View Full Version : Appeal for Leo, our drummer friend in Cuba.

Ok guys & galls, we've probably read the thread posted by our member Leo in the "Your Gear" section. If you haven't yet, then please do. I've put it back at the top of the list to lift the profile. Once you've read the thread you'll be in no doubt about Leo's dedication to his craft and his impressive efforts to make his own gear out of whatever he can find. He's posted some of his playing as well & this guy's not messing around.

After a few weeks of trying to find reliable ways of getting some gear to Leo, we've finally come up with a plan. Air shipment from NA is probably the most reliable standard method. I've had my Canadian business contacts look into this for me and I can tell you, it's not easy. A 2' x 2' x 2' box would cost $400 + documentation fees (release documents (embargo), importation docs, agency fees, etc, etc) of over $300. We've had a break through. Leo has a friend who is travelling from Canada to Cuba at the start of December. I've had conversations with him and he can take a limited amount of gear directly to Leo. My business contacts (& ultimately my main employer) are based in Richmond Hill, Ontario. This is a very convenient location for Leo's friend to pick up from. Novaflex (my contact) have kindly agreed to act as a consolidation point. I think this is the most reliable arrangement we can make right now. Leo can testify to his friend's trustworthyness and I can do the same for Novaflex.

Leo's friend can only carry a certain amount. With that in mind, we're appealing for specific things;

1/ a quality double pedal. This is Leo's dream.
2/ a small selection (say 3 or 4) good quality cymbals suitable for heavy rock.
3/ a cymbal bag.

Although it would be great to arrange other stuff as well, it's really not possible on this occasion.

So this is what I want from you guys. We either want gear donations as above or more members could contribute by sending money. Money's more arkward because we'd then need to nominate someone in Canada to receive the money & go buy the gear then deliver it to Novaflex in Richmond Hill, Ontario. As time is short, we need to make this happen quickly.

Let's discuss whatever idea's, help, gear, donations you can contribute on this thread. We'll then use this thread to finally decide who's sending / doing what and take it from there. Please don't send anything until we've sorted the logistics out. Once we've decided exactly what we're doing, I'll post the relevant contact details and instructions. I've looked into sending gear donations from members in Europe & beyond. It's not really an economical proposition, so a money donation option would be great if we can find someone happy to accept donations (method to be decided by volunteer) & get gear on behalf of the DW members. We can do a 50/50 arrangement as well. I need ideas & volunteers guys, but quick.

Thanks & fondest regards to all, KIS (Andy)

I'll kick off with an offer of $200 CAN if we can arrange a money receiving point & buyer in Canada.

Probably a good idea for a money transfer is to use paypal, as much as i hate them. If we could get 20 people to donate £10 then that would be enough to get a nice quality double pedal.

More than happy to donate some funds for our hard rocking amigo, can probably muster 30 quid or 50 CAD so let me know when/where to send it (via paypal will be best option as previously mentioned).

Also since sticks and heads are probably quite hard to get in cuba, would they be able to get that sort of stuff? That wont weigh loads anyway... All we'd need is Leo's drum sizes.

I'll donate $50 if I know where to donate.

BTW - in my sig I have a link to another drummer in need. Please check it out.

Hey Crew,

I just stumbled on this thread. I dunno if I can contribute anything, but will if I can.

I have to say something here-- what a GREAT group of folks we have on here--dedicated, caring, and getting involved in a selfless manner.

I am SO proud to be a part of this website community, and honored to associate with such great people.

Cheers to all, and all the best to you, Leo.

Thanks to those who've responded to date but we need more help. We especially need someone based in Canada to accept donations then go & buy some stuff on our behalf. The consolidation & pickup point is confirmed, the guy to take the stuff to Leo is confirmed, we just need this last link in the chain and the generous support of some more members. A lot of members offered assistance on the original thread about Leo's drums, we now need those same guys to post here so we can get things underway. Time is short. We need to get moving to ensure we can get the stuff together in time for Leo's friend to pick it up from Novaflex in Richmond Hill, Ontario. I'd do it all from here but it's just not feasible. Regards to all, KIS.

I apologize for mentioning this on someone else's thread, but I've been trying to get drummers to help out a fellow drummer, Gerry Gibbs, for weeks now. Please while you're in the giving mood, please have a look a this website and help a drummer in need: http://www.helpgerrygibbs.com

Here's me offering...

I'm in Toronto, could quite possibly be that guy you need. I will be leaving the country as of Christmas until the beginning of February, but if things can be worked around that timeline, I'm in and available to assist.

My internet access is somewhat limited at the moment, Andy, I can be reached best at the email address in my profile if you'd like to discuss further.

Great!!!! Glad you're around and in the right location too. Timeline's no problem because Leo's friend is leaving for Cuba first or second week December. Would you be happy to receive payments to your account by Paypal? Also cheques, etc, etc? We would then ask you to go buy some stuff and arrange delivery to our consolidation point in Richmond hill. It's a bit of work on your behalf but for a great cause. I'll try to mail you via your suggested method but I also want to conduct the whole thing on this page in the forum. It's important for members to see what's going on and for efforts to be coordinated. Thanks for stepping up. As time is short, please consider the questions I've asked and get back on this page ASAP. It will mean you releasing details of your account number & sort code or setting up an account specifically for this project. I assure you I'd be happy to do this myself but there's the slight problem of 3,500 miles. Thanks again, KIS.

I can do these things. I’m not able to contribute on a financial level, (aside from covering costs of getting myself around and dropping things off), so it’s a way I feel I can help out a brother in need with the resources I have. I do however have a whack load of used 14” Coated Ambassadors I can donate if they are needed, maybe this is why I’ve been saving them?

I wonder if any of the folks here work at any of the shops here in Toronto that could assist with pricing or availability, and if any of these stores would be interested in offering a discount to the cause (even a staff discount would be awesome...). Anyone work at L&M’s, Steve’s, Just Drums, etc...? I wonder if Dakota and Cakco Drums would be able to donate some gear maybe?

Also wondering if anyone has investigated potential taxes or duties that Leo's contact may face at customs?

jer, that's great. Acting as the receiving point & arranging gear is a huge contribution on it's own. Both I, & all DW contributors are very grateful. Anyone who wishes to send gear (along the lines of the list in the first post) can send it directly to Novaflex in Richmond Hill (I'll supply the full address once everything is agreed). It's the receiving of donations, buying the stuff with those donations & getting them to Novaflex that we need you for.

As for duties, etc. We looked into this in great detail. Frankly, it's a minefield, especially at the Cuban end of things. Leo's friend has brought stuff for musicians into Cuba previously without problems apparently. Leo has nominated him and obviously has trust in him. I've communicated with Leo's friend myself & he seems genuine. Is there a risk that the stuff could be seized, impounded or similar? I think that's distinctly possible but I'm assured this hasn't happened to date. Frankly, it's the best route we've got. This is the main reason why we can't give too much bulky stuff because it's going into personal luggage.

Anyhow jer, would you kindly set up a Paypal account as soon as possible then post the info necessary for the members to make donations on this page. We've only got a short time to get this moving. As I promised, I'll start the fund with $200 Can. Once you've posted the Paypal details, I'll do everything I can to raise the profile. Thanks again jer, you're a true DW friend. KIS.

My PayPal is setup for the address listed in my profile... donations can go there. I guess in the spirit of open-ness, if you are sending funds, maybe in addition to sending me the link to collect, someone could act as a "treasurer" and get an email with the details of who sent how much - along with myself, a second person to keep track of the flow, to keep things on the up and up. I can in turn report back to this thread with purchases and amounts. I will take pics and provide receipts.

Aside from determining Leo's needs, have specific products been discussed?

Superb jer. Could you do me (and the other out of date guys on this forum) a favour, please post an idiots guide to donating via your address. Making things as simple as possible is the way to go. I'm happy to act as treasurer unless someone else wants to put themselves forward. Also, if someone here knows how to put a link from this page to Leo's "my drums are old but I'm proud" thread, I'd appreciate that. Thanks, KIS.

Ok guys, this is what to do:

For donations, please go to Jer's page to get his email address under "contacts"

http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/member.php?u=21659

Use Jer's email address to send your donation to the appeal via Paypal.

I've just sent $200 Can to kick off the fund and it seems to work just fine.

For donation of gear, please post details here first so we can see if it's what's needed (this is because we're very limited on how much we can send). Ultimately, we're after;

3 or 4 quality cymbals suitable for a heavy rock player.
A cymbal bag.
A quality double kick pedal (Leo's #1 dream).

Once your kind offer of a gear donation is accepted (please don't take that the wrong way), send your gear donation addressed exactly as follows to:

Attn: Melinda Donnelly / appeal for Leo.
Flexmaster Canada Limited.
20, East Pearce Street.
Unit #1
Richmond Hill
Ontario L4B 1B7
Canada.

Time is short as Leo's friend travels to Cuba first or second week December. There's a lot to do before then. We'll need donations in at least 7/10 days before the travel date (I'll confirm as soon as possible) to allow for purchaces, delivery, consolidation & collection of the gear.

Please give what you can as soon as you can. Even the smallest donation with make a big difference. If you've got no Idea what we're going on about, please visit Leo's thread and you'll see why we want to make things happen for him. http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8061
Fondest regards to all, KIS.

Got your email KIS, can confirm it was for $200 Canadian dollars.

As with any cash donations received by me, I'll post here when I get them. Just a head's up if you are sending money, I'll reply to the incoming email to it you know that I've got it, I'm not necessarily on the internet everyday (although for the most part I am), if you don't hear back from me right away, I'll be along shortly.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling KIS!

Told you that you could do it mate!

I'll donate as soon as i can. Unforturnately i'm between bank accounts at the minute (charging me £15 for not having some money in my bank that you can take out of my dad's account quickly enough but not give it to me for more than 9 days? No thanks halifax) but once i get that sorted i'll give out a nice donation. I would donate some of my drum gear but i wouldn't be able to afford the shipping unforturnately. Besides i think even with $200 you could probably get something better than my crappy old DW5000.

As I said above, I'd be happy to send a cymbal bag. It's a Zildjian. I've had it for a couple of years, but it's never been used. I could toss some misc. repair parts in the pocket as well, like bass pedal spring assembly and some small spare parts (lugs, wing nuts, felts etc).

I just added $100 USD to the fund.

Unless you get double the donations we have now, I think it'll be unfeasable to get both a *good* double bass pedal (I mean like Pearl Eliminator quality, not SP quality) and a pack of cymbals (which we haven't decided on yet.) I recommend a set of Paiste PST5s by the way :D

Hi guys, sorry I've been out of the loop for the last few days but my mother has just suffered a massive stroke. I've been at her bedside 24/7. Let's let this run for another day or so then we'll have to wrap it up to meet the gear delivery deadline of the 1st. I'll contact Leo shortly to get his priorities and we'll take it from there. If there's no more donations forthcoming (disappointing) then I'll top the fund up to a reasonable amount. Got to go back to the hospital now (140 miles away), I'll be back in the loop as soon as I can. Jer, would you kindly check what double pedal deals you can get locally please. KIS, Leo has been in touch with me directly, we are looking at the Gibraltar 6600 - http://www.long-mcquade.com/products/861/

From L&M's, with taxes, should be $299.

I'll get in touch with them to check stock, I'll call around to see if I can beat that price as well.

We will for sure need more $$ if we are to hook Leo up with cymbals. If further donations are to be made, they pretty much need to happen asap - there is a few day wait on the paypal processing. Although, if I know there is more money coming in, I can cover the difference until it is processed.

KIS, thanks for keeping up on this with your priorities at hand, I wish your family the best.

I asked Leo if he would like say 2 high end cymbals or a selection of medium stuff. He says medium is better because he doesn't have any cymbals really. He identified Sabian B8's as a contender. I've used these in the past and they're great for the money & will withstand a bit of metal thrashing. I would appreciate it if you could check around for prices on a pre packed set (you know, the usual ride, hats, 2 x crashes type deal). Let me know how much the set is & how short we are in total & I'll send the difference immediately to you via Paypal. We need to get the stuff to flexmaster in Richmond Hill by this coming Monday 31st latest so not much time. Remember to include delivery costs in your total so we're not short on funds. Perhaps the best thing to do at this stage is to get the vendors to send directly to Flexmaster unless you think otherwise. I've spoken to the Flexmaster people and they're expecting stuff to arrive and Leo's friend to pick up December 1st. Thanks again my friend, Andy.

Hi jer, things going very badly at my end. It's going to be difficult for me to get online over the next few days. Thanks for looking up the B8 pack. If we had more time I'd look for something a bit more inspirational like Mural Diril (superb) but we are where we are now. Thanks for the Pearl suggestion Mr. Choppers but I think we'll go with Leo's choice. Ok, jer, I've just transferred $300 Can to your paypal account. I'm hoping that will cover the cymbals, pedal plus some left over for delivery charges. I'd be very grateful if you could buy the stuff & get it delivered directly to Flexmaster. Please remember to ask all vendors to mark each package "appeal for Leo, attn: Melinda Donnelly". Very important so the packages are identified and placed to one side within Flexmaster. I'll be back on line before Monday to arrange contacts for Leo's friend within Flexmaster. We need to get all the stuff to Flexmaster by Monday 30th latest for Leo's friend to pick up on Dec 1st. Thanks again my friend, Andy.

Check, check and double check. I'll see if they have anything above the B8's, will pitch the cause and see if I get any love.

I'll be out for most of the day, I should return with some pics, receipts and shipping confirmation.

Jer.

Just got back from shopping, forgot to take my camera with me - but they are just boxes, not so exciting.

The Gibraltar 6600 was the older model Leo requested I not get, instead, I got the DW 7002's. ($280)

Also picked up a Sabian B8 performance pack, 14" hats, 20" ride, 14" and 16" crashes, t-shirt, tuning key and dvd). ($285)

The cymbals came with a $20 gift card that I applied to the pedals (hence 2 receipts).

Grand total of $618.45 with taxes.

The package is with a former employer of mine, who get great shipping rates, will be sent FedEx tonight to arrive tomorrow. (about $20). I've also included the receipts incase they are needed for customs, etc.

So, I'll have about $16 left over, KIS' discretion as to what to do with that?

Hope this isn't too big:

Since KIS (and jer) put in so much, anyone who still wants to help out could still put in and pay a bit back to him . I'll kick off with $20CAD. Join the KIS appeal...

Cheers EH, whatever you can manage is a great help. Anyhow, what's wrong with DW5000's? I use 'em & they work just fine for me. Thinking about it though, my needs are quite simple and I don't do 999BPM! Thanks for your support, KIS.

I agree!! There's nothing wrong with a 5000!! I've used one for YEARS (a double) NO issues!!

So what's the bad rap about?? Something I should KNOW ABOUT??

And PLUS ONE on getting him some sticks with the $16 dollar leftover!!

did i say there was something wrong with dw5000s? No, i just said i thought we could do better than a used one with the money we got. Besides, there is a problem with the foot plates snapping, although that's only if you have an iron foot.

Ok guys, I'm back from hospital for a few hours and catching up on progress. Great work jer, really great! I've just had a message from Melinda Donnelly at Flexmaster to confirm that 3 boxes have arrived as of Friday evening. I assume these to be 1x box pedals, 1 x box cymbal pack & 1 x box cymbal case from JeremyS. Superb work all round guys. I'm going to message Leo's friend now with the contact details at Flexmaster. All is good to go for pickup on Tuesday 1st. I'll keep you all posted on progress.

jer, use the $16 to offset the fee shortfall in my $300 transfer. You've already kindly donated what you can and put a lot of effort into coordinating donations & procurement. You've more than played your part.

Thanks for the update, KIS. I'll hold on to the remaining money - won't spend it on myself though, thinking maybe use it for a Christmas toy drive or something along those lines.

Don't worry about any left over funds guys. We are where we are now and our part is mostly done. I've just had confirmation from Melinda Donnelly @ Flexmaster that Leo's friend has collected the stuff. I'm just awaiting confirmation from Leo's friend that everything is OK. As soon as I have further news, I'll post again. I have to go back to be with my mother in hospital for the next two days so don't worry if things go a bit quiet for a while. I'll check messages tomorrow before I leave out.

Ok guys, I have an update. Good news & bad. Leo's friend has collected the gear from Flexmaster and everything looks fine for transporting the packaged to Cuba. The bad news is that Leo's friend has just suffered a close family death and accordingly, has postponed his journey until January. This means that Leo will have to wait a while for his stuff, but as the saying goes, good things come to he who waits!

Anyhow, we've done our bit. There's nothing more we can do other than be happy with what we've achieved. We all have struggled at some stage to get our gear together but the challenge faced by Leo is on another level. Against the odds he's shown tenacity & grit to get to the stage he's at now. Given the gear he currently has, I think he makes a superb sound. His stuff may not be your genre, but measured against any peer, he's good. All we've done is donated the items that would always be beyond his reach. This appeal was never about giving Leo a whole new top end set up, but more about giving him a platform to move up from.

Although the number of members that eventually got involved is smaller than I expected, we've turned out a great result. I'm proud to be associated with each one of you and thank you for helping to make someone's dream become a reality. The stuff you and I take almost for granted, Leo will cherish. I'm sure Leo will let us know when he gets his new gear. Fondest regards to all, KIS.

Great news update guys, Leo has just mailed me and said his gear will be landing in Cuba on the 17th of this month. It's a shame there was such a delay but he's buzzing about getting his gear. He promises to post some pictures as soon as he can. Some things in life make you feel good. For me, this is one of them. KIS.

I got a mail from Leo yesterday. He was waiting for his friend to land at the airport. I expect we'll get an update in the next day or so. Leo was going to borrow a camera so he can take some pictures and post them on this site. Leo is also in the process of refurbishing a kit he thinks was made in Poland in the 60's. He's working on the bearing edges and painting it. He seems quite fired up about it. I can't wait to see the pictures of Leo with his new gear. I'm way more excited about this than if I was getting new stuff for myself!
