Hey guys. I'm really looking into a Tama Starclassic Bubinga Omni-tune drum set. First off, what are your guys' thoughts on this drum set? And is it possible to access and tune the resonant head from the resonant head side or do you have to tune it from the batter head side? Thanks!
They're great drums. Tama Starclassics are top notch and Bubingas have very nice attack and tone. Those Omnitune lugs are convenient. If it's a late model kit and has the newer style tom mounts that are more integrated into the rims (and you can afford this kit) they are the kit to have if you like Tamas.
I wish I could get one. What finish are you considering?

The SC Omni-Tune Bubingas currently have the best finish option offered by Tama: Sunny Yellow Lacquer. Awesome finish.
If only the staff at Tama would allow SC Maple or Bubinga customers to pick the Sunny Yellow finish!

I'm considering the Natural Bubinga finish. It really appeals to me!
But still...Can you access the resonant head from the resonant head side with the omni tune lugs? Or do you HAVE to tune the resonant head from the batter head side? Thanks!

That's the whole point of those drums: you tune both heads from the batter side. If you would rather go traditional and tune the resonant via the resonant, then skip the Omni-Tunes--they are not worth the extra money they'll cost if you are not going to enjoy the bells and whistles that raise the very price of the kit.
You can still get the Natural Bubinga finish in the SC Bubinga or SC Bubinga Elite, I think.

I would like the option. But I would also like to know if it is possible to access the resonant head from the resonant side...

George,
Call or e-mail the staff at Fork's Drum Closet in Tennessee. I just spoke to Matt at FDC the other day, and he mentioned that they had some Starclassics (Bubingas and B/B kits) in house. He or other staff at FDC might be able to answer that specific question for you about the resonant tuning on Omni-Tunes.
The staff at Midwest Percussion would also probably know, given their stock of Tama SC gear.
Hope that helps.

Yes,you can tune them either way. I prefer to do mine from top and bottom if I have the time. If I'm in a hurry on a gig to get rid of an overtone that I don't like, I'll do it from the top only. It's more of a guess doing it that way.

-->thegeorge<-- .. i second funk49. You can tune the resonant from the resonant side aswell as the batter side, it works by having rods with'in rods. I have the 14"x5.5" snare drum in its natural finish and its completly amazing it tunes like a dream, the bubinga wood really allows for many different tunings.Die cast and rim shots work as a great team great for loud volume situations. Although i have not try aquarian drumheads on this particular snare drum, i found that by using remo of all different sorts really brought out bubinga's true voice (not to say that evans dont sound good on it, but to my ears remo did the trick). I really dont think you'll regret going the distance with the omni-tune drums (try before you buy).
Good luck
