I'm just testing the waters here but how much would you pay for a Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz Kit in a white marine finish with cases included. The only "damage" to the kit is the normal marks on the bass drum hoop from the pedal.
I'd offer $450. It's probably almost rock bottom. He'll probably counter $600 because of the cases and then "boom" for $525 you're out the door with a kit that new is now $600 and with the cases is a good deal. Four cases is $120 to $150, so it's like you get the shells for $400.
Doneros Americanos.
I have a WMP Cat Jazz and I am very happy with its sound.

The weird thing about the Catalina Jazz kits is that they are re-selling for a much higher percentage of the new cost than most other drums. Did you buy a $6000 DW kit? You *might* be able to get $2000 for it right now, if it's the buyer's dream kit. How about that Sound Percussion kit you got for Christmas last year that your parents paid $250 for? You'll be lucky if you can get $100 for it. Ludwig Classic Maples that can be bought for $1800 new are not selling for just under $800. Cat. Jazz for $600 new?...is selling for $525 used? Are you serious?
...it boggles my mind. Going by what everything ELSE is selling for (about a third of the new cost, less than half for sure), I would offer $200 for it, and pay no more than $300. Oh, and add on about half the price of the cases, too.

I have noticed that these kits are in high demand lately. So that's certainly why the price has gone up. I got mine for $450 quite a while back. I think Music is Awesome could probably offer less. It really is quite a buyer's market lately.
Also, it depends what kind of cases you get with it. If they're high quality hard cases, then $400 for the drums and $125 for the cases is not a bad deal.
MiA, if you do get the kit, let me know if you can get the snare to sound good. I've put a half a dozen head combos on it and I still can't get it to sound good to me. I'm thinking that either it's always going to be somewhat of a stinker or maybe I should have the edges redone so they're less rounded over.
Those of you that have the CatJazz, have you got any tips on making this mahogany snare sound good?

I have played on many of these kits at gigs, and I can't get a decent snare sound, myself. That's also the consensus over at cymbalholic.com where the same conversation is happening right now...

I'd go $200-250. The guy could keep the cases and the snare. I'd have no use for either. The "used" drum world around here is awash with these kits, right now. Between all the cats who bought these kits as "first drums", and are now moving up, and all the drummers who bought them as "second gig kits" who now need money, they're all for sale and no one's buying.

I found that all the factory tension rods on the snare were really difficult to turn once the tension got higher and had kind of a grindy feeling to them and they seemed to stop shorter than where they should. I replaced them all with generic Gibraltar rods (threads look the same but screwed down much easier) and found that the snare started sounding better. I was able to get a tension and keep it much easier. I am still using the Evans heads they came with, although I am looking forward to wearing those out and putting Emperors or maybe even Fibrskyns on them. Also, I have a higher end strainer on another snare of mine which made all the difference - I think I will get a new one for the Gretsch snare as well.
It is that stupid odd-numbered-lug rack tom that is giving me grief. 5? Who came up with that?
