I've been meaning to move up to a better drum set for some time now, and I've been focused on the Yamaha Tour Custom for several years. I looked at Guitar Center and it was about $1300 there. I found a link somewhere to the set on MusiciansFriend.com, and it was an amazing deal. It was only the shell pack (Guitar Center had the 700 series hardware included), but it was only $550. To sweeten the deal, it has free shipping and two reviews that gave it 5 stars. Deals that are too good to be true usually are, so does anyone have any advice on this? Thanks!

I have a Yamaha Stage Custom as a 2nd set. Cost all of 699 new. I swear they sound just as good as any drums I've played, DW's included. I think mine are poplar shells w/ a birch outer veneer. I get a beautiful sound from them. Just saw a MF ad that had them for 100 off, 599, which includes a snare (my least liked drum from the set). I think they are a great value, but I don't know how they relate to the Tour Customs in terms of construction. It's hard to go wrong w/ Yamahas.

It's a very good deal. Also notice that it comes with a rebated for a free double pedal.

That sounds like a good deal, but they *conveniently* side-stepped adding a description or telling you what kind of wood the kit is made from. Tour Customs could be made from anything. Chances are, the ones you saw at Guitar Center for $1300 were maple or birch, and this one is basswood or poplar or something...
The "suspended" tom is the floor tom. If I were you and was considering getting this kit, I'd look into getting some floor tom legs/brackets and making it a true floor tom...it's less hassle in setting up and tearing down, and less hardware to lug around, and ultimately ends up being more stable and easier to position.

I have some advise, if Tour Custom in the available colours is what yer looking for, get on the phone right now and hope you get one. At MF when your card clears, you got it, the phone call doesn't guarantee the sale. The new TC's are not going to be any cheaper.

This one lists maple. Looks to be the current tour customs being closed out.

Well, Guitar Center and Musicians Friend are the same company.
The difference in price is for a reason, not because M.F. is selling the same thing cheaper.
That said, it's all a bit odd, because in the 80's the Tour Custom was a very different kit. They brought the name back, but attached it to different drums. Tama has done the same thing by bringing back many of the same names they used in the 80s for new drums.

the Tour Custom's are 100% maple with 60* bearing edges, they're a great drum kit, i'm looking seriously at moving up to these in the new year, very warm, thumpy sounding drums - i believe the bearing edge's affect the sound a fair bit...
it's a good deal if that's the kit yer after, good luck!
