I just saw him do a clinic. I was definitely impressed. Not to mention he's a very funny guy.
He had a lot of great things to say about how to setup a practice routine. It wasn't just a guy getting up there and blowing all kinds of chops and then saying goodnight. Very informative.

He's great. He's definitely going to be one of my favourite drummers.
I hope to see him someday in italy.

Just saw his clinic last night. Not been to a huge number of clinics, but this one was the best I've seen. Of course his drumming is exceptional, but his comments about practicing and time management were very useful and extremely insightful. That, and he's really got an awesome sense of humor.
If anyone gets a chance to see him, don't miss the opportunity.

He used his only off day to make up the Seattle clinic. Yesterday morning, he flew in from Pennsylvania and this morning flew out to Florida! That's some dedication there!
He was really funny and was mock apologetic saying that Germans hate to be late and have their schedules disrupted. Everyone was at least as impressed with his friendly and genuine personality as they were his jaw-dropping drumming.
I think you're in for a real treat!

Just got home from a Benny Greb clinic here in Seminole Florida and I must say he gave the best showing I have seen to date. He was playing a Sonor Delite drum set, and Meinl cymbals and he sounded great. He played a few songs, played a few solos, and answered all questions to the fullest. He has a great sense of humor and was very good at explaining what he was doing even stopping at times to mock his use of English since he is from Germany. Watching his hands closely was amazing as his fingers would leave the stick and return at such a rate that at times it looked as if he had no contact with the stick at all. Very interesting. His main message in his talk was to emphasize HOW you play and not so much WHAT you play. TIMING is very important but is meaningless without GROOVE. The clinic was about 2 hours long and very worthwhile. If you get a chance to see any of the pros, go see them.
Didn't see this thread when I started another. Posted this Sunday.
During one of his solos he was playing with his hands and scratching his fingernails on the coated snare head, pushing the floor tom against the other floor tom, to click the rims, pushing the snare up against the rack tom to click the rims. Pretty good sound mic'ed. Then he turned his snare over and was playing the resonant side, and scraping the snares with a stick like a cheese grater. Great sounds and a lot of imagination. Of course all of these sounds were in rhythm.

Excellent post GD. Even though I wasn't there I enjoyed your flavor of explanation.
You should think about being a writer you know!

Agree with Chip and I'm a bit jealous. From what I've seen of Benny's clips, he's a phenomenal player. TIMING and GROOVE ... he has it in spades.

Awesome drummer, very nice person to meet!
I was lucky enough to meet him and help set up his kit a few years back when I was backlining for a local drum festival. He would walk up to everybody who was working or performing to shake their hand and say a warm "Hi I'm Benny". He made us laugh fooling around with the other drums kits (he had fun with Franky Costanza's double bass kit) during the sound check and later on put on an great entertaining and educational show.
I was really surprised to meet him because I didn't know he would be coming. The truck arrived at the venue to deliver all the kits we had to set up, and while we were unboxing them I was wondering who would be on Sonor that night. Ten minutes later he arrives out of nowhere saying hello and shaking hands with everybody... My jaw dropped! It was funny and very pleasing surprise. After the show I was thanking over and over again my drum teacher for getting me the job.
Here are some of the pictures I manged to take (sorry for the bad quality - I was supposed to be setting up drum up kits not taking pictures hehe!)

Here's a 10-minute interview I did with Benny Greb on Monday, May 24th, just after his clinic in Nashville, TN. This is the day after the Modern Drummer Festival and the day before he flies back to Germany.

I have never heard that kind of sound coming with what looked like such little effort.

My question last night was, with the talent that this guy has, why is he not a house hold name? What I was told was that for those that "get it", he is.
I think I am getting it.

The cymbal is a little bit on the gongy side. I should have had Benny sign it and turn it into a clock.
It was good to meet you.

I guess it's just because he's too young! All the big names have been around for ages. Though, he has everything he needs to become one of the greats!
