i have done a search on the forum, as well as on amazon, google, ect. and simply can not find a decent book on reading drum notation! I have zero knowledge of reading so im looking for something very basic that does a thorough job explaining everything! Can anyone make a suggestion? or perhaps lead me to a thread where this has already been discussed. thanks!

Drumhead Magazine, which I subscribe to, has a complete chart every month on notation etc. Evey issue also has a play along CD with the parts in the back of the issue. I would suggest picking up a copy and checking it out.

try googling different thinks like-reading drum music, score, sheet music etc. Here is a link I found using drum score..http://www.drummingweb.com/reading.htm
i might not have good timing or be a great drummer, but I am good at reading. The hardest bit is the bti that is used in all music--note values and rest values. Once you get to be able to easily see if its quarter notes, eighths or sixteenth without having to thing to hard then you are laughing so to get to grips with this note value section of any music theory book is good. Once you can do this it is quite easy to learn which line is the snare, bass tom etc.
Do stick with it. If you are interested in playing covers there are some great books showing how the drum parts are played and they are so much more accurate than the tab you get on the internet.

Trust me on this one - Garwood Whaley has two books which are excellent for reading. If you are not working with a teacher, the accompanying CDs will be extremely valuable.

Studying with a teacher will help. And I swear by this book.

gbftats,
As you may know, I have an upcoming DVD in the mastering stages called "Learn to Read Rhtyhms, Better!" This has never been done before. It's a reading book that comes with a teacher...
It starts FROM THE BEGINNING and covers EVERY rhythmic value, including all 16th combos, syncopation, triplets, odd meters, and basic chart reading....It will come with a 100 page printable EBOOK, as well as mp3's of all the examples.
The video clips are iPod formatted individually as well, and each clip has the option of repeating, or moving ahead.
Here's something for you from the begininng section. if you'd like, you may preorder it at
www.learntoreadrhythms.com
Many of you who have preordered have been extremely patient, and I appreciate it, as I think you will find worth the wait!
Enjoy!
