I went to see Jean-Luc Ponty in Austin, TX last friday night. I never heard of Damien Schmitt before but was very impressed with his playing, great soloist and a very expressive drummer. Baron Browne was playing bass and they were both rockin'.

If you get a chance to check out Damien, do it!

I started a thread on Damien Schmitt a while back. I think it got one response.

He is largely unknown outside France, but he is simply frightening!
If you put Jojo Mayer, Dennis Chambers and Dave Weckl in a blender and then add some steroid juice and Tabasco sauce, you'd get Damien. Check him out with a Swedish bass player called Hadrien Ferraud.

Yes he is definately worth checking out. He was playing Meinl cymbals and i was so impressed that i am seriously looking at Meinl, particularlly the "Byzance" line.

Again, he's one of my favourite newly discovered drummers. He's got insane chops, nice groove and musicality, with a touch of showmanship, happiness and pinch AD/HD. An inspiration!

Thanks for the links. I didn't see him on Meinl's website. Any idea what his cymbal lineup is?
