here and there, but it's constant RLRLRLRLRLRL all the way as far as I can tell.

Here's another version of it:

oh gosh sorry i forgot to link the video yes that's it!

so its just a normal 16beat with his double bass?

R L R L R L R L R L R L
H R H B S R H B H R S

Why is it that he plays such simple melodies yet have so much sounds. Plus the cymbal recording was awesome he can hit with power so many and they sizzle musically, unlike my only crash that goes too loud and noisy.

Thanks alot for the info, drummerworld rocks

There's no double bass in the groove itself, his left foot is operating the hihat pedal. He starts using double bass in the fills after a little while though.
