Hi,

I am thinking on changing my Traveler snare kit, I was wondering if there is any snare in that price point (300$ max) that will sound much better then the one that come with the Pearl pack..

Any ideas ?

The Pearl Sensitone Elite in either brass or aluminum comes in at about 300 USD last time I checked

Just paid $289 for a 5 x 14 Gretsch Fullrange maple in a gloss natural finish. Similar to the Renown snare with a 10 ply (Keller I believe) shell that is thinner than the New Classics. Same lugs, strainer, hoops and stock Evans G1 heads (although the Fullrange came with a hazy reso and I think the Renown just has some cheaper unlabeled thing). But I played a couple of Renowns that were in the store at the same time, along with two New Classics that they had. The New Classics were fatter and rounder (also 6.5" deep) while the Fullrange had that funk/church sound I was looking for. Insanely sensitive to ghost notes although they are at a much higher pitch. If you really whacked the New Classic, it would give a high sharp rimshot and then have a deep, wet ghost note.

Walk into any drum shop with $300 in your pocket. Almost a guarantee, you'll walk out with a good/great sounding snare under your arm.

Had a play around on one of these the other day. Very impressed. Really, really liked it!!

Some lovely tones from this drum. If you're checking out wood shell snares, this is worth adding to your list of things to try.

Love your prices in the States too......retails at around $600 Aussie out here. If I actually needed another snare, I'd be all over it. Wish I could pick one up for $300!!

the Gretch or the MApex?
The problem is that I ask someone that is now traveling the US to buy it for me, I really need something "that I can't go wrong " :)
I heard the mapex black panther in the mapex site, and it sound really good, where can I hear the Gretch ? (is it better or same then the Black panther Cherry ?)

Great snare I agree, but they're made of aluminium. The OP is looking for wooden shells.

I say.......try the Gretsch AND the Mapex AND a Pearl Maple Free Floater AND a Yamaha AND a............well, you get my point.

If it were me, I'd get out there and try everything I could get my hands on. One will surely jump out at you. When it does, contact your friends in the States and get them to pick one up. But a snare is the drum you're gonna play the most, YOU have to be happy with the way it sounds and the best way to know this is to try them out for YOURSELF.

Save your money, then. If you, personally, aren't going to hear the snare, don't send someone else to do it. I, personally, wouldn't own either the Gretsch or the Mapex. Plenty of "other" snares I'd rather have, for $300. Do it yourself or don't do it at all. I just saw a Yamaha Musashi 13x6.5 sell on eBay for $152. That's the next snare I'm gonna add to my collection, probably. And they come in way under $300.

Cool. Interesting that the 6.5 they have there sounds pretty much like my 5". Maybe a touch ringier.

Have you considered used snares? eBay, perhaps? You could widen your options by a LOT. I got my DW/Craviotto snare for $250 and my Slingerland Hollywood Ace for $100.

Yes I considered that as well, the only problem is that I am not so familiar with good snare brand names. other then the real famous one like :

Ludwig black beauty
Mapex Black panther.
and pearl with their different celeb drums series.

Yes! It is a 13x6.5 that when tuned in the upper ranges has a nice high pop and the deep shell gives it nice body. I will probably add one of these to my collection at some point.

A 14 inch drum is probably more conventional and the most common depths are 5 to 6.5 inches. My picks on the used market would be:

DW collectors series

Yamaha maple custom absolute

Tama starclassic maple

Ludwig classic maple

Pearl free floater

George Way/Dunnet advance

If you are really a heavy hitter, stay with at least a 10 ply thickness so it won't distort when you smack it.

I would go for the original 14x5,5 of x6,5 Maple Custom. Much better than the absolutes or nouveau's.

Well I am more interested in 13" drum, and again I am looking for the kind of drums that are consensus, for example:

1 black panther series
2 Pearl sig series
3 black beauty ( no money for that one.. :) )
etc..

it is not that I ignore the possibility of a great unknown drum, it's just that I don't have so much time to go and look for the perfect snare for months.
Thanks!

Yes the original maple custom has a thicker shell and is a great snare. The absolute nouveau is a thinner 6 ply and is probably not the best choice for heavy hitters. I know Peter Erskine and Antonio Sanchez made beautiful sounds with the absolute nouveau's, which may or may not be what the poster is looking for.

Well after little discussion with friends in the biz, they told me that if you want to go to the 13" category you have to pay attention to the depth of the drum, they recommended on more then 5.5, from the recommended drums you guys told me, which one is in this category ??

Well depends on the snare.

On my former Beni 13x5,5 with extra thick shell. It was just perfect sounding:

But with my former 13x6,5 anniversary brass snare I needed that depth for shure.
