Hey there,
I was wondering what do you guys think about the Ddrum Diaton (not the Diode)?
I just came by a deal I thought I couldn't pass by. I think I just had to get it. The kit configs was exactly what I was searching for. I was looking to buy the Dios STN kit. Anyways, the deal is still currently on eBay (guy had several kits). 699 USD for the pocket kit ;

20 x 20 kick drum
12 x 8 rack tom
14 x 12 floor tom
16 x 12 floor tom
13 x 7 snare drum
tube lugs, 9mm acrylic shells

I figured out that since the Diaton series used Kirchhoff Schlagwerk seamless acrylic shells, unlike the previous Diode series that used welded shells, this kit would sound huge for it's price. I wasn't a big fan of acrylic shells until one of my friend bought a Spaun acrylic set, and I though it sounded so good, that I had to get something similar. Altough, I'm not sure but I think Spaun uses RCI welded shells.

Please tell me your though about my recent good/bad buy!
Thanks

I don't know much about acryllic sets, but is that of equal quality of some that I have seen that cost twice as much if not more? Say Ludwig.

Edit: Well the dude has 6 coke bottle and 6 amber color for that price. Says price drop but not by how much. Have you heard these drums?? They look good and small compact sizes. 20, 10,12, 14 16 and a snare.

He had 4 clear kits too and those all sold in one day. This is a smokin hot deal. they were originally selling for $2100 and the lowest I EVER saw one was for $1200 used. $699 +$40 shipping? You cannot beat that dude. I would grab one for myself if I had the cash to spend right now. I did all the research I could on the Diaton series online and there really just isn't much out there. However, if you search youtube for Kirchhoff Schlagwerk there are several videos with his shells being played .. just not with ddrum hardware. Should not make a difference in sound though. They sound pretty badarse in the videos. I say go for it before they are GONE!!!

I say play one first............in my opinion the cheaper end ddrum kits may look great but in my opinion sound pretty awful.........I had a ddrum Ash Pocket kit for like a week and no matter what heads I tried etc it sounded awful........

they look great, but expect what oyu pay for is what you get if that makes sense

Originally they were 899$ but then dropped to 699$.
The guy said it was a clearance sale from a distribution company called Nord.

Anyways, I think there should be a huge difference between a low-mid priced Ash kit and this. These are more in the upper range Dios prices, about 2200$ retail. The fact of this bargain is that it's really a great deal, IMO.

As I said have a go on them, but it's a hard cal because the heads on the ddrum kits I've tried are beyond toilet...........you'll be changing them as soon as setting them up.

Depends on your budget, $699 Drum kit isn't going to sound too great to me.

But depends if your just starting out or not been playing long then it's a good start.

It amazes me how some people relate price to quality. I've been playing drums since 1976 and in that 34 years, I have seen countless drummers behind $5000 DW kits that sounded terrible for the simple fact that they didn't know how to tune them. Don't get me wrong, I love DW's but if they aren't tuned correctly, they can sound no better than the $200 First Act drum set you'd find at your local Super Target. The best turd polishing technique in drumming is the ability to tune.

In regard to your question, I got an amber set of the Diatons from that same guy on ebay who is mentioned ealier in this thread.

I LOVE these drums. They are very nice quality and, with the right heads (and tuning) they sound wonderful. As expected, the stock heads are the worst and need to be replaced before you play the first note.

Get the following heads and you are all good...

Snare = Evans Genera HD Dry...Res side OK
Toms = Evans EC2 Coated... Res side OK
Bass Drum = Evans EMAD 2 (with the fat foam hoop) No muffling needed inside.
Res side OK --- needs a mic hole.

The deal? $699 for a kit that has a $2K+ MSRP. Let's not kid ourselves... it was an awesome deal!

That's it!
These drums sound great with the right heads.

I've put EC2 batter on all toms
Powercenter on snare
And EMAD1 on bassdrum.
I've kept the stock reso and went with a 4" Olz on the bassdrum reso.

The kick is amazing.

My only tiny disapointment comes with the hardware. Tube lugs are really hard to be drilled perfectly. Some of the lugs are a tiny tiny off which leads to harder rod entry.
Also, I had to tighten all the lugs from the inside after a week because 2 of them had fell loose.

After those real small efforts, these drums a huge for the price!!!
I'll post some live pics soon.

So it turns out that I just bought one of these drum sets that were being sold on eBay back in late 2009.... on Craigslist.

The guy I bought them from said he bought them "three months ago" on eBay from a "dealer in Florida".

I paid $900 cash for my DDrum Diaton 5-piece Coke Bottle Pocket kit. Apparently the kits were brand new when they were being sold on eBay. The guy had already replaced all the heads so I thought I got a slamming deal.

I went by the guys house last night just to listen to it and play it and ended up buying it on the spot. The set absolutely sings.

One thing I'll need to tweak is the snare, I need to find the right tuning to get a little more attack... does anyone else have the same experience with their DDrum Diaton snare?

I've put on a set of Puresound Blaster wires and a Evans Powercenter cranked-up really high. Can't get much more pop than this!

I almost bought the same kit before building my own acrylic kit. The reason your lugs are slightly offset is because of inacurate drilling. The guy selling these told me they were cheap due to slight blems. Maybe he was refering to the lug allignment. As far as the snare drum goes, i've never heard a Ddrum snare i liked. Overall, that price is a steel.
