View Full Version : What does your kit say about you?

Inspired by Aydee when I posted my kit on DW. What does your kit say about you? Is your setup more than just suitable for the genre? Do the drums, finishes, sounds, cymbal choices reflect your character. Usually, the kit we play isn't our ideal ideal setup due to financial constraints, yet still I believe our choices say a lot about us, or at least, how we'd like to be perceived.

Well, my setup is clean and efficient, while my playing not always is. My drums look pretty plain, but they sound awesome. Maybe I look pretty plain but sound awesome too, I don't know. Thats what I get out of it.. Oh, and I'm a cymbal and hardware mixer.

What does your kit say about you?
Interesting topic KIS, my band mates used to discuss what our instruments said about us......the general concenus was that as my kit seemed to get smaller and smaller over the years, it must be a reflection that I am a lazy bugger at heart!!
Any guesses as to the Freudian comments passed when one of the guitarists went from a Fender amp to a 2 box Marshall stack???

I do not have a specific set up. It depends on the music and parts I have to play. I have a large collection of drums and cymbals as well as sound effects. If I need a magpie call, I have the device. :-)
I tend to hang out in kitchenware, guns and hardware stores looking for new and interesting sounds. I got some funny comments the day I went through all the metal buckets in a hardware store looking for the one. Happily I found it. I also have a great metal ashtray!

My kit, quite frankly, every piece of it, hand selected. It is what I want. I've always liked the "natural" wood look. Charlie Watts 57 Gretsch/John Bonhams Thermogloss Luddy's. And I love the patina that age can give, to a clear maple finish. So my Rogers XP8 kit, perfect. Add to a basic 5 piece a 26x14 kick, and an 18x16 floor. All the drums I need. Then there's the "dark side". The e-lectronic side of me. My SPD-S and Electro-Harmonix loop station. And my "vintage" Tama Techstar 305. Again, every piece I choose, with a definite function/purpose. Add to this mix, 2 sets of cymbals. One set....all Paiste Red ColorSound 5's. The other set...all handmade Turkish cymbals (meaning no Zildjian/Sabians). I look at the drum kit as 4 basic voices. Kick, snare, ride, and hats. Change 1, or 2 of those voices, and you basically have a whole new kit. That's why I have 2 kicks, the 22x14, and the 26x14. And 4 snares. And why I have 2 complete sets of cymbals. It's a minimum number of pieces owned, for maximum sound potential. As far as what this all "says about me".......is I'm taking a path less travelled.

If I were a car, I'd be a ragged out Model T. Ok, just kidding. My drums, Yikes! Ok, an old, old, Vintage, Pearl kit. I've had the thing since 1972 but bought all new hardware and cymbals. Paiste PST 5s. Mid range. And new heads. I really, really want a brand new kit, maybe Gretsch, or Tama, or even...Ludwig. But I also like to eat, so maybe someday....

I like this exercise! Let's see...
My vintage Ludwig kit is like me in that it's being used to play music nowadays, but with a strong influence from the sound of the past.
I guess my DW kit says that when I know exactly what I'm looking for, I'll go all in to chase after it...

well it says i have big unmentionables because the hats are in the middle and I play open handed(thing about it guys, strap a pair of ballons to your front and try to cross your arms)
it says that I am totally wierd because although it has normal right hand lead toms, i have recently found out that i am left footed so the bass is on the left(thank the lord for remote high hats)
and to me it says that I love playing, because when I sit down i always say 'hello my beauties" and get a big rush out of having this great kit to hit.

My kit says," You look like you are having fun, but man you need practice with those singles." So I just give it a harder kick. I waited 30 plus years to play again and I do have fun.

My kit is very small - 16" kick (RT), snare (Premier), 12" shallow single-headed tom (RT) and a djembe. Cymbals are hats, crash/ride and splash.
It's been put together specifically for my current band.
Like Pocket, my kit says I'm lazy. It also says that while I'm not a star drummer, I have a quirky approach.

The sounds of my drums definatley suggest Rock and the setup would confirm this. I've got 4 toms 2 snares three crashes and a china. The apperance of my drum set probibly would make me seem like an emo kid. On the shells of my kit I put painters tape with different parts from songs I like. Some them are "It's hard to pick which ones to hate the most" from The Beautiful People, "Drifting bodies, it's soul exertion" from Would?, and "I speak in verses, prophecies and curses" from Buried Alive by Otep.
My kits say I that I have a fondness for old school styles. Which is true beyond drumming as well. In addition to white marine pearl or vintage sky blue pearl, I like my '68 Firebird and the look and feel of an old Gibson hollow body guitar.
I like simple aesthetics so it's one of the reasons I scrubbed the logos off the top of my cymbals. I used my old manual Nikons many years after my other photo colleagues bought electronic cameras.
My setups also show that I am very deliberate by nature.
My cymbal choices reflect this the most. I never rushed out and bought a bunch of cymbals. I've gone back to listen to over and over again. My selection of As and Ks shows that I make specific choices.
Lastly that I'm not overly indulgent. Money wise, I could have chosen almost any kit I want and I am satisfied with my inexpensive intermediate level drums. I haven't found cause to justify a full set of Craviottos yet. I have a small collection of snares compared to some of you guys here. A brass 14x6½, a bronze 14x5½, a maple 14x5, a maple 13x7, a maple 10x6 and a mahogany 14x5. I can get it all done with those.

They say that my kits are always clean. I get comments on how organized I am. I get comments about how fast I set up and am ready to play. They say that they like both the look and sound of my drums.
Fellow drummers that play my kits at shared gigs comment on how well that my drums are tuned. They like my quality cymbals.
One drummer said to me once, "Were you in the military?" I answered "How did you know!"
He said that you're drums are kept so perfect! I could tell that you are from a military background.
I told him that I keep my kits "War Ready" at all times. Just like my rifle!

Well the finish doesn't say much more about me than "This was the nicest finish among the 3 that left". For the style I play which is sort of Funk/Rock I have to admit I might have a couple of extra things, but when it comes to play some other stuff those extra things become very important so I'm happy with myself knowing that eventually I make a proper use of everything!

I guess it says that I am spoilt. Even though my kit is a very popular finish on this forum, I dont like it. I prefer the ( ..ahem.. ) natural blondes.
However, being the deep & sensitive person that I am, I look for substance over surface beauty. I was so keen to buy a beautiful sounding Gretsch Renown I'd played, but then I said the heck with rationality, I'll reach for the stars and get a Yamaha MCAN. Havent regretted it at all. Its the most beautiful sounded kit I've heard. Anywhere. Maybe Carlok's Oakies sounded better, but thats ok..
So, I guess it says I'm happy.. I hate my rack and cymbal hardware which also says that I always look for something to be unhappy about.

Depends,
The set I have in my garage is a 9-10 piece dual bass drum with double AND single bass pedals, all of my kit is used, I've jumped up to 7 cymbals, have custom fabricated/welded/finished mounts and hardware, my cymbals range from late 1920's-30 Zildjians to newer Sabians, to a cheap CB cymbal re-fabricated into a pretty good sounding sizzle, to what might just be the biggest and most frankenstein'ed kit in Butte County.
However, I do cut the size of the kit down (to 6 pieces) for gigs, (my truck is small!) and rotate different cymbals and stuff for each gig.
What it all says about me? (judging between the two)
Seasoned drummer,
Cheapskate,
Experimenter,
Looney tunes,
Innovator,
Open-minded,
A guy who likes his drumset to match both his Harleys, (literally--black and chrome)
Sense of timing and finesse, (sound- NOT looks!)
Semi-Professional musician-- BUT keeps to his roots,
An OBVIOUS Music Addict,
The one your mother warned you about!
Yep, the shells may be a bit dusty, but the heads and cymbals aren't! AND:
If you don't like my drumming, that's OK- I wail on harmonica Like Eddie Van Halen does on guitar!
Hope that sums it up,
C. P.

lol - my crew are an electric band, just very low wattage, around the evel of an AA battery in most songs :)

I love that sweet little kick drum. Looks beautifully made and sits so well with the rest of the kit. It says a lot about you. Minimalistic but oozing presence. Agreed on the tumble dryer thing though. I know your band runs on AA's, but I'd be tempted to let it breathe to give it sustain and go for a wool covered cork beater to keep the volume in check. Just a suggestion.

My kit says "somebody elses".
I bought the kit second hand and it still has the other guy's new heads on it. The Black/Silver finish isn't really me. But the 1 up 2 down layout is just what I wanted and the kick drum sounds PERFECT. Only 4 cymbals (Hats, Crash, Ride) which is totally me because I don't want alot of unnessisary effects and crap (although I'm gonna add a crash and replace current crash and hats to with Zildjian Armands and Ks). So overall I'm real happy.

I prefer a simple and clean set-up. What I use is picked precisely and redundant gear is left out. I do like variety and don't mind extra gear. It just doesn't need to be set-up all at once.

Interesting topic. I change my set-up constantly for no good reason. I usually stick to my 5 piece sonor s-class set, but add and subtract cymbals, timbales, electric drums. I'll even lug around my own mixing board and powered PA cabinet, so I can run my own sound and my own monitor.
For some reason I always think there is a better way to do things, and can't settle on one set-up. Unfortunately this is exactly how I operate in other area's of life also. I used to be a pretty good golfer, but I got myself so mentally tied in knots that I couldn't play at all.
Right now I'm just using a four piece and a couple of cymbals and really digging it, so I'm going to stick with it.......at least until next time I play.

My kit says a few things:
1. Once I know what I want, not even time or money will stop me from getting it. Also that I'm extremely blessed with luck.
2. I appreciate quiet elegance far more than shiny glitz and glam. In all things in life ;)
3. I'm well rounded in most aspects, but never really try to focus/master (or indulge) in any one facet too much.
4. I just bought a djembe and probably will buy something new once every few months. That says that while I like to explore a bit, I always come back home to what I know and love.

My last two kits were both sparkle finishes, so with the finish I am guessing that I like to stand out visually.
I have them tuned like vintage drums, I try to get the natural shell sound. So that says I have an old fasion streak.
My cymbals are all big. 19" and 20" crashes. I picked them because they cut through better and I hate when cymbals are lost in a mix. So that shows I am selfish and want things my way.
My tom sizes are standard 12", 14" and 16" but my Snare is 7" deep and I play a 26" kick.
So I think that the toms show I want to please everyone around me, but with the larger snare and kick I still want my own signature sound.

All I can think is, based on responses I get, I must be tall.
People always comment my drums are so high, but really, they're not, they are just set up for a 6'2" drummer.
Also that I take my drums seriously, as they are nice, and always look in good shape.

There are a few old-style sparkle four-piece kits here - they are all gorgeous! When I was young I didn't like them but these days I find there's an aura about those kits that I really like. Stan and Nick, those Peace kits look pretty shmick too.
Polly, how do you play the djembe? hand, hands, sticks.. all of the above.. curious how you incorporate it the the rest of the furniture..?
Aydee, all of the above - mostly hands, but occasionally brushes and sticks. When you have s small kit (or wardrobe) it helps to accessorise. I also have a mini tambourine which in some songs I toss over the hats' spike.
I see you have keys next to your kit. Do you play along with sequences?
Dairyman, actually I'm almost 5'9" and can look at lot of guys in the eye. I just like my kit set up low. Maybe I'm compensating for my unmentionables like Granny but I never thought about it. Not all men look me in the eye so that could be it.
KIS, yup, the kick is super-cute and I don't put the towel in any more but keep the foam block from the factory in it. Being a 16", the "boom" isn't all that impressive so a bit of dampening probably doesn't hurt.
One disadvantage is that it sits off the ground entirely with four legs, and getting all four legs even without memorilock is always fiddly and time-consuming when setting up. There's also a fitting for the kick pedal to latch on to. If I had a roadie or personal slave I'd prefer an 18" or 20" kick.

Interesting twist BP. The first pic tells me you're completely in love with your kit hence surrounding it with all that natural beauty. I think you're a confident person & player. You're a big hitter when necessary but keep most of the power in reserve, most of the time. You like a big straight sound but also appreciate tonal range. You don't like things too fussy. The fact that you switch setup's indicates you like to play a number of styles but it could also indicate you're unsettled as a player. I doubt it though, as the other evidence says confidence to me. You like organic things that are honestly presented. Bet I'm way off!

I would guess it would say that I adapt to what I'm given.
I'm always thinking about what I'm going to bring to the gig based on what type of room I'll be in along with what type of music I'll be playing. For instance, I played a gig last night where it was straight ahead rock tunes in a medium sized venue with a large(great) PA. So I decided to bring a birch Premier kit(Genistas) and I only brought a 4 piece set up. I knew they'd carry well and the mics would do the job.I brought dark, big cutting cymbals. Mainly I vary snares....to this gig I brought a maple 13X6.5, I dunno, I'm always thinking that way. Which kit, how many pieces, and which snare.....

In don't put a lot of importance on my kit as much as the sounds and feeling I try and emote from the kit. I am a stickler for sound, but it's all secondary, deferring to the total effect of the rhythm I want to project. It's not the messenger (the drums) it's the message that is where the artistic statement lies. I tend to overlook the superficial and instead focus on the real puropse of the the drummers work, to get people dancing and grooving.
I want to see the forest (the rhythmic message) without focusing on the trees.(the drums themselves) The Big Picture (IMO) doesn't include drum sizes, heads, configurations, brands but rather the purpose the drums serve. But I still play DW's cause I can afford them and prefer the sound ha ha.
If you can't do your job effectively with a kick, snare, hi hat, ride and crash, more drums won't solve that conundrum. They are enticing detours that use up precious energy, detracting from what's really important, the role of the drumset and the power we have at our disposal to affect peoples moods. But the gear itself is almost negligible in the grand scheme of things.

I think you're actually pretty close! I am more confident a player than a person and not as in love with my kit as I used to be (but like any relationship my relationship with my kit has its ups and downs). The switching setups may be for both reasons - I am not very diverse but like playing rock of all kinds, from light to heavy, from simple to progressive. And funk.
Other than that, you're right.

We're not so different, you and I...
You are organised, you like having many sounds to choose from but do want to keep things nice and tidy. You prefer luxury and ease-of-use over low costs and like to have some exclusive products. Like me, you are a fan of natural beauty and in love with your kit, and a confident player an probably a confident person as well. Am I in the right direction?

Almost 100% BP. I have no desire to own exclusive products though. It just works out that way sometimes. I look for a specific sound or function and buy whatever it takes to achieve that goal. I like to have a lot of textures & flavours available to me but in a compact package. I don't go for brands, I go for fit & function. If it sounds great, then I'll use it. I have a little B8 splash on my kit that I wouldn't do without. It's cheap but makes the exact sound I'm looking for. I could go and buy a £150 top end splash and it wouldn't do the same job, so why bother. My closed hats are nearly 30 years old. They're from the very first production of Sabian HH. They look like S&^$T but sound better than any modern version. I could go on & on. There's a reason for every piece on my kit. Vanity never comes into it.

Hahaha Aydee, you're a "good egg"! My 8" B8 splash sits really well in contrast to the other effect cymbals. It's really musical & bright with a little bell tone behind the attack. I've had it a long time & it works for me. I don't care that it's cheap or the poor relation. The 10" B8 splash is crap BTW. Back to the thread, what does that bit of kit say about me? It says I don't give a s&^%t. As for role model, I don't think so. You have great chops, groove, feel, etc. Why would you possibly consider a has been simple rock drummer as anything to look up to (& that's not fishing for compliments, that's how it is!).

And KIS, personally I find big racks intrude a bit on a drumkit's look but they're practical. You have the coolest looking bunch of cymbals I think I've ever seen on a kit! Amazing. Gruntersdad likes racks allegedly LOL. Agreed, my kit suffers from hardware overload. Too much chrome & fiddly bits but it saves me a ton of time on setup and reduces the stage footprint by about 2 feet compared to stands.
The crash with holes in sounds like a bright thin crash but with china undertones. Very cutting. The little segmented thing mounted on my closed hats is called a chopper( down girl, down). I suppose it's a modern interpretation of a tambourine but a lot more percussive. Gives a white noise style chick chick sound. Very short.

Here is a kit I used for some funk cover band shows. I think it shows that for this show I was mostly concerned with groove. All my cymbals can be ridden. I have no crashes set up. 2 rides for when I need different texture and a swish for the same reason. I also have a gong because one tune began that way.
I have 2 13" snares. One deeper for slower tunes, the other shallower for more upbeat numbers. And I am using smaller toms and a 20" kick. I am not planning on playing any huge rolls around the kit. The fills will be to the point. What is important is that the band grooves and it is my job to make that happen. My ego is well and truly out of the picture.

Here is another "kit" for a different purpose. This is for a percussion gig with a rock covers band. Because of the volume I am using things like the chochalo, fiberglass chekere, huge triangle (seen hanging to left of table) and bells. Plus of course the congas.
